A MUST-HAVE!
- Pros: A 2004 game that still looks better than 2007 games. Any takers? Not only are textures nice and sharp, but Half-Life 2's eye candy also shines through in:
- Amazing life-like facial animations and lip-synch/digital acting, still beats any other game out there
- Amazing environment (political graffiti, propaganda, well-thought-out levels and maps really give you the right atmosphere at the right time)
- Amazing shaders
Half-Life 2 will run on probably any system today. Hey, it can run on my 1.2 GHz Pentium M laptop (with Intel 915 GMA and 512 RAM), so... ya. System requirements isn't a big concern you should have with HL2.
Still yet the best in-game physics around. Things float, they sink, they bobble, they fly, they flip, they fall, they shatter, you get the drift.
The game's story is incredibly immerseful. Unlike in most other FPS games, you really find yourself becoming acquaintances and close pals with the ally characters, especially Alyx Vance, your female sidekic
- Cons: Real big cliff-hanger ending.... ughhhh, what could be worse?...
Strangely enough, for a game with eye-candy graphics and real-life physics... Half-Life 2's AI is absolutely stupid. The "fearsome" enemy soldiers will stand there and shoot you in bursts. Walk up to them until you're two steps away, and they won't either bother to budge or even whack you. They'll just keep shooting at you mindlessly.
- Other Thoughts: STEAM! Even with the disc, you have to download the whole 4 GBs or something worth of game files off STEAM. Now's the time you wish you had Verizon FIOS. Took me forever! Whatever happened to the old days when you could INSTALL OFF THE DISC? Or when you can bring the game to a friend's house and play it there instead of hauling your whole computer over? Because of STEAM (which mysteriously was never mentioned on the retail box) I shouldn't hope to play this game on the plane because I won't have an internet connection. Just to play the game I need to log into STEAM. I respect STEAM's objective towards anti-piracy and I suppose it has worked well so far, but the number of customers that Valve has disappointed (whether they couldn't install the game properly or couldn't play it when they wanted to or simply because of the inconvenience) has lost them more revenue/popularity/satisfaction than if they hadn't used STEAM in the first pla
Fantastic game, worth every penny.
- Pros: I’m not sure where to start here. I still feel that this game is one of the gold standards for FPS games. I purchased it in March of this year and played it on an older graphics card, but after purchasing a newer one in August this game has really come to life. The gameplay was great all along, but with a newer video card (I spent about sixty bucks) I have all settings turned to high, and the game looks amazing.
Half life 2 has a great combination of combat, puzzles, and downtime. Just when I feel like I’m going to get sick of the current setting and blasting the same guys, the game moves to the next area. Just when I start to get tired of long combat sequences, there’s a break to do some driving or exploring.
The game sticks to the same ideas as the original with regards to weapons. There aren’t many very exotic weapons, but really I don’t think I need a gun with flashy graphics that does the exact same thing as a shotgun.
Overall a lot of fun. Buy it for sure!
- Cons: Possibly Steam? I’m not sure that it’s a con, but maybe an annoyance for a first time steam user. Discussed below.
- Other Thoughts: About steam. Steam is a program that is used to validate your copy of Half Life and to manage certain games. Originally steam was just another program that ran in the background and sucked up resources. Now, it has friends lists, game stats (how long you’ve played and achievements, much like xbox live). When you validate a game, you associate it with your steam account. Once it is a part of your steam account, you can log into that account on other machines and play your games there. I’m pretty sure that it allows you to download games to that other machine and play them there if they aren’t already installed. Of course, you can only be logged into your account in one place at a time.
There is an offline mode for steam that you can turn on once you have validated your game. That makes the games playable for laptop users and other users without a dedicated internet connection.
Also, you can gift games to friends. If you buy this, and then buy Orange Box later, you can gif

After all these years..
- Pros: Still a very fun game. One of the greatest FPS games ever. How can you go wrong with a gravity gun?
- Cons: none
Disappointed and frustrated
- Pros: None.
- Cons: Requires you to disable your firewall and anti-virus (but only while connected to the internet?)! One time it claimed that it would take 2 days to download (I am trying to install from disc). Mostly, it seems to lock up (although I have seen Steam Servers too busy sometimes). I have spent more time trying to get this to work than it probably takes to play it.
- Other Thoughts: If you see "internet connection required", keep your wallet in your pocket. Or, keep your fingers crossed!
Still disappointed
- Pros: Still can't think of any.
- Cons: Contacted Valve (or is it Steam?). Response was to kill the process or edit the registry. They need to hire somebody who can read (maybe their strategy it to wear customers down until they just accept their fate).
- Other Thoughts: Manufacturers are crying that they are losing business due to piracy. I claim they are losing business due to piracy prevention. Guess how many more Valve/Steam games I am going to buy. Guess how many I will pay full retail for.
