- Pros: If you're new to the Half Life 2 series, this is a great deal.
Valve's polish really shows. The Source engine looks beautiful with its latest updates and is very efficient. I can crank every setting to the max, including 16xQ CSAA and 16x AF and still get close to triple-digit frame rates @ 1680x1050.
It's about time that we are seeing boxed games *default* to DVDs, I hate needing 5+ CD's to install each game.
The Steam app is actually pretty useful. You can install any games you have purchased on any computer w/o needing the media or product keys.
- Cons: If you already own HL2 and Episode 1, this really is just the $xx Episode 2 bundled with the $20 Team Fortress 2. Portal is too short to market as a full game and since I suck too much to play online multiplayer, I really just paid $xx for Ep2 and Portal, which is standard retail price.
Steam, as useful as it is, does not need start at boot. Why is that every software vendor assumes that their application needs to start at boot and run in the background continuously? (Yes I know you can disable this, just making a point).
- Other Thoughts: The "gifting" of HL2 and Episode 1 is a cool concept and a great marketing technique. It's nice to see companies like Valve that make quality and innovation their top priorities.
Do you need a review!?
- Pros: Must have game for anyone that breathes air. I'm an HL fan from it's birth, but love the TFC/TF2/CS more than HL itself over the years. But you know that too obviously...who doesn't!?
I game it, I talk about it to non-gamers, and I hook them within minutes of them playing. I think this was my 3rd copy, and this isn't even for me...I had to push it on yet another victim that's loving all of it.
Really, do you need a review? I think every game included in this won game of the year by any reviewer worth their salt. Even just getting a steam account to play a Peggle Demo would be worth buying Orange Box.
- Cons: More addictive than WOW. You can get a divorce over this entire series. If there were stats on the Orange Box and not it's individual games included, I think it'd be very close...and that can't be good!
I messed up playing HL/TFC on all important days, and continue to screw up and play all the Orange Box games still today. You can't miss party hat nights! Really...get your counterpart a copy if you want to live happily ever after. Just don't own 'em too much on day one or you're on the couch.
- Other Thoughts: It's not graphically intensive. I think even dated computers can play it. I know a passive 7600GS can even. Run through HL2 and it's episodes, but do NOT pass up TF2 or portal. Those are what keep you playing, and playing, and playing.
Steam is questionable. You gotta be online to even start Steam games such as this. If steam is "busy", you gotta fix that. I don't like it all the time, but it's a change in the way we game I guess. If you're on dial-up still (think rural), you may not like these side-effects. You just can't fire up a game all the time unless you're online.
And take note of "game content changes when online". I feel they're all kid friendly (or can be set to it in options), but online...not so much. Children may not like some of the sprays we put up, but children should be supervised just being on a computer. I just get some dumb comments on servers and figured I'd point that out to mom and dad wanting to buy this for an adolescent and not take part.

Amazing collection
- Pros: HL2: Exciting gameplay, Gravity Gun is really versatile, has decent graphics
TF2: Infinite replay value, excellent visual style, what more can I say? Portal: Great storyline, revolutionary gameplay, puzzles are progressively harder
- Cons: HL2: Can get repetitive at times. Puzzles aren't as challenging as those in Portal.
TF2: I've experienced occasional crashes. The servers claim to be not responding when in reality they seem to just be full. Portal: Short storyline. The challenge puzzles are so hard they can be annoying.
- Other Thoughts: I haven't played the episodes yet (I want to finish HL2 first).
All of these games are played through Steam. I've mostly found it to be a good organizational tool, though it is slightly unstable. You have to have an internet connection to run these games.
HL2 and TF2 have a lot of gore, which may bother some users, but there are instructions online for disabling it (at least partially). Portal is a great game for kids.
AMAZING
- Pros: This is a GREAT DEAL! Not only are you getting 3 (arguably more with half life, half life episode 1, and half life episode 2) games, you are getting 3 AMAZING games, each with ratings at or above 9/10! A must buy.
- Cons: Slow installation time, about a half hour with a blazing fast custom built core i7 computer that is new, but worth it!
- Other Thoughts: A MUST BUY! I recommend this to everyone.
Half Life 2 - Fantastic Game!
- Pros: Half Life 2 rocks! Until recently, I hadn't played Half Life 2 for a couple of years. However, after building a new computer, (all parts from NewEgg.com), and installing Left 4 Dead, (Steam powered) my old Half Life 2 game showed up on the My Games page of my Steam interface. I downloaded it to my new PC and have spent over 20 hours playing it the past week!
This is a thinking man's game! Sure, there are lots of enemy soldiers and creepy creatures to blast your way past, but you also get to do a lot of problem solving in this game. Can't make your way to the next section of the game? Think, man, think! Maybe you need to blow something up, turn the water on, turn the gas off, swim underwater or retrace your steps. Also, some really cool weapons like the anti-gravity gun and the laser-guided RPG.
Valve did a great job with Half Life 2. It has very smooth game play, an excellent storyline, an incredible physics engine, and provides an incredible number of hours of entertainment!
- Cons: None.
- Other Thoughts: I see others complaining about Steam and its required online connection. That could be a pain if you have a poor internet connection, but Steam actually worked out well for me. I just built a new PC and didn't have all my Steam powered game CDs available. I just connected to Steam and downloaded them! No CDs required!
