Actually, the motherboard has built-in Gigabit (VIA Velocity), but for my purposes (Linux server) the Intel PCI adapter provides faster performance. When I had one fail I purchased this so I could get back up and running and it did more than that. I noticed that my download speeds are generally more stable (and slightly faster).
