4 out of 5 eggsSimple, Small, Does the job

Pros: Has served me well for about two years, using the 250 GB drive I installed, as backup and transport. It just runs and runs...

Cons: The fan became noisy after about one year, so I got a new one that was well rated. It seems to me that I had to solder the wires because It did not have the correct connector. No big deal, and pretty typical of my experience with these small fans.

Other Thoughts: Does the job and very easy to setup!

4 out of 5 eggsHawking HNAS1 is AOK Even With Vista

Pros: Solid case. Cheap. Function in that it does what it was designed to do.

Cons: Noisy as a Concorde supersonic transport crashing into a fireworks factory. 250GB HDD limit. Hot, hot, hot! Uses EXT3 file format. Slow. No recent firmware updates.

Other Thoughts: For Vista systems you can do one of two things to expedite setup. Since there is currently no Firmware update for the HAWKING HNAS1 to supports Samba 3.0.22 for NTLMv2 authentication (Vista default) you can run “Secpol.msc” to configure NTLM / LM authentication. However, not all versions of Vista have the “Secpol.msc” front end to the registry so alternatively you can navigate to:

“HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/LSA” in the registry and change value “LmCompatibilityLevel“ from its default of “3“ to “1“.

To allow NTLMv2, NTLM and LM authentication. It only takes a few moments to do and its really easy. When your done your Vista system will work fine with the Hawking HNAS1.

1 out of 5 eggsReturned Mine

Pros: Nice solid case slides open easily to access drive.

Cons: Didn't recognize the drive at first, then later did so with no changes on my part. Required frequent resets. Power switch sometimes failed to turn unit off. After running for about a week again failed to recognize drive. Sloppy Web interface with lots of spelling mistakes. Clumsy installation proceedure.

Other Thoughts: I did contact Hawking Technical support by e-mail and they responded within 24 hours. Newegg processed my return quickly and efficiently.

1 out of 5 eggsDied in two months

Pros: cheap. worked for 5 weeks.

Cons: In the 6th week started freezing and needing reboots with increasing frequency. In the 8th week it died. The web control panel has bugs (even with most recent firmware). Bad thermal design makes unit (including HDD) get hot. No spin-down or standby means they stay hot. I wonder how much longer the HDD would have lived if the unit didn't die first.

Other Thoughts: I should have listened to the (bad) reviews by people who owned the unit more than one month. I should also have learned from buying another hawking product a few years ago: A DSL modem and router that worked for about one week before beginning to lose settings and dropping connection, eventually dying. If you value quality and reliability, stay away from this product.

2 out of 5 eggsafter some struggling it finally works with vista

Pros: inexpensive, small, solid.

Cons: Too solid, not enough cushion to protect hard drives, only 250gb, no power saving, NOISY! not compatible with Vista OTB.

Other Thoughts: to map this drive in vista first you have to follow the instructions provided here by another reviewer (secpol.msc, etc.)

If you are not able to just click click to set it up because it shows the RPC error then you have to type in the drive manually as so:

and voila! it works.

5 out of 5 eggsGood storage unit

Pros: I use this on my network which has a Windows 2003 R2 64 bit server, 2 Vista Business systems, and a windows XP Pro SP2 system. and this unit works great, it could be a bit faster. Part of the speed issue is the hard drive I am using only has an 8 Meg cache at 7200 RPM.

Cons: Vista took about 10 Min to set up, did have to reset network security before maping the drive, I also unpluged my DSL line to my router, took 2 try's to reset the IP to a static address on the router with the use of the CD

Other Thoughts: Hawking tech support was helpfull with the correct network setting.. I was very specific with my system discreption befor I started, this way I got additional direction with only a very short e-mail.
I think some of the problems people have id due to the way the manual is writen, and there interpataion of the content.

3 out of 5 eggsGood, could be much better

Pros: Small size, functional, easy to setup(installing the drive)

Cons: No DHCP, slower than some NAS's, over-simplified and quite limited web interface.

Other Thoughts: I have tested and it works fine with Windows XP, Vista Home, and OS X. It is far from plug-and-play, but if you read around, there are guides on how to configure it. Now, this is my first NAS so I can't compare setting it up to anything else, but you do need a fair amount of know-how to really get this thing running. However, once it's configured correctly, it seems to work just fine.

4 out of 5 eggsHawking NAS

Pros: Mechanically simple. Easy to use web interface. A truly great value; bought this unit for under $50 and a 160GB drive for under $50 = NAS for < $100.

Cons: It wants to be but this isn't too difficult to change.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible documentation and support

Pros: Cheap compared to similar devices, but then it seems that "you get what you pay for" in this instance.

Cons: I'm an average power-user but I could not get this to work with Vista and had to repeatedly try the configuration on an XP box to get this to work. My first call and email to customer service were ignored. When I called a 2nd time I spoke to someone overseas who bumped me up to "Level II" support, but I was sent to a voice box and my message was not returned. By spending a lot of time on this I think it now will work, but I would never again buy anything from Hawking.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this unless you're an expert on NAS devices...or you want to learn through frustration.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap, use your own spare drive, FTP

Cons: Noisy.

Other Thoughts: For Windows Vista:
Run secpol.msc
Under Local Policies > Security Options

1.Change the value of "Network security: Do not store LAN Manager hash value on next password change" to "Disabled"

2.Change the value of "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" from "Send NTVLM2 responses only" to
"Send LM and NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated"

For Windows XP

Create a batch file: MapServer.bat with contain:
net use z: \\I-Drive\share /user:username password
and run in the start up folder
