4 out of 5 eggsWPA works

Pros: I have 3 of these devices and while the documentation could be a little better, WPA does work in bridge mode contrary to another reviewer. "Ethernet Client" is the correct mode to choose for bridge, not repeater, and WPA works.

Cons: The documentation could be better but once it's set up it keeps working with no fuss.

2 out of 5 eggsmisleading and confusing

Pros: Price.

Cons: the interface is confusing and it does NOT support WPA in Bridge mode.

Other Thoughts: I bought this because I wanted a low cost wireless Ethernet Bridge. Which this is. However, in the interface you must select "Repeater" to use this as a Ethernet Bridge, not "Ethernet Client" as instructed in the manual. Very poorly written interface. Also, The manufacturer claims it supports WEP as well as WPA in all modes regardless. But once you select Repeater for the bridge set up the WPA feature disappears. Sorry but WEP just doesn't cut it anymore. Maybe I am being too demanding but I wanted the item described, not the item I received. There are 2 versions, and no firmware update for the one I got. This is going back.

5 out of 5 eggsSMC rocks

Pros: No nonsense Atheros chip-set. Web -administration is easy and most importantly independent of the Operating System you are running. I have couple of FreeBSD run clients behind this wireless access points. Sometimes, I continuously recompile applications using ports for more than 3-4 days. This thing never drops the signal which is must for me. Great business grade product. Supports WAP/WAP@ and WIP

Cons: I noticed that it runs little bit hot but it should not be problem with adequate ventilation.

Other Thoughts: I have own various SMC product for the past six years. I bought this one as a replacement for my 5 years old SMC 2870W access point (used at my home) which was physically destroyed by my daughter. I had such a great experience with SMC that choosing this product was no-brainer.

I noticed that few people are complaining that this thing used as receiver (atheros really ROCKS on BSD for that matter) doesn't support DHCP.
That is irrelevant for serious networking.

3 out of 5 eggsalmost good enough

Pros: good range

Cons: no dhcp, hot enough to be a bbq, not easy for a novice

Other Thoughts: I only tested this as a wireless client, the idea being it could be used on Mac and Linux systems unlike USB wireless clients which need opsys specific drivers. However, it cannot get an IP address from the WAP via DHCP. So everything has to be hand configured. Which is hard for the novice user. It is also not a good idea in any network as there is the potential for address collision. Takes me back 20 years when I had to make sure everyone on the LAN had a unique address. SMC knew they had to do DHCP as it is mentioned in the manual and the web configuration pages. Guess they couldn't figure how to make it work.

4 out of 5 eggsA great client for Atheros-based routers

Pros: Extremely stable connections when connecting to an Atheros-chipset router, because the bridge also uses an Atheros chipset. I put a Tivo behind one of these, it runs for 2-3 months without problem (with WPA2-PSK encryption enabled).

Cons: Runs VERY hot - be sure to give it adequate ventilation (don't stack something on top of it). Web configuration interface isn't the greatest, but the latest firmware took care of some complaints.

Other Thoughts: Kind of an expensive way to get a client connected with Atheros PCI cards running under $30, but if you've got an ethernet-only device and an Atheros-based router, this is a very solid solution.

4 out of 5 eggsIf you want WPA, it will not bridge

Pros: It is small, fast, capable, and has quite good tech support (from overseas).

Cons: Contrary to the spec sheet, as a wireless bridge (which they call a repeater), it will only do WEP encryption. Since the Germans just figured out how to break WEP in under a minute, this is a severe security problem. I had hoped it would do WPA2 which I use in the rest of my LAN. Because my LAN is behind my firewall and is trusted, it is a big problem to use WEP and leave yourself vulnerable this way.

Other Thoughts: But, I was able to use the SMC as a wireless Ethernet Client. This lets ONE device hardwire into the SMC. The device can get out to the Internet, but I am unable to get to the SMC or the device from my LAN. This may kill its use which was to attach my Slingbox to my LAN.

4 out of 5 eggsI just can't win

Pros: I'm coming from a Linksys bridge that was constantly dropping and losing connection. So far its been running ok and has great signal strength.

Cons: Web admin is very sloppy, they use non-standard terminology that make setting the device up confusing (i.e. SuperG vs just saying connection speed), blue leds are a little too bright, and it does run pretty hot.

I'm also having a problem with getting my linux box to work with this device. It can't communicate past the bridge regardless of whether I try doing DHCP requests or manually enter the settings. I'm using Fedora 6, probably going to go back to Slackware and I will see if it works there.

Other Thoughts: I came from a Linksys that was having massive problems with keeping a connection. Started with WPA problems which are common with the version I have and then it escalated to the point where it wouldn't even stay connected for more than 10 minutes at 11Mbps with no encryption at all. It also had bad signal quality. All this started to happen when I couldn't return it too... really annoying.

This SMC device is good so far, I will post a review for this if it dies like my Linksys did.

5 out of 5 eggsUtterly perfect

Pros: Ease of setup, configurability, stability, security, price.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This replaced my Linksys and I'm glad I did. I don't think I'll be buying another Linksys product again. If you need a great b/g wireless router, this is the one you want to pick up.

5 out of 5 eggsSimple and works

Pros: Simple to set up, stable, worked right away plus extra features after firmware update. 108Mbps speed.

Cons: Gets very hot after a while, and did reboot by itself, probably from getting too hot. Takes a long time to reconnect between networks, too many steps involved in the process. No built in DHCP server.

Other Thoughts: I got it for using it in stationary directional network bridge over the distance of 5-6 miles. The external connector is connected to secondary antenna, and does not get full power from the radio. But internal antenna is primary and gets full power from the radio. So i had to cut off the internal antenna and connect 15db directional antenna to the primary antenna pcb trace. Works great now, even better with 3watt amp in line. Have not tried 108Mbps speed yet, but its a big plus. I will be taking the radio out of its original plastic box and putting it in the weatherproof die-cast aluminum case and will thermally connect it to the case to keep it from melting itself..

5 out of 5 eggsA little effort

Pros: It works well.

Cons: It took a bit of time and effort to get it to start communicating. Not the easiest Wireless component with which I have worked to install.
