5 out of 5 eggsFantastic notebook! When it runs XP!

Pros: This notebook is perfectly made for an average or hardcore consumer who wants high value for a good price. I tend to put many of my machines under high abuse with the things I put on them and all the playing around I do. This one has held out underneath all that. However I don't condone buying one with Vista on it, or just buy this one and then put XP on it and eradicate every last kb of Vista on the laptop. But you don't have to if Vista is your preference. This is the best thing ever.

Cons: One time the C-key fell out. I had that fixed. Not a big deal. Probably not a common thing at all.

2 out of 5 eggsNot a Fan

Pros: the only pros to this machine is that it should be a very powerful gaming machine but it's not.

Cons: There is a bad stuttering problem when you run 3D graphics accelerated programs. During games you get a framerate drop every 3-5 seconds. It may go from 80fps down to 15fps then back up, causing a jerky feel to the graphics. Almost like lag. This also happens when watching movies in Media Center. This is not just a problem with my laptop there is a 29 page thread on NVIDIA's forums. Web address is http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=30162

Other Thoughts: A total waste of money since Toshiba cant seem to get a working BIOS or graphics card driver.

4 out of 5 eggsMy First Toshiba

Pros: Good lookin', nice keyboard, fast CPU, fast (I hope so..) GeForce, nice display, good memory, nice fingerprint device,

Cons: HDD should be faster, no VISTA drivers for the graphic card - poor gaming and even DVD performance!

Other Thoughts: I'm going to downgrade to Win XP to see The Ultimate Gaming Machine..

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Outstanding machine, bought it for my son's high school graduation present; he loves it. Great graphics, lots of features for graphic arts.

Cons: As mentioned before, the HD and the battery life; but both are minor for a machine like this. Still have Vista compatability problems (Not really a problem specific to this machine) but I'd like to get a set of XP recovery disks for this machine.

Other Thoughts: Toshiba has a new model out with a faster HD and higher screen resolution; but its almost twice as expensive. For the cost and features, this is the best deal available. Newegg service was outstanding as usual; fast delivery. Newegg rocks!

5 out of 5 eggsWow...

Pros: I can't say enough about this machine. I mainly use this for programming, web usage and a little game play, until recently when I installed HL2 - it amazed me how well it performed. Between the processor(s) and memory, Visual Studio 2005 takes about 1 second to start up compared to my 15+ second install on my work computer. Fingerprint reader and keypad are very nice as well.

The only slow down I've noticed was due to 20GB file transfer while music is playing, VS open, several browser windows and an SD card Copying 2GB of pictures to the HD as well. After all of that, it was still decently usable.

There are also 2 video ports on the back allowing for up to 3 screens with Vista, very nice.

Cons: 4200RPM Hard Drive. While lightly noticeable, I'll probably upgrade to Solid State at the end of Summer.

Battery Life. The standard 6 Cell battery is lacking, pulling less than 2 hours in power saver with Wifi disabled. I'll be paying to upgrade to the 9 Cell soon.

I wish there was a Dock option other than USB Based. C'mon Toshiba, some of us Game and Work on the same laptop...

On the Toshiba board, there are numerous comments about the power block shorting out pretty quickly with no free replacement.

Other Thoughts: Anyone thinking of upgrading memory to 4GB will only get about 3.1GB out of it. Was hoping for at least 3.5, but oh well. Memory is also a very tight fit if it has heat spreaders. Vista Score out of the box is 4.3, but thats due to the HD. Next lowest score is Memory Ops Per Sec at 4.5. Vista Aero Graphics: 5.4

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very nice and very capable notebook. All the bells and whistles you want in a notebook, and priced at less than $2000. This notebook looks great, has adequate cooling, and sports a full 10-key number pad. Sound is excellent for a laptop. I'm very impressed overall. If the video issues are resolved, this will be a PERFECT notebook.

Cons: Problems with Vista and the graphics card. With third party drivers, I've been able to get the HL2 Lost Coast benchmark to around 90FPS average. Has problems with "stuttering" during 3d rendering, which appears to be a video driver problem. This can be solved by switching to XP (which is unsupported by this notebook, so you have to get drivers from previous notebook version, which work fine) or, I hope, waiting for nVidia to release appropriate Vista drivers.

Other Thoughts: The smaller keys don't bother me much (they're a little smaller to be able to support the 10-key). The dark blue cover almost looks black (I would have preferred black). The cover doesn't come off, as I thought it might.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat laptop

Pros: This laptop is really well built and very fast with the duo and 2gigs ram. Best laptop for money and size range. Thinking of buying another one for my brother. This is worth money yet understand vista has problems like all new os's. Xp was almost as bad when it launched.

Cons: Hard drive speed , Vista uses most of your ram for caching instead of the gaming ideology of use it when you need it. Thats solved by using a 2gig flash drive in the speedup options. Toshiba installs to much unneeded apps.

Other Thoughts: One thing to increase your vista "experiance" is to start>"cmd" >msconfig once there go to start up and click disabled all then save and restart. That will disable all unneeded apps and will only use what you need to run your comp then you can go back and enable the stuff you really want like the touch pad and the fingerprint reader.

3 out of 5 eggsCall it what you want

Pros: Nice video card for laptop, 17' screen, Core 2, 2GB of RAM, Number pad.

Cons: Battery life is low even when not playing games. Toshiba has not released XP drivers for this model. Vista makes even older games lag. 4200 RPM HD (at least its easy to replace).

Other Thoughts: According to the "Product Review Guidelines" I'm not allowed to Criticize UPS, so I'll just list the facts. I ordered everything on the weekend and it shipped Monday with 3 day delivery, Thursday it was being listed on the UPS website as arrival scan, in Lenexa, KS which is about 200 miles from me. It was never listed as in transit, but I continued to check because I didn't want a $2000 laptop hanging around on my front porch alone. Oddly my old laptop chose that moment to give up the ghost, so I went home from work. I check again at 4:30 pm and it was listed as delivered to front porch at 4:17 pm, I checked it wasn't there, I then checked with my neighbors, nope. I'm flipping out, no departure scan from KS, no arrival scan in my town, no out for delivery, just delivered to porch I was home nobody came. So I am trying to contact Newegg at about 4:45 pm when I hear the UPS truck, his battery was dieing so he scanned everything as delivered, even though it wasn't.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: This thing has a number keypad! Also there's a lot of bang for your buck as far as consumer laptops go. I have not had any trouble out of my laptop. I actually purchased mine it in Nov. 06. It came with XP Professional and I recently received a free upgrade to Vista Business and it works great with no problems.

Cons: As others have stated, the HD speed is 4200RPM. One day I may upgrade if a faster 200GB drive is put out for a reasonable price.

Other Thoughts: Wish there was an expansion/docking port for an external battery. Wouldn't mind if the screen went one resolution size higher. I also was under the impression this Notebook would come with a remote - it doesn't.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat!

Pros: Uber fast, core 2 duo @ 2Ghz. Awesome screen, bluetooth, etc - all the bells and whistles. 2 gig 667 RAM. Light-weight considering the size. Plays the latest games well.

Cons: Price. Probably comes with Vista now (I got XP on mine, ordered in Nov 06)

Other Thoughts: Ants like it. Never ate near it but somehow it got infested with ants!
