5 out of 5 eggsSolid notebook

Pros: It's held up to more than 5 years of day to day operation, and with a 2GB memory upgrade that's been in since day 1, runs Win7 like a boss. Does just fine for the internets, movies, music, etc. Battery still gets about 1.75 hours, which is not bad.

Cons: HDD is not SATA, which precludes installing my spare SSD for further performance gains. Wireless module is recognized, but not able to be switched on in Win 7, therefore it's not functional. Not so great on the gaming anymore, but that's to be expected. Screen had to be replaced due to blunt force trauma; not the laptop's fault.

Other Thoughts: Fantastic staying power for a laptop; it has outlasted a newer Acer and a homebuilt desktop with ease.

3 out of 5 eggs...there are better choices...

Pros: Great software performance
Great networking performance
Good gaming performance
Awesome service from newegg
Fast delivery

Cons: Cheap buttons
Cheap LCD
Can't boot from USB, older BIOS
Wireless takes a long time to connect, but once it does works great. Only 64onboard video RAM, this will limit for future games. Gets kinda hot. Will need to repartition to NTFS when you get it.

Other Thoughts: At the time I bought mine, the price was good. But if your looking at one now, look again, the price is too high when you consider the other choices now available. Better LCDs and more video RAM, this unit is now dated in comparison...

4 out of 5 eggsWorth it

Pros: Cheapest computer with both AMD and dedicated graphics I could find.

I use the second partition, though reformatted it first.

Little extra software cuts costs to what the buyer actually wants.

Single 512 stick instead of 2 256s.

Stays pretty cool as long as the processor is kept under an average 40% utilisation.

Cons: Screen is scratched by the keyboard and palmrest edge quickly if you aren't careful how you carry it, but only an issue with a dark background.

FAT32 partitions.

Wireless disable button very easy to accidentaly hit.

USB ports on the left. If you use a wired mouse, only realistic port to use is in the back.

Loose mouse buttons.

Center mouse button (that I can only assume is meant for scrolling) has only been of use in Wordpad thus far.

Iffy build quality (loose panel) and limited online support resources.

Other Thoughts: Main use of this notebook is for web, productivity, and some minimal calculations (mostly MATLAB.) Performs what I need it to very easily. I also run a distributed computing program on it when its plugged in; as long as I restrict it to under 40% processor usage, there are no problems with heat. Perfect companion computer to my desktop that is now relegated to computational work and gaming. Only worry is about quality; roomate has an Aspire 3002 that is currently in for a hardrive replacement, and the panel near the screen is loose on the left side.

4 out of 5 eggsgood for the price

Pros: Cheap, light, somewhat fast, good screen (no dead pixels) everything works like its supposed to.

Cons: Bought this to replace Sony vaio that had taken one too many falls. This is not nearly as sturdy as that Sony was, so I think I will be alot more careful with this one, when it comes to falls. I worry when I open it that I will break the screen, it is very flimsy feeling, and I am a brute. Otherwise, I hate that it comes formatted as fat32, so I wiped the hd completely with dban, and reinstalled with just a WinXP Pro disk and reinstalled all drivers, but you have to have launch manager installed to get "radio" to enable on built in wifi card, kinda cheesy if you ask me.... I thought it came with bluetooth too...my mistake, I wish now that I had spent the extra money and bought the Ferrari

5 out of 5 eggsGood gamer on a budget

Pros: Great performance for the price - 64 bit AMD is a bit of future proof. Stand alone viceo card (64 MB though - will NOT run NWN2)

Cons: Gets hot, usual partiton/formatting concerns.

Other Thoughts: dyedchip, 3/19/2006 5:14:15 PM said it perfectly - I'll agree with him word for word - WoW runs great, as does Doom 3, etc. Get this lappy!

5 out of 5 eggsI wouldn't not recommend it

Pros: 1) The screen is the most notable and greatest thing about it. It is bright, crisp, and has a wide viewing range (many people can be watching it without having to sit on each others' laps).

2) The second best thing is the performance per dollar. Yes, there are better laptops out there, but not for this price. Plays games like HL2, Doom 3, and CS:source on high graphics extremely well.

3) good wireless, and bluetooth.

3) battery life lasts longer than expected if you turn down the brightness. This doesn't affect picture quality as much as I would have thought.

Cons: 1) Gets warm, but what laptop doesn't? Don't use it for more than a few hours at a time and this is no big deal.
2) Horrendous speakers, even for a laptop. Still, I use headphones, so who cares.
3) DVD Burner is obsolete. "Super Multi Double Layer" sounds really cool, but it's actually lame. Takes about 45 minutes to copy a dvd and even longer to burn one. I have a 16x burner on my desktop, and it takes less than 6 minutes to burn a 4.38gb dvd on it.
4) As everyone else has stated, it comes with poorly formatted disks. Easily fixed.

Other Thoughts: This laptop is exactly what I wanted/needed for both gaming and school (university level). Get passed the bad speakers and heat and this is a great laptop. This is made for people who have an above-average knowledge base on computers. (i.e. not for the college freshman, go buy a Dell...)

5 out of 5 eggsNice Nice Nice

Pros: Big Screen, Fast boot up, Pre-configured mostly. Excellent Price.

Cons: Runs a little warm when playing graphics intensive games. Recommend a laptop cooler.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value

Pros: Best cost:performance ratio I could find, minimal preloaded bloatware, nice sharp screen and good keyboard feel, fast and quiet hard drive, ships with one 512MB RAM stick installed so you can expand memory w/o losing any of the original.
I added Crucial 1GB RAM stick, Model #: CT12864X335, it's been flawless in this machine and matches the factory RAM stick's timings perfectly.

Cons: 2x50GB HD partition in FAT 32 format, speakers are fairly tinny sounding, fan is fairly noisy and doesn't seem to slow down once it spools up, regardless of processor utilization.
I'll rework the HD partition with partition magic at some point in order to avoid having to reformat and reinstall everything.

Other Thoughts: I'm pleased with this machine and would buy it again. The FAT 32 HD format is necessary if you want to image the C: drive to the D: partition using the installed backup/recovery utility. Acer tech support responded with an email written by a real person about two days after I submitted an inquiry via their website.

I was concerned about the display quality after reading some of the reviews on this machine but am very happy with it after using it - it beats the new HP/Compaq I use for a company laptop hands down. The Gigabit ethernet connection is fantastic but I haven't tried a wireless connection yet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: wonderful graphics (plays WoW on high great)
fast
I like that it's dual partitioned already.

Cons: the fat32 (as many other people have complained about)

Other Thoughts: After a month of researching and searching for the right "gaming" laptop, I purchased this one. So far it's running great, plays games great, and is fast. I purchased another 1 gig ram for it as many others did and it's wonderful.

5 out of 5 eggsSUPERB!!

Pros: video card plays games most laptops can't, such as UT2004 at high rez. I can watch movies, burn, do work and research and still have a gaming machine too. My desktop is collecting dust now.

Cons: low video ram (high for laptops though) boot-up is slow, but not a problem. the finish is easily scratched and scarred on the cover.

Other Thoughts: absolutly wonderful, would recommend it to anyone. Acer has made a life long client of me. Buying a second for my daughter for college.
