5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice but not without flaws

Pros: Sturdy design/nice keyboard/Price/CPU/
2gb RAM/x1600/very well designed glidepad buttons/Big Harddrive/
4-way scoll button/DVI output along with Analog./ Sata HD / Acer tools are actually useful and not "bloatware"/Hinges on LCD seem very well designed./Easily accessible compartments on the bottom so upgrades will be easy.

Cons: Weak sound with no bass/Display should be brighter/Vent on Right/Optical drive on Left/Top right gets very hot. There would be enough room for a numeric keypad if Acer had a better designed KB layout./ Sound outputs on front instead of side

Other Thoughts: Seems designed for the left handed person. I wish it had a trackpoint along with the glidepad. The 6.6 pounds is not that noticeable when comparing it to my 4 pound ThinkPad T41. People state that there are no audio controls however the arrow keys double as Sound and Brightness controls so that makes up for it in my opinion. Would be better if the power cord plugged in behind the pc and not on the side. Hd is 5400rpm and not 7200.
Time will tell if it is reliable as my ThinkPad has been.
Botton line - Would I buy it again knowing what I know - yes

5 out of 5 eggsGoodie

Pros: Core Duo T2500 - Not as good as the new Core 2 Duo T7200, but still plenty of power for 90% of users.

2GB Ram - More than enough for me and Vista combined.

X1600GPU - If you don't want the nVidia 7800/7900 GO packed into a 17 inch, 12 pound laptop, this is the one to get. Blows away the X1300/1400 and the 7300/7400Go. Bit faster than the 7600Go.

Cons: Ergonomics - The headphone jacks are in the front, so if you plan on using separate speakers, they make the laptop look pretty ugly. Also makes it difficult to use comfortably in the lap with headphones attached.

Other Thoughts: Performances:

Mathematica 5.1 CPU Score = 2.00
(And that's single threaded, mind you)
FEAR = Medium Settings/Medium Res
Battlefield 2 = Highest Settings/Highest Res
Oblivion = Medium Settings/Medium Res
___

Right Side Fan - You will notice the heat coming out the right if your mouse is withing 4-6 inches of the fan

Regarding Huracan's Review Below:

Resolution - Your resolution scaling issues are common to all widescreen displays. Unless you want black bands across your edges, you'll have to stretch the images that don't support widescreen aspect.

Driver Support - Ok, so you may not have found the 4674 on their website. That's since all drivers are sorted by series names (IE the AS5670, TM4760, TM8200). So if you look for the 4670 series, you'll find all the drivers you're looking for, except audio. Thats an easy google for 'Realtek HD Audio Codec.'

Video Drivers are found on ATi.com -> Drivers/Software -> WinXP -> Notebooks -> Catalyst -> Download. And yea,

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful Office Noteboook

Pros: Great performance for the price. Great processor. Good video card. Plenty of memory. Blows my desktop outta the water. Photoshop files process very fast. Great all-around office powerhouse.

Cons: Screen is not bright or clear enough. Color and saturation variy depending upon where you view the screen. Makes photo editing difficult when proper color is important. Even after calibrating with a Spyder 2 Pro, colors and contrast vary across the screen. But then again it isn't designed for heavy photo work.

3 out of 5 eggsRead the small print

Pros: Very good price, fast shipping fast to set up and very impressive Empowering Technology. Super for non GAMERS!

Cons: If you want to play games read the fine print first! The native resolution its 1280 x 800 very few new games use that resolution or support it so you are going to have black bars on all sides top & bottom included if you like crisp video not expanded only. Video Drivers make it a wish because Acer.com don't even have travelmate 4674 on their website listed. That's the mayor problem for video and forget about going to ati.com for normal drivers because ACER don't support the original ati drivers. And if you think you going to install the mod to install the drivers from ATI, done that and x1600 not supported. No Cover and No mouse in the box.

Other Thoughts: Act of war its really a war to try playing. And Oblivion gets the heat pumping on your mouse hand quick. (my acer came with a sticker on the bottom of the CPU fan which covers the vent, makes it better for the videocard to cool but I got rid of it).

5 out of 5 eggsWhat else could you ask for...

Pros: This is all I have to say for the price they offer...
Intel Core Duo processor (2.0 Ghz) 15.4 LCD, ATI x1600 512mb hyper memory, 120 GB hard drive 5400 rpm, GREAT cd-rom dvd-r/rw, 2GB DDR2 memory, wireless Lan preinstalled.

Cons: Doesnt come with carrying case...

Other Thoughts: For office this is great fast quite, does not get hot. For gamers I tested 3 games which were FEAR, BF2 , DOOM ran all 3 on high graphics quality, and gained and FPS of 120 or more. Must play in dark shaded places for best screen results though.

3 out of 5 eggsHot in more than one way

Pros: Good Specs, best assets are 2Ghz Core Duo & ATi x1600 graphics

Cons: Heat - too much of it on the right half, especially close to the exhaust vent which is poorly placed .

The mouse scroll control does may not work with all programs.

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop to do DJ work, so that means 5 hr at a time useage. I read the initial reviews about heat, but thought my lap-cooler would keep it in check. No such luck. The entire area to the right of the keyboard gets uncomfortabley hot. Don't plan on using an external right side mouse with this. The area to the right of the touchpad also gets pretty warm.

The problem with the scroll button surfaced when I used my DJ software. Can't scroll thru my song lists. Scrolling works ok on run of the mill windows tho. I would have much preferred the finger scroll area seen on other touchpads.

It was hard to find a machine with these specs, so make sure you can live with the heat if you buy this. You can also easily throttle the CPU speed down via Acer control to reduce some of the heat.

So if someone wants to make me an offer I'll consider selling it back. Great laptop, just doesn't suit my partcular need to a tee.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Laptop after Proper Config

Pros: Extremely fast that outpaces "gaming" laptop.

Cons: Getting this baby configured properly takes some serious knowledge of HD architecture and backup procedures.

Other Thoughts: This laptop comes with the "end-user" in mind. It has 1 4gb fat partition and 2 55gb fat32 partitions. You are only supposed to use one of the 55's. In order to get it to one 120gb, you have to reformat, install XP from CD, install ERecovery, and then re-install using burnt DVD. Lengthy process but the end result is definitely worth it.

5 out of 5 eggsFaaaast

Pros: FAST, this is one fast laptop, great specs, I love the 2 gigs of ram. I'm not limited to running only a handful of programs but instead a bucketload. The 120GB HD is great, I have about 45GB of music and I wanted to fit it all on my laptop without taking out a huge chunk of space (taking 45 gigs out of an 80 gig HD is quite a big chunk, not so much with a 120). I havent played any games on it yet but it performs great on other things such as photoshop. At first I didnt think I would like the empowerment software that is included with it but I found that it offered some pretty nice features. I love that this isnt a "bought out" laptop, that being that it doesnt come with any extra software that you dont need. The VGA and the DVI outputs are awesome, I have a 20.1" screen I can hook it up to if I ever feel the need. I actually have dual monitors on my desktop then an extra monitor not hooked up to the side so can go quad monitors if I hook it up to my laptop (Geek squad here I come)

Cons: When I ran 3dBenchm@rk06 it scored twice as high as my desktop. (it might not seem like a con at first but its kinda depressing seeing your laptop outscore your desktop). The only other con that I can think of would be the screen. I love the matte like the other guy because the glossy just gives off a false sense of "niceness" and it has wayyyyyy too much glare. However, when your not looking at the screen dead on it appears to be slightly grainy. Sure buying a sony or something would be nice, but I'm not in it for the screen, I need the performance.

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop for college and I'm going into a media related field so I wanted a laptop that I could help render videos over the network with my desktop. But after seeing the 3d06 score I might need to invest in a new desktop as well.

5 out of 5 eggsAn Overall Great Notebook

Pros: core duo, 2gb ram, mobility radeon X1600 (128mb VRAM) up to 512mb through Hyper Memory, nice to look at also. Nice ports on Notebook (4 USB, DVI, SPDIF, 5 in 1 card reader to name a few)

Cons: does not have bluetooth even though there is a switch on the front of the notebook to toggle it on or off.

Other Thoughts: Ive gone Dell for my last three notebooks and im glad i decided to break away from dell and purchase this notebook, the lcd is bright and the colors are vibrant, not a glossy lcd like on an hp or sony notebook but its so much better than the grainy low res screen on my old Latitude D800. EzDock is the only docking solution by acer and is expensive for one too.

4 out of 5 eggsV Good, but careful of specs

Pros: Fast, quiet, light, good value.

Cons: Awkward screen resolution and awkward dimensions

Other Thoughts: I upgraded from a P4 HP notebook. This one is a lot faster and quieter (sometimes i'm underwhelmed when upgrading) What I mean by Check the Specs is A) I thought I'd be ok with it but I find the 1280x800 screen res very limiting vertically. My old had 1450x1050 and i badly miss the extra 250 pixels. B) While this unit is thin and light, it's wide and deep so it's tricker to pack in my backpack. It's too bad they didn't use the extra width and depth for a fab keyboard. I got this model for the 124pin EZ Dock output. The EZ Dock is full-featured but so clumsy - almost impossible to fit on a desk. The LCD is matt which i prefer over the glossy ones. You can disable the onboard LCD and use 2 external monitors - 1 DVI and 1 VGA. My unit indicates 512MB video ram (!) - not the 128MB advertised. I wanted the 8204wlmi for the extra screen space and webcam but $500 extra is a bit steep. The onboard numlock setting synchs with external keyboard which is annoying
