5 out of 5 eggsBest Netbook Ever

Pros: I have purchased several of the 1000HE netbooks over the past couple of years. Why, they are built like tanks. 100% compatible with Linux and Ubuntu. The keyboard is firm and correctly spaced. Access to the ram and hard drive are perfect for easy upgrades.

Cons: In all fairness, the unit, if this came with a finish other than glossy, it would be perfect. The glossy finish is the only negative thing I can say.

Other Thoughts: Since this units release a couple of years ago, I have purchased 6 of these netbooks either for myself, for others, or for work purposes. Immediately upon receiving the units are upgraded with 2GB ram and 64GB SSD drives. Many I have updated the Wifi to Intel 4965AGN cards.

I recently purchased a 1201T and it is nice, but it has nowhere near the build quality of the 1000HE. These units are built like tanks and last forever. My success is mostly with Linux and Ubuntu, so I cannot comment much on the Windows side of things.

In fact I just bought the last new one on Newegg in fear that they are becoming unavailable as new.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Netbook

Pros: Boots fast, lightweight, easy to carry around. Like the built in card reader.

Cons: Takes a little time to get used to the keyboard. Nothing major. Its a little slow on opening apps. And yeah the thing is a fingerprint magnet, but I don't care if it operates properly.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for traveling and for occasionally use for work. Ive had no trouble connecting to wifi at hotels or at home. XP is ok, but Ive honestly like Vista. Surely would choose XP over Windows 7 Starter. Would like to upgrade to 2GB of memory and try Ubuntu or Windows 7 home premium.

5 out of 5 eggsStill Love This Netbook After 16 Months!

Pros: I am a PC Technician, and I use my ASUS 1000HE for hours a day, every day, and after more than a year of continual use, this little netbook still has great battery life, and has given me absolutely zero problems. I take it with me on every appointment. It is small and lightweight, but not at all flimsy and cheap like everything other netbook I have looked at. I've never had a problem with wireless connectivity, in fact get good range from the wireless NIC, plus it's got lots of extra features that other netbooks don't have, like the Tray Utility that allows you to easily change screen resolution (very important on a netbook), and easy FN key control of touchpad, chicklet style keyboard with minimal flex, and you can install the ASUS Splendid Utility (download from their site), which gives you more options for video display. In my line of work, I have checked out so many netbooks, and none compare with this one in terms of build quality and features. Trust me, this netbook rocks!

Cons: I haven't encountered any!

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for the best quality netbook with the best features by far, look no further. And now that newegg has dropped the price from $390 to $304, what are you waiting for??? You won't be disappointed in this netbook.

3 out of 5 eggsOK, but

Pros: Cute little netbook. Always been a big laptop, desktop guy. Don't want to pay for an iPad ($$$). Just as advertised. No real frills, but boots fast, screen is sharp and bright enough, keyboard works almost as well as a full size laptop -- none work as well as a real keyboard for a touch typist. Small and light to carry. Haven't tested the battery life yet. On a trip this weekend to California. It will get tested there.

Cons: As others have said, it is a fingerprint magnet. But, that's no biggy for me. A bigger problem is that it refuses to find my wifi router (netgear b/g), probably because I do not broadcast my SSID. I set up the wireless manually to automatically connect, whether it "sees" the router or not. It won't do it consistently. Once connected it's OK, but not connecting on boot up is a major pain.

Other Thoughts: Will repost after a week.

5 out of 5 eggsASUS Eee PC 1000HE

Pros: After carefully analyzing several different netbooks, I have come to the conclusion that the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE is the best bang for you buck. Several positive reviews from customers and critics persuaded me into purchasing this item.

It comes with Windows XP Service Pack 3, in my opinion my favorite OS.

9.5 Hours of Battery Life.

Removable battery.

Easy to upgrade RAM, 2GB.

Quick upload from the moment you push the power button.

And it looks very cool.

Cons: The netbook cons:

No CD/DVD drive.

Other Thoughts: ASUS Tech Support can give you the downloads to upgrade your drivers. Make sure your BIOS is up-to-date!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome netbook!

Pros: -The battery life as claimed: about 9 hours without wife on low screen backlight settings, about 7 or more hours with active WiFi usage. I usually charge it once a day at night.

-Awesome keyboard with two function keys, very easy to type on.

-Configurable CPU throttle (Super Hybrid Engine, or SHE) to boost the CPU cycles (noticable for CPU intensive tasks like playing videos).

-The touch pad has two-finger scroll, right click, tap-to-drag and zoom.

-The large battery does not stick out of the bottom

-Lightweight, small, awesome to use on an airplane or in subway, not much noticable when you put it in your bag.

Cons: None that I could think of.

Other Thoughts: My screen started to show dead pixels several months after purchase, and eventually many vertical lines blew out completely. Mailed it in to Asus center for RMA repair, got it back within a week or so with a new screen. No problems (knock knock) since.

Meanwhile, my main laptop screen died, and I started to use this netbook for all computing: LaTeX, programming (Processing, VS, Eclipse), music making (Energy XT), photo editing (GIMP + Bibble Pro 4 + Hugin), minor 3DsMax usage, light gaming (Civ III). It is awesome to have it everywhere and be able to do all these things on a machine of this convenient size.

I swear by this machine and would recommend it highly, especially since the price has dropped. For me, the primary factor was battery life, and it delivered on the promise. There are machines with higher battery life now (I've had it for a year), but they cost more, so this is still a good choice.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat, but not a long-term computer

Pros: Very portable, battery life is good (though I generally got closer to five, rather than the nine advertised), runs great with Ubuntu, fantastic keyboard for a netbook.

Cons: I had a similar problem as another user, after about nine months, power supply messed up and killed the system. A new ASUS-branded power cord isn't cheap (no less than $50, all things considered), and the power cable is only warrantied for a month, rather than the year that the rest of the netbook is. I'm not sure if my hard drive is even salvageable considering how many unclean shutdowns the power supply put it through. It was certainly a great computer while it lasted, I'm just less than thrilled with how it ended.

Other Thoughts: ASUS is a good company, and I'll still remain loyal to them, but this is a product I'd recommend staying away from.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away

Pros: Portable, comes with WinXP, easy to install ubuntu on it

Cons: Cheaply done, Newegg will not refund you the money if you want to return it.

Other Thoughts: I got this netbook about 2 weeks ago, It worked fine, until yesterday when I turn it on. It began to act crazy, the screen will flirk and then go black and the speakers made a really annoying white sound.

Then I try to return the item and find out that Newegg will not give me the money back because the item is not refundrable (my own fault for not checking the return policy) but they were really nice and offered me a gift card for the amount of the netbook, over all I'm happy with newegg, but HATE the netbook.

Stay away from this netbook

1 out of 5 eggsno good/lemon

Pros: longish battery life (but definitely not 9.5 hours).

Cons: motherboard DC power jack breaks off easily --> no more EEE PC.

Other Thoughts: I would REALLY pass on this one. :(
