4 out of 5 eggsMatches stock AMD cooler

Pros: Solid copper base about 6mm thick, bonded fins. Solid fan mount will hold any 70mm replacement. Includes extra mounting AMD style 754/939 base (for retrofits and MoBo's that come without. Fan leads have nice tube cover, which prevents possible shorts, dust buildup and routing. Includes 1.5gm tube of thermal paste. Cooling matches the stock AMD retail unit

Cons: Nothing particular, but the cam action for the retainer was stiff. I worked it several times before installation to make it smoother. May have been a plastic burr. The fin spacing may make cleaning an issue in dusty dirty environments, though I have no actual observation to back that. Home environment should not be an issue.

Other Thoughts: I ran SisSoft Sandra's environment monitor to compare before/after results against the AMD stock unit for x64 3000+. The stock AL unit was doing a good job, running about 23-30F(13-17C.)above ambient. With the stock fan, the Spire unit matched these numbers, which corresponds to about 0.30C./W thermal resistance. Noise levels about the same or slightly less than stock fan. Changing the fan (which is easy - remove 4 screwws)to a higher CFM unit makes a difference. The haevy copper base did help to level temp spikes. The stock unit temp would climb and fall rapidly as load varied. The Spire unit showed gentler and lower spikes, probably due to the thermal capacity of the copper base.

4 out of 5 eggsBleeehh

Pros: Good price...will probably work ok for lower class AM2 processors as long as you use good thermal paste and good case cooling

Cons: Not for hard core gaming on double cores or overclocked cpus.

Other Thoughts: I don't know what you guys use to stress test your rigs. I use 2 instances of BURNK7.EXE..since it will produce more heat than ANY other application. Running on my AM2 X2 5000+ at stock speeds with 2G DDR2 800 on an ASUS M2N-E, 2 case fans, 1 side fan. Idle temp of 37C, max stress (BURNK7) of 63C, which I think is too high, although I don't think any current game will generate that kind of heat.Fan will be pretty loud at those temps (running at 4500 + rpm)...not bad at all for a cheap cooler but get something better for high end double-cores.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Price - Loud fan!

Pros: Good price. Does cool over my stock AMD X2 4200+ fan/hs combo by about 2-5 celcius

Cons: The fan is LOUD! I mean REALLY LOUD! But it does cool better. Going to look for a replacement ASAP!

4 out of 5 eggsGood Price/Value

Pros: Seems to do fine as far as RPM for me (3000+). But it is quite loud.. I replaced the fan with the AMD stock fan for some comparison, it appears the spire fan will only knock off about 2 degrees C.

Cons: I was hoping for a bit more cooling with the fan..

3 out of 5 eggsFirst one RMA

Comments: Well nice looking easy to install with the exception of having to put in the metal plate on the bottom of the board. The one I got only ran at 900+ RPM. Obviously not good enough. Waiting to receive the replacement fan from newegg in next couple of days.

5 out of 5 eggsQUIET!!! this is a library!

Comments: SHHHHHH!!! HUSH! Don't make a sound......

Be quiet enough, and you may just hear the slightest whimmer from this amazingly quiet device.

...... Untill you plug it in, then VRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOMMM!!! It will shake your house down!!!

Just kidding =)

I give it a 5 out of 5. Of all the fans I have heard, this one is about the best. Very quiet indeed, I highly recommend this product! I was blown away when we turned on the pc, to hardly hear it.
=)
