MASSIVELY COOL
- Pros: If you want a heatsink the size of your kitchen sink then you've come to the right place. Well worth it however if you have the room in your case. With the included fan and the 6 others that circulate around my NZXT Tempest case I can overclock my QuadCore CPU from 2.40Ghz to 3.05Ghz while only raising the temp 1degree Celcius. So in terms of doing the job, it does it. It also looks pretty cool. Fan is very quiet and moves a good amt of air at 1k rpm.
- Cons: I have a sneaking suspicion that there are other heatsinks out there that can cool close to as well as this one but are't so huge. If you have a smaller case or like to tinker around your mobo a lot then you might want to look elsewhere. Cuz once this thing is in there you're not going to have access to that area of your case (not without bloody fingers anyway).
The clips that secure it to the mobo are a total pain to clamp down. I thought I was going to crack my board in the process. Connecting the fan to the heatsink was almost as troublesome. But once its on there its very secure...I guess thats an overall good thing.
- Other Thoughts: I love the job the Scythe is doing keeping CPU temps down but because if the size limitations I will probably look elsewhere when I build my next rig. I prefer to have my fan come attached to the sink; it looks nicer and is less hassle. I should mention that I bought this item for my first ever rig, and I could be getting greedy...I mean it does do a great job keeping temps down.
Works Great!
- Pros: this is a great cooler keeps my AMD 6000+ at under 30 degrees C at idle and never goes over 55 degrees on load.
- Cons: only thing that could be considered a con is size. but i like big CPU coolers so it works for me tho i ran into a snag see other thoughts.
- Other Thoughts: i did not research enough and bought it got it and tried installing it and i cant have the fan on the front next to the ram because my ram is too tall so i had to attach it to the back next to the rear exhaust fan and have it suck air out the back which probably decreases its performance a little bit so just make sure you know what your getting.
big, questional mounting
- Pros: Size, potential to dissapate alot of heat.
- Cons: Size.. Its HUGE! Not alot of clearence for items around it! Its a tough fit. Make sure your using a board with lots of room around it. I would also only recommend this on a board that is lying horizontal. THe retaining clips are NOT up to other coolers.
- Other Thoughts: this unit looks like it should be the best out there, and possibly could... with a high volume fan, and a more secure mount. As it is, I was not comfortable with it to used mounted verticle either. I do think though, that if it used a mounting bracket that I had from another cooler, it would probably screw on to the botttom of this unit, and it would make it secure, but I did not bother to try. Perhaps I will on the next cup upgrade.
