What do you say about the foundation of everything we do on the PC? Microsoft Windows, since its first release, has become an integral part of our computing lives. From photography to e-mail, gaming to multimedia, Windows is the framework on which all the other applications and programs are built. Without the Windows Graphic User Interface, nothing else would work. This is by design. The developers at Microsoft have worked hard to incorporate every aspect of digital information management and entertainment.

Into digital photography? Windows XP lets you transfer pictures from your digital camera to your computer and helps you organize and share your photos. Open a wide world of fantasy and adventure with PC and online gaming — and take a break from reality to have fun with friends and family at any age. Windows Movie Maker lets you create and edit home movies with a few simple drag-and-drop moves. Then share your movie via the Web, e-mail, your computer, or CD. With its playback features, Windows Media Player lets you enjoy your music and movies whenever you like. Windows Messenger lets you instantly communicate with friends and family all over from your computer, using text chat and even voice and video. Learn new graphic software, and share that, too. Write letters, balance checkbooks, communicate in e-mail worldwide, even learn a new hobby with programs all designed to work only with Windows.

Windows XP includes a suite of features to help you protect your PC from hackers and phishers with the latest security enhancements and regular “patches” from Microsoft. It’s simple and easy to set up for the various users in your family, connect several computers, and there are controls which allow you to restrict and monitor a child’s internet travels. Web browsing is a cinch – Internet Explorer 6 provides a simple interface for web browsing and reading, and helps secure yours system from outside interference. This is the base on which every other personal computing program rests, and is essential for your PC.

5 out of 5 eggsXP is alive and well

Pros: No problems during installation and have been using it for about a month with no issues at all. Seems like a fast OS with much lower hardware requirements compared to Vista, although the computer I built is brand new, so it may be a moot point. I don't know.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I was too scared to take my chances with Vista based on all the bad things I've heard about compatability, resource hogging and slowness. I'm not sure if Vista could play older games such as Myst, Riven, or any other game in the Myst series, therefore, I decided to be conservative and go with the older OS, which is XP.

5 out of 5 eggsGet it while you still can!

Pros: Stable, secure, and functional

Cons: Dated, (very minimal) DRM, Windows Genuine Advantage required for updates, allows 2 cores only.
Built-in video and data DVD support not-with-the-times, no fancy built-in graphics, inability to access certain competitor filesystems.

Other Thoughts: Get Windows XP while you still can. With Windows Vista's incompatibilities and heavy DRM, and with the upcoming Windows 7's highly-possible subscribe-to-access-your-own-computer-and-data nature, your best bet is XP. While not as "free" as an open-source operating system, Windows XP is the best compromise between freedom and functionality right now.

4 out of 5 eggshmmmm

Pros: stable OP better then the memory hog of vista

Cons: Built my first computer and went with 4 gigs of memory to go with my anthlon 2.6 dual core brisbane black edition proccessor and 8800gt superclocked edition vid card, to find out XP only recognizes approx. 3.25 gigs of memory.

Other Thoughts: still like it over vista.

4 out of 5 eggsIt works..

Pros: It is windows. It works most of the time, but is far better then anything else out their. Greater then vista in my opinion. Everything just works with Xp. Wish I could say the same for Vista.

Cons: Price. Exspensive for such an old OS. Should be in the 125.00 to 150.00 range.
