Fit a color workgroup-class scanner in a small space with the compact Fujitsu fi-5110C scanner. With its dual color charge-coupled device (CCD) capable of 24-bit color, the 50-sheet Auto Document Feeder (ADF) 5110C is able to capture your documents at resolutions up to 600dpi guaranteeing you good image quality and clarity. You can scan in color, grayscale, and monochrome at duplex speeds up to 30 images per minute at 200dpi monochrome. The unit also features an IR multi-feed detection sensor and long paper scanning up to 34 inches. Setup is easy via a single USB 2.0 connection and a TWAIN driver is included.
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: This model features TWAIN driver support, something that the less expensive 5110EOX* series does not offer. This printer is not on ScanSoft's Paperport 10 approved scanner list which is why I wanted the TWAIN driver as Paperport is an excellent application for managing a paperless office. I was a little nervous that I wouldn't be able to get some of the automation features working with Paperport since the scanner isn't officially supported but it works great. As soon as I put a piece of paper into the document feeder, Paperport is automatically launched and the scan window pops up. Scans are really fast and are of good enough quality that OCR can be used in most cases (Paperport features an integrated OCR feature that allows you to create a searchable database for locating documents).
Cons: The ADF isn't perfect. Sometimes it will suck more than one piece of paper in. I find it depends on the texture of the paper. Some papers are more prone to sticking together than others. That said I was able to pretty efficiently take stacks of folded bank statements from the past 7 years and feed them through without becoming frustrated or impatient. For the most part it does an OK job but just keep in mind that it's not perfect. With large stacks of paper you do kind of have to babysit. Fortunately given the speed of this scanner you won't have to wait too long.
Other Thoughts: I'm REALLY disorganized and have a natural aversion to filing cabinets. As a result papers pile up on top of my desk and I eventually can't see my desk anymore. It's awful. For some reason I find this silly little piece of technology easier to deal with than opening up a drawer and plopping the file in a folder. On the practical side finding something after it's been scanned is MUCH more efficient than going through a filing cabinet, especially if you need to send that document to a client. Instead of faxing it or whatever you can just attach the document to an email since it's already on your hard drive in PDF format. The best purchase I made for my business last year was a Garmin 2610 GPS. This year I'm quite sure that this scanner will come out on top. I've scanned thousands of documents with it so far. I now have offsite backups of those documents. This security has allowed me to shred and recycle all the hard copies thus giving me back valuable space on my desktop and in my office

Worth the money!

Comments: I have used many scanners: flatbed, sheetfed, portable, and multi-function printers. None compare to this printer. I now have 3 in my facility. The speed is incredible, the quality is great. I have coupled it with Adobe Acrobat Pro which makes scanning (and editing scans) a breeze. I highly recommend this printer to anyone who is scanning on a daily basis. It is worth the investment.

Pros: Fast when it is not paper jamming, Twain driver works great, good pdf creation
Cons: Does not handle light paper or multiple pages very well. We have to scan things one at a time to make sure it does not jam. If we could send it back we would.
Other Thoughts: I have always had great luck with Fujitsu Scanners until now. I bought the FI-6130 a month later and it works great with no problem. Strangely enough we have never had this problem with their less expensive scanners either. We needed the twain driver so we got this one. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more on the Fi-6130 (or a little less if you don't need twain) and you'll be glad you did.

good scanner, one blemish

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: 1. small size 2. fairly fast for it's price 3. multi-feed detection 4. linux support
Cons: paper feed pulls bottom sheet, relies on little rubber pads to hold upper sheets in input tray. over time, these pads become slick, and the machine will multifeed. cleaning pads helps some, but eventual replacement will be required. fortunately, not too expensive, and easy to change (no tools).
Other Thoughts: My company owns ~200 of these. We have lately begun to use the fi-6130, which is more expensive, but has a neat reversing roller instead of the pads. If you are going to scan more than 200 sheets per day, buy that one instead.

Great Workflow Scanners
Reviewed By: Senshikaze on 5/3/2008
Tech Level: high - Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: These things are great. I work for a nice sized medical clinic and we are now moving our Medical records over to EMR and going paperless. Have been using these scanners for over a year and half on nearly 150 desks, and these things keep on trucking. ISIS drivers were a must for us, though we use Adobe Capture 3, not the bundled software. Only now, after having them for a while, are we having to actually replace parts in them.
Cons: Sometimes they jam when users get over zealous and try to scan a 20 page folder at once. I'm not sure what the capacity is for these, but it can obviously not do 20. I do have slight problems with the drivers and the interface with our scanning software, but I am not sure which company is to blame for that. Smudges get on the glass over the cathode lights, and you have to take alcohol to it to clean it completely off. Resolution at 300dpi and below is okay, though 600 looks nice, it is way to slow to be practical.
Other Thoughts: Replacing the rubber rollers and the rubber holders is a snap and even smart users can take care of if you show them how. Can be really slow at 600dpi, and is *not* a fast scanner by any means. Get the FI-6140 if you want fast. Other than that, if your mid to large sized work is trying to go paperless and you have the patience to set up a correct document server(s), this is the scanner for you.
