CAUTION WITH 10k WD RAPTOR Hard Drives
- Comments: This is a very nice looking machine, i like it a lot. I am using this with two SATA Western Digital Raptor Drives. I had headache after headache trying to get windows to install. I kept getting BSOD errors after the first initial install reboot. I tried everything, every driver shuttle had for SATA, replaced hardware, and I finally stumbled upon a forum that said you have to use the Silicon Image (integrated satalink) drivers if you are using WD Raptor drives. Shuttle support was oblivious to the problem and told me to RMA it. I tried the drivers from Silicon Image and VIOLA!!! it worked! Two Raptors in RAID 0, incredibly fast with 3.0. Using integrated s-video for MCE 2005, had to change a few settings in Bios but it looks great with dual tuner Hauppauge MCE 500. Newegg credit card verification was a PAIN! But other than that everything was ok.
Faceplate does seem to be separating, but it is no big deal, I might just super glue it. Other than that the case is of high quality.
second hard drive possible
- Comments: Unscrewed the 6 in 1 reader and cut off about an inch of the alum frame with a band saw. Connector too short so dremeled a hole in the rack on the side to lead it in. Second HD now just fits with only 2 screws. Works perfectly and sata raid 0 is fast.
Definately flash bios first. To avoid the FDD problem, I slipstreamed the XP disk with the RAID drivers added and it worked perfectly. Super little box.
- Comments: Cool little system. I would advise, however, anyone building a system with this to _NOT_ hook up the 6-in-1 card reader until after your O/S is installed. I installed XP with the reader hooked up and the reader sucked up drive letters C: and D:, the NEC 16X DVD+/-RW became E:, and the system drive had F:. This was fixed by disconnecting the reader, wiping the hard drive, and reinstalling XP. I found that tip at the Shuttle site.
