5 out of 5 eggsLow cost, Low power, high value

Pros: Perfect solution for a cheap and basic web-surfer. Plays very nicely with Ubuntu and 256MB. Pleasant and responsive for lightweight web surfing: mp3 and flash playback and streams work fine. Apps such as XMMS, Open Office and Abiword are very usable, too.

Cons: Not so great for video...Google/YouTube vids have a tendency to play with audio skipping and low frame rate.

Other Thoughts: Rock solid stability, no issues so far with this Linux distro.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate - a year later

Pros: Still as Promised, a stable little system to do basic tasks. It's got everything you need to set up a small files server, thin client (my use), surfing terminal. Currently deployed about 40 with a stripped down 2k pro as thin clients. Stable and useful. Not very fast, but as a remote access device it's great. Also had great luck with SLAX, PuppyLinux and MyDSL (MyDSL was fastest and easiest to get going, with virutally no modifications)

Cons: Louder than expected (can't get q-fan to function). Occassional Blue Screen during shutdown (probably something we stripped out to thin out W2K os).

Other Thoughts: Install OS on 512mb Flash, leave bays open for HDD, also had great experiance running Linux (several distos) from USB stick. Don't try instense computing, it won't do it.

4 out of 5 eggsCute low-power machine

Pros: Solid construction, good looks. Very cool and quiet operation - It makes less noise than most notebooks. Air blowing out is not noticably warmer than ambient. With 7200 RPM hard drive installed, I measured typical AC power draw at 30-40 watts. It will top out around 55 watts at full tilt and CDROM running. Stable, easy to configure, no bugs found yet. Built in video is not fast, but is sharp and clear. Runs Mandriva 2006 Linux, and Mandriva One Linux (live CD). You could use one of these with Mandriva One and never need a hard disk (this actually works pretty well). With both of those releases of Mandriva, all hardware was auto-detected and worked with no configuration necessary. Easy sub-$xxx workstation! Would also make a great car computer or jukebox. :)

Cons: SLOW by today's standards. Depending on what it is doing, it is either just a little faster or a little slower than my Pentium II/366 notebook. My only real gripe though is the lack of a SATA power connector on the power supply. Be sure to get a drive with the old type of power plug, or get an adapter!

Other Thoughts: For a combination of low noise, low power requirements and low cost, this machine excels. Add RAM and a hard disk, and you're in business. You don't even need the HD with a live CD linux distribution (like Mandriva One)!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little browser/server

Pros: Has been running FC3 24/7 for nearly a year without problems.
Can play DVD movies with unichrome drivers. Firefox, OpenOffixxxxg, Thunderbird, xine (media player), xmms (mp3 player), gtkpod (ipod music manager) all work well. A complete home system for under $xxx assuming you already have keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

Cons: 3D acceleration not working, but no one would buy this for games anyway.
Limited expansion (1 PCI slot, room for 1 HD + cd/dvd).

Other Thoughts: Bough a 512MB stick of RAM and 40 GB hard drive, also replaced the CDROM with a DVD burner. Makes a great firewall/home network server with addition of a second ethernet PCI card.

5 out of 5 eggsPuppyLinux & stick of RAM

Pros: Upgraded review by Ted-dog, using new v2 of puppylinux results outstanding! Cooling is great to beat the Texas heat, the slightly warmer than room temp exit air. helps keep the computer room cooler.

Cons: Busy IDE warning on linux boot, does not effect use.

Other Thoughts: Still think good machine for the money, puppylinux makes it shine!

4 out of 5 eggsPuppyLinux + stick of ram

Pros: Works w/o harddrive boot from PuppyLinux liveCD loaded into RAM (256M 266DDR) fast, upgraded to DVD=RW with multisession Puppy liveDVD, installed package to use unicrome-drivers and have it playing full screen DVDs with no issues at 1024x768 24bit. As good as my other more powerful machine. Very inexpensive, clever swingout exposes motherboard & back of drives.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: I'll have a iso ready soon pre-done to support this low priced wonder on the puppylinux forum

4 out of 5 eggsunobtrusive

Pros: -small
-fairly quiet (thanks, q-fan!)
-inexpensive
-cool temperature
-small
-integrated goodness
-gets the job done

Cons: -slightly louder than asus t2. i.e., I can actually hear it.
-drive bus i/o is awfully, horribly low (granted, we are talking p2/p3-era chipsets here) -- do not use this as a fileserver unless you put the drives on a pci card.
-bit hard to work inside, but that's the price of small.

Other Thoughts: installed a 4-port rtl 8139/8035 pci card; using as a firewall/nat (devil linux, highly recommend) that boots from CD (w/ read-only floppy for config)

turning on 4 way interleave in bios did not seem to change performance much.

lm_sensors' fancontrol may be able to make this even quieter than q-fan, but have not tried it yet (make sure to turn q-fan OFF if you want to use pwm/fancontrol!)

no linux issues with any of the hardware devices (nb: the c3 is almost a 686 but lacks the cmov instruction -- so make sure to install i586-compatible distros/packages rather than i686. e.g. asterisk@home or pcbsd will not install on this box without some extra hard work)

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Super quiet, runs cool, very stable, very small, runs like a champ!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I've been running FC3 on this machine for a long time now, using it as a router/fileserver/media streaming. It is awesome, I wish ASUS would make an updated one with an Eden or C7 processor.

5 out of 5 eggsMakes Wonderful file server

Pros: Love this little guy. Quiet, rock solid little box. The great thing about this is that you can put 2 serial ATA drives and have a raid setup to Raid 1 to duplex your data. I loaded Windows 2000 on the one at the office and use it as a file and internal web server. Thinking of buying one for home and loading Linux on it for a file and media server. Makea a terrific set it and forget it server.

Cons: Tight space to set serial ATA cables hooked up. Obviously not the most powerful box, but for just moderate server needs it's more than adequate.
