3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: good looking; nice set of features for a slimline; seemed to have enough room to work

Cons: unit was DOA

Other Thoughts: unit was not replacable within needed timeframe; cost was refunded after talking to ASUS tech support and Newegg

4 out of 5 eggsDo your product research

Pros: Small footprint, PCI Express, Q-Fan to keep it quiet, Integrated graphics, 915 chipset.

Cons: No PCI Express 16.

Other Thoughts: Do not be like the other reviewer and fail to do proper product research before you pay. Yes, this system only uses low profile cards, but there are plenty available for most applications.

4 out of 5 eggsQuiet and Stable

Pros: Very Quiet. Intelligent Fans mean unit is very quiet under most conditions. ASUS includes a good CPU fan allowing you to use OEM CPUs. Intel chipset seems very stable, no issues.

Cons: As stated, there are some drawbacks: No real room for a FDD, despite having the physical space for one. The HDD mounting scheme is slick with rubber isolators, but one of the plastic latches has snapped, forcing me to use the other set. As mentioned expandability isn't a strength, but for a standard slimline business machine, the 275w power supply, and quiet operation provide what the customer wants. No card reader, no PCI-E slot. Even if it did, it would have to be a half height card.

Other Thoughts: A good stable platform for the office, not very expandable.

2 out of 5 eggsWhat was Asus thinking?

Comments: I'd built a couple of systems around the Pundit-R and was looking forward to using the Pundit-PE3 for a new customer and I'm not sure I'd do it again.

The Pundir-PE3 is a nice box with lots of room for an SFF case. It's got a good sized power supply and cools well.

Version 1 of the manual on the Asus site dewscribes the -PE3 as coming standard with a 6-in-1 storage card reader. My system didn't come with a reader and the V2 manual dropped all reference to the reader. OK that's fair, the reader wasn't described in the ad and it's not in the current manual so I'll just pick up an internal reader and install it in the 3.5" internal bay. NOT! The bay is there just as described in the ad but the faceplate is only half height so good luck finding ANY 3.5" external device that'll fit. By the way, the current manual doesn't even talk about this 3.5" bay even though it's mentioned in the ad.

The box is listed as having a pair of PCI slots and an 1X PCI Express slot. They are there and since my customer needs a modem I figure I'll just slap in a standard PCI Winmodem. NOT AGAIN! The box only supports low profile cards. This was NOT the case with the Pundit-R and nowhere in the ad OR in the manual was this little fact mentioned. This problem is bound to bite builders who purchase the Pundit-PH3 and expect to install a graphics card in the PCI Express X16 slot that model "features".

I've bought a lot of Asus products over the years and this is the most disappointing one I've run across. Be sure it meets your needs (i.e. no 3.5" external device OR add-on card requirements) or you'll be as frustrated with it as I am.
