3 out of 5 eggsJury still out

Pros: Feels solid, nice power, love the dual PCI-X.

Cons: Did have a mysterious crash two nights ago.

The Tyan 1U servers I have bought haven't come with very good rackmounting instructions. I have eventually gotten then hang of it (have 4 total now), but I felt like one of the chimps from 2001: A Space Oddessy while doing it.

Other Thoughts: I don't like the fact that I had an unnecessary crash out of nowhere. My other three Tyan servers (Transport G20 1Us that take a single dual-core Athlon X2) have been rock solid with identical configurations. Not a single crash amongst the three.

It should be noted that I bought the B2891G24S4H as an "open box", am using two semi-old 1.6 Ghz Opterons that have had significant use elsewhere, and some older memory (also saw use in a different box), so maybe that's the source of my crash.

I'll probably buy a couple of new dual-core processors and new memory (maybe even another one of these barebones servers) and report back later.

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely Solid

Pros: Loaded 64-bit secure LAMP, put it in the rack, have not touched it in over a year-- 0 down time. Solid, plan to buy a few more.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Forget the on board RAID, it is a version of "fake RAID" and the Linux built-it is faster and more reliable. Pick quality drives and memory as well.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible

Pros: 1RU design loaded with features. Can handle 16GB of memory and RAID10.

Cons: RAID fails frequently, even with new drives. We RMA'd the unit once and will be again soon. This is one of the worst purchases I have ever made. Tyan support has been nonexistant.

Other Thoughts: This unit will guarantee downtime. Look elsewhere if you need uptime.

1 out of 5 eggsThe BGG Betrayer!

Pros: On a plus side, this server has handled a website with massively increased traffic over the last year...

Cons: ...but not well. In the last 12 mos., it has had multiple failures and two total crashes. Manufacturer support for this product is almost non-existent, leaving small businesses and sites almost without any options except to make new purchases. For today's standards, if you expect your site to pull in over 10k hits/month, this server is simply woefully inadequate.

Other Thoughts: That being said, is the way to go when it comes to gaming gear and tech. This server just happens to be below their usual high standards of quality.

5 out of 5 eggssolid server, tyan quality

Pros: Well designed, easy to install components, half-height PCI-X and full height PCI-express x16 allows your choice of SATA Raid controller. Used Areca 1210 here, along with 4x Seagate 7200.9 150G drives in a RAID10, 2x Opteron 270 Italy, and 4x 1G Corsair DDR400 ECC-Registered Ram. All components functional on Gentoo Linux in 64bit mode.

Cons: Very deep, make sure your 4-post rack is deep enough! Loud, but to be expected, fans throttle down to acceptable levels. If using for a virtualization (VMWare) server, note that socket 940 does not support CPUs with enhanced virtualization support.

Other Thoughts: Last reviewer complained about onboard SATA Raid being software-based (e.g. Windows-only), it's a moot point as you'll never find a 'real' hardware raid solution on a motherboard SATA, SCSI, SAS or otherwise. Spend the extra money, buy a real hardware RAID card like Areca, LSI MegaRaid, 3ware, this kit can support about anything.

4 out of 5 eggsVery Nice...barring the worthless RAID

Pros: Installing components was cake. The case is manufactured for getting to components very easily. Only needed a screwdriver.
Setup was very easy using Ubuntu Dapper Linux. Everything was detected and installed without a hitch.

Cons: The only reason I gave this board a 4 star rating instead of 5 is because of the NVRaid solution which is worthless on any OS other than Windows. C'mon Tyan, it's 2006! Ensure that all the components on your high-end products work under Unix/Linux!!!

Other Thoughts: I installed Linux software RAID with no problems.
This machine is very loud. But it's expected for a 1U.
Here's other components I purchased from Newegg for this server which works fine:
4 x Patriot Signature 2GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM ECC Registered DDR 400 for a total of 8GB memory.
2 x AMD Dual-Core Opteron 275 Italy
4 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 SATA NCQ drives for RAID 1 with 2 drives a piece.
