You DO get free updates!
- Pros: Good deal on a good unit. Easy to use interface. Free map updates. Street names are clearly understandable.
- Cons: At first it looks like the device is not eligible for free updates. Not true, see below. TTS not available with human voices. Computer voices talk a little too fast.
- Other Thoughts: When you first plug the device into your computer and run the software, it DOES say the free map update has expired. HOWEVER; once you create an account with tomtom and link it to your device, the free map update suddenly is activated. Perhaps the updates are shown to initially be expired is based on the registration of the previous owner. Once you are linked to it as the new owner its looked at like a new device.
no map updates? why would I bother?
- Pros: nice product
- Cons: no map upgrades - who would still navigate with a map from the 50's ?
- Other Thoughts: lack of accurate maps detracts from the function of the unit over time, perhaps you just want us to buy a new one every year?
Beware, will have old maps
- Pros: Works well. Large screen. Can get LOUD. Reads street names aloud.
- Cons: Unfortunately, even though the box came with a note card saying that it had a free mapdownload from tomtom.com, refurbished units are NOT eligible. I emailed their tech support and they said to scan the flyer and email it back to them. I've been dealing with this for 2 weeks and it is VERY frustrating. It doesn't look like I'm going to get the upgrade for free, which is a huge deal because my town is basically missing from the included maps and tomtom wants another $20 for 3 months of map updates. Grrrrrr.
- Other Thoughts: tomtom customer service leaves a LOT to be desired.
