A home network is all about centralizing information and now it’s easier than ever with the HP MediaSmart Server EX495. Centralization, protection and entertainment are just a few of the reasons to add the MediaSmart EX495 to your home network. Own it today!
Pros: Easy to setup and use for backup of machines. The media aggregator went and found all my mp3s and other media. Quiet, cool, sleep mode I am very happy with the ease of use of this product.
Cons: Needs additional hard drives for folder replication. HP should just stick two hard drives in from the start.
Other Thoughts: I have been eyeing NAS/WHS for awhile, I am glad I waited until this iteration of the HP Mediasmart server, it was exactly what I needed to do the backup on all my home computers. I purchased two Samsung 1TB drives (N82E16822152185) from NewEgg and stuck them in for additional storage and to run the folder replications. They installed just fine. These drives don't appear to be available anymore.

Pros: Server is straight forward and easy to use for backup and general share drives. Its a no brainer setup for these features.. Creates personal user area that is integrated into XP login. Backup software is integrated nicely between the server and client softwares.
Case and construction is excellent. Fans are nearly silent. Only sound is the clicking HD. HD install is beautifully simple and requires no tools.
Power consumption for 2 HD configuration ranges from 40 watts to 65 watts (85% CPU load).
Free DNS name if you use a canned HP name, plus you get a free https certificate for secure web access.
Video converter is a nice plus Media streaming works well for music and photos, slow for video Iphone application is free but very slow. Lots of instructions for people that dont read manuals. For example, Web streaming as a checklist with links to sections you need to configure.
Cons: The software is a mix between HP and Microsoft. The software does have its bugs. Media collector tends to forget what to do and needs to be reminded(client). Also destination directories are not configurable. Video converter has problems with SD TV recordings and sometimes changes video aspect ratios. This can be solved by forcing an aspect ratio versus detecting. Streaming standard DVD over web-gui is horribly un-usable. Client web GUI seems to hang, but several minutes later recovers. Better to let the video converter re-compress to H-264.
Other Thoughts: Has a nice balance for novice users and power users. Management of the server is via internal LAN. Everything else is available externally if you configure remote connectivity. Uses Twonkymedia for streaming services.
Based on trying to stream mpeg2 DVD content, I dont think streaming HD content is even viable.

Pros: time machine support extra hp software size easy upgrades
Cons: price
Other Thoughts: This thing is pretty awesome overall. While there are a ton of other (or even build your own) home server solutions I wanted something that was future proof and could easily handle tasks I throw at it. The main feature of this that sent me over the edge was the mac compatibility.
