WHS vs. RAID

white Reviewed By: Bryan on 6/16/2009
Rating + 4
Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: less than 1 day
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Included HDD was a Western Digital Caviar Green, a generally reliable drive.
Technologically proficient users can quickly bypass the WHS console and treat the server as a standard Windows server file/print server if so desired.
Cons: HDD hot-swap enclosures seem a little flimsy.
Some WHS bundled services, like automatic back up, begin enabled.
Other Thoughts: Earlier versions of the Easystore line shipped with an Acer supplied interface that, among other things, allowed for RAID configuration. This model now ships with Windows Home Server which uses Microsoft's Disk Extension software and should not be combined with a RAID according to common wisdom. NewEgg does not list RAID as a supported technology in the Specs, but I had found such claims on other retailers; the limited documentation on Acer's website did not clarify.
But, so everyone knows: this product does not support RAID as configured upon delivery.

Solid WHS

white Reviewed By: Compulim on 9/14/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: It comes with WHS PP1 and I installed PP2 on it. Very solid and stable. It have 1GbE and I also upgraded my router to an Apple Airport Extreme (1GbE + dual WiFi). With my wired 1GbE network with pre-existing Cat5+ wires, the drive is so fast that it just works like local drive, and *never* have network outage even copying files with GBs.

The extra bay is very important as you need extra drives for file mirroring, I bought the combo with 1TB WD Green drive, and the one inside is also 1TB WD Green but slightly different model number.

When I wake up in the morning, I don't feel WHS is laggy at all. It just works like anytime of day.

8" x 8" x 9" with built-in power adapter is really really small. Just slightly wider than a 6-bay.

The machine is quiet, although with big fan on side.

An extra PCIe 4x sounds handy if you need to add extra eSATA drives, although I didn't use it yet.

WHS comes with Custom Domain, you can register XXX.homeserver.com (with HTTPS cert) for free.
Cons: It comes with preinstalled anti-virus software (bloatware) and asks for activation. I jumps to Remote Desktop console and removed it in Add/Remove Programs.
Other Thoughts: I don't own any MacBook/iPhone, so Time Capsule and iPhone streaming is not important to me.

With PP2, I have WMP + Media Center + W7, all music/videos just appears like it was stored locally, although it don't support HomeGroup yet.

Some people may want to wait until new W2K8-based WHS, but I think as long as the machine works as advertised, why bother? You don't want to run lots of stuff with an Atom, won't you? Perhaps W2K8 is better performant, but it is not underperforming right now too. Anyway, when it's out, I will surely upgrade.

If you want to buy a NAS, buy WHS instead, it have more features than a normal NAS.

If you considered about RAID for data safety, get a WHS too, it have per-file mirroring and able to combine drives capacity to form one very big network share.

If WHS can't boot, just grab the drive out and put it into another computer, the files are all there without any magic, just copy out.

I recommend getting an additional harddisk when buying this

Fast and easy

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: You don't need to use the interface they gave you, in the end you can log in using remote desktop and its like any other computer. The one good thing about the interface is setting up your default share folders since the software on this drive will combine all your drives into one share point so you don't need one for each drive, just one simple folder.
I got about 50% Gb speeds but my hard drives could be limited and also some options like jumbo packets and other things are not tweeked by default. The temps I got while the unit stayed in an enclosed area with 3 other machines were around 66c and while stressing the unit out for a full day it never went over 77c
Cons: By default it checks duplicate on all your shared folders. Its setup to run a ghetto intranet/internet page just for sharing files but is very slow and useless compared to Ftp or running a none windows web server like apache seperate. I wish there were two GB nic's. It also comes installed with a virus trial program that will ask you for money till you register or conveniently uninstall it(manually). Besides a little card slot in the back its not upgradable short of adding Usb drives.
Other Thoughts: There are guides out there for making installed programs like utorrent and ftp into services using a program from the windows dev kit(free). Googling will find more detailed info on this, but using that and whatever program you want to run 24/7 could work out nicely. While there is add-in support for some programs and it looks easier then what i said before, have fun finding updated info or download locations for that method as M$ doesn't host any of the project files and most of them are out of date or abandoned.
This unit gave me more then what I expected so I gave it a 5.

Perfect

Pros: For the price and what you get you cannot beat it. This the first pre assembled machine I have bought in years as I usually build all my systems. It is well designed with ample storage. It runs quiet and I have never had issues with heat. To me the software is elementary and even a non techie should be able to use it. Although this is basically a central hub to your home network allowing central storage of media and backups, it certainly can be used for much more. I run a HTPC connected to the server and play all my movies, music, and pictures with no issues. I run music streaming service to my android cell phone. I have an FTP File server running as well. Possibilities are endless with this thing from the novice to the expert depending on needs.
Cons: NONE
Other Thoughts: People are quick to give 1 "egg" when they are mad. If you follow the setup and do it right you won't brick this machine. Also it is a "headless" unit meaning no video out. It can be managed via RDP easily. I elected to install a PCIE X1 video card which dropped right in.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Read my other reviews from 9/26/2009.
Cons: Read my other reviews from 9/26/2009.
Other Thoughts: It was kind of a work out to get linux to run on this box. First of all, a video output is a MUST. I got a cheap pci express x1 card that works ok, more ambitious folks can build a video output using the onboard header. The bios on this thing is very sparse. It does give you the option to switch boot media, but it would keep trying to boot from the drives even after I made change to USB and whatnot. I had to physically remove the drives before it would boot off of a different media. There is no option to enable the hardware raid, even though the chipset supports it.. One neat thing that the board has is a built in 256mb usb flash drive, perfect for a mini distro of linux, or in my case, /boot so I can boot off of a software raid. There's a jumper on the motherboard to make the flash drive the primary boot device (otherwise you'd have to hit the system rescue button to boot from it, as that's where the installer for WHS is kept by default). Can't get the disk lights to work in linux =(.
