Designed to be an integral part of home entertainment, the Sony PlayStation 3 goes beyond being simply a gaming console. It delivers uncompressed and unconverted digital picture and sound into your existing equipment. You see full 1080p HD resolution with 128-bit pixel precision and hear Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1 and Linear PCM 7.1 audio.
Make no mistake; however, the PS3 brings the kind of gaming action demanded of seventh generation consoles. IBM's cell processor and a co-developed Nvidia graphics processor combine to perform over two trillion calculations per second which translates into immersive gaming environments and instantaneous responsiveness on screen. The revolutionary Sixaxis controller takes game input beyond button mashing by sensing the movement of the entire controller. Changes in position and angle can be used to control movements on screen in games that support the technology.
The PS3 includes Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi technology to connect things wirelessly. The console can also be used to connect both to the Internet as well as to Sony's online community, the PlayStation Network where players can compete against opponents from around the world. Players can also connect their PlayStation Portable for more expanded game play with both systems. The Blu-Ray media drive built into each PS3 is the new default standard for high definition video and will play movie discs in that format as well as supporting CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD-ROM formats.

Good, Bad, Beautiful
- Pros: Excellent as a game system and as a media center. Upscaling on DVDs is good, BluRay playback is a nice plus. Games are beautiful, as would be expected. Free online play is a winner every time.
Upgrading the HDD to store more media is easy and the system comes with the instructions and specifications on what you need. Definately a huge selling point for anyone who wants to transfer video or music to the system from a computer.
- Cons: You absolutely have to buy a Component or HDMI cable to appreciate this system. Also there are no expansion slots on the 40gig PS3 system.
As with all consoles, for all time, the PS3 suffers from a distinct lack of RAM. Sadly, to balance price v. profits, RAM is usually the first thing they skimp on, and as such, we have more and more load times.
- Other Thoughts: You cannot play PS2 games on this system, and that's really the only selling point the larger system has. PS1 playback is possible, but not recommended - the graphics on all PS1 games I have tried were distorted badly. If you have one, I suggest keeping your PS2 around if you wish to play older games.
Super sweet
- Pros: WIFI, Free online game play, Bluray, Wireless connections, easy setup. LUCKY
- Cons: They should all play PS2 games not just the larger priced version.. To me either you offer it or you dont. I spent 400 $ on this and even though I dont have any ps2 games left it would be nice to have the option to play them... even if I could buy an update for a couple of bucks it would be nice, I think they may offer it later but we'll see.
- Other Thoughts: This has all kinds of great features that havent even been explored yet, I am sure in the next year or two this will have the best of everything, there is more possibilities with bluray than HD. I dont like the price on extra controllers, way to high but for I knew all of the cons before buying so I cant downgrade the reveiw because it. Newegg is awesome, I didnt buy the ps 3 here but I did buy all my other components for it, HDMI here is super awesomely priced.

Great Console
- Pros: Like the Playstation 2, the console has a great lifespan. The quality, reliability and the steady flow of great games makes this a must have.
- Cons: Can't think of any.
The PS3 is finally coming along
- Pros: Very powerful system. Excellent Blu-Ray player...with automatic updates as needed. Blu-Ray discs also load faster than any stand-alon BD player I've seen. The Ps3 has a nice interface...although not as user-friendly as the XBox 360...it's usable and easy to personalize and is easy to navigate once you learn where certain options are hidden. It's basicaly a computer...which is either good or bad depending on how you look at it. I find that to be a toss-up for me. Although not as many games as it's competitor...there are a number of A+ games you won't find anywhere else. Such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavenly Sword, Hot Shots Golf, Gran Turismo 5 and the upcoming GOW 3 to name the ones I can think of. The PS3 marketplace is much improved and easy to fidn what you are looking for. Wi-fi is a plus...although I don't recommend it for gaming.
- Cons: Online is nothing compared to XBox Live. Sony is leaps and bounds behind Microsoft in that area. There is a reason it's free. Yes you have to pay for XBox Live...but I have no problem paying $50 a year for the quality they deliver. (I tossed that comment in because someone always brings up that you have to pay for it, sorry it just bugs me when they say that.) After I bought my 40gb PS3 and installed MGS4 and 7 other games...I had only 9gbs left of free space. It has the same problem that haunts the 360...not enough hard drive space. 20 and 40gb...and even 80gb hard drives are becoming out-dated and not useful enough if you are like me and store a lot of media on them. Having to install most games at 4gb of H.D.D. space reminds me of a computer...I kinda have a problem with that...as will some people that like their console gaming simple. Get readI know it speeds up loading times...but 40gb is not enough space if you want to play a lot of games. Keep that in mind...I'm not exaggerating
- Other Thoughts: After install 8 games and 2 demos...and a few short videos I was left with 9gbs of usable H.D.D. space. I read around on the internet a bit and discovered you can swap the hard drive out with a larger one and it doesn't void your warranty. Call Sony if you need confirmation on that. So I bought a 160gb hard drive...from newegg of course...and slapped it in. Now I don't have to worry about free space. After that it's about the same price as and 80gb...but twice the H.D.D. space if you think you need it. The H.D.D. has to be 2.5" SATA. Sony told me you could go as big as 250gb. Hope this helps someone.
for the features and the price who can argue?
- Pros: While I don't have this model (i have the original 60gb model) the console is great, no problems with hardware malfunctions, native blu-ray support for hundreds of dollars less than the lowest priced player, swapable hard drive support (i have 120gb hard drive in mine) excellent game line up (now)
- Cons: console runs very hot, is a bit of a dust magnet due to glossy nature of case, swapping hard drive requires back-up of data, which requires an external hard drive, most games dont utilize full 1080p, lackluster games line-up for first 10 months of console, lack of emotion chip in newer console limits re playability of ps2 titles.
- Other Thoughts: If you have an hd tv than the perfect companion is the PS3, i would personally recomend the 80gb, but both are good products
