5 out of 5 eggsWireless Camera

Pros: Very easy to set-up. While this is wireless, I have one using the Ethernet connection as wireless does not cover that area., Great price.

Cons: Dependedent on D-Links server for access.

2 out of 5 eggsWireless does not work

Pros: Easily searchable via RJ45 wired connection

Cons: Spent several hours trying to connect to wireless router. Tried WPS, credentials, and every other way but it would not connect.

Other Thoughts: I've had good luck with other Dlink products in the past but based on the amount of fruitless frustration this has put me through, will definately be my last.

5 out of 5 eggsD-Link 931L

Pros: For the price, they get the job done and serve the purpose that I bought them. Set up was pretty straight forward with my D-Link router. And since I have a D-Link Home Cloud App-Enabled router I was able to easily set up "mydlink" account" which allows me to view my cameras online. No port forwarding necessary. I also love the fact that D-Link has an app that allows me to view my cameras on my android smartphone and tablet.

Cons: My con isn't toward the camera. It's the Java software that's needed to view the live video.Slow!!! :-)

Other Thoughts: I've had nothing but good experiences with tech support. Recently I had to call in because I was unable to access the advance settings. I spoke with Rochelle (ID #AR004211). She was great. She patiently worked with me until my issue was fully resolved. And believe me, since part of my work consist of working with customers. I can be rather critical of customer service reps. Great products! Excellent support!

1 out of 5 eggsNot Happy with this lower Model DCS-931L

Pros: Wireless Extender. And that about it.

Cons: Camera froze everyday and sometimes can't even't reboot the device from web GUI. Drop this sale model.

Regretted buying this model.

Manufacturer Response:

We want to thank you for the feedback as we take the input into great consideration and we are sorry to hear that you encountered issues with the product. We advise you to factory reset the camera (by pressing the reset button with a paper clip for 10 seconds) and then download and install the latest firmware from www.support.dlink.com. 2 out of 5 eggsWhat is not mentioned..

Pros: Read the other reviewers Pro reviews. I agree with them rather than restate the obvious.
I submitted a review earlier but it did not post...

If your buying just 1 camera, buy this but if it's the start of a camera network...read on...

Cons: I spent a week off and on playing with D-VIEW CAM the program that allows you to record and use multiple cameras...
PLENTY OF BUGS- rather than go go into it here, go to their website and read the forum on D-VIEW CAM FAQ's and BUG REPORTS. D-LINK may be fixing them as we write but I am writing this today..I have see no new releases.
Biggest bug in my opinion..D-VIEW CAM only recognizes D-LINK cameras!!! Other manufacturers camera and software recognizes all camera's. So how do you get support if you are using camera D and Software T?
No linux-apple-chrome support..

I understand but cannot experience D-VIEW cam will only allow you to view 1 camera live. My other software that came with another manufacturers camera allows me to view it's camera and my D-link live at the same time.

Other Thoughts: I am a NEWEGG EGGPERT REVIEWER. I don;t get paid but sometimes I get to keep the product. This one is going to my daughter and my newborn grandson. I am keeping another manufacturers and moving forward to TPZ. They are now under $100.
1 egg off- buggy software.
1 egg off- software only recognizes D-Link Devices
1 egg off-no linux-apple-chrome support..they are O/S's becoming popular. and a DLINK router can operate with them so...there you go another egg.

If DLINK routers can handle various manufacturers computers with multiple OS's. They are not whole heartly in the IP wireless cloud camera business. I suspect the guts of both my camera's come out of the same off shore factory.. the start up manuals are virtually word for word..

5 out of 5 eggsNeat little camera.

Pros: Setup is for the most part plug and play, The camera will automatically setup port forwarding via Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and get a DHCP address when you wire it in via an Ethernet cable. If you don’t have an Ethernet cable, that isn’t an issue either as this device has a WPS button making connecting to wireless really easy. Finding it on the network is simple with the setup software, locating it automatically, instead of searching through manually. And of course you can set it up all manually without the software (Get the IP address either via a IP scanning tool or your routers DHCP address leases, and set it up through there.
The picture quality isn’t HD (to be expected its 640x480), but it is still clear enough, and is compressed with H.264. Motion detection is great, you can have it email pictures to yourself when motion is detected (can configure the motion sensitivity too) I found that 35-40% work for my uses. I have mine setup to email my Gmail address. You can also have it email you the audio that it hears, or a video clip.

There is of course a smartphone application to view your camera remotely, you can either use the cloud camera functionality, or you can use mydlink Lite, to connect to it (would recommend using a dynamic DNS service is you go that route, as your average household IP changes with some frequency).
The WiFi range extender is a great option to have on this camera, more wireless devices should have this functionality, it is limited to a maximum of 5 client devices.
I have never encountered a wall mounting system so simple as this, you pop off the camera, attach the base to the wall (with the included screws) and pop on the camera.

Cons: Low visibility in poorly lit areas. If it is focused at a window where light is coming in it washes out the surroundings, losing in detail but still visible. Power cord is rather short so you can’t run it up high on a wall without having to do some modifications to the cable or getting an extension cord. Doesn’t work with PoE (which is only really used in an enterprise scenario). The firmware I got on the unit was several months old (revision 1.0) I upgraded it to 1.01

Other Thoughts: Image quality wise it is very similar to my DCS-930L, there is about a 1-2 second delay between the camera and what you see, even on LAN, but that is to be expected. The ability to turn off the green light on the back is nice, I find that it is too bright. The final setup I did without D-Link’s cloud, I like my privacy, its not that I don’t trust D-Link, however only having me know the information to access the camera and not have it stored in servers is comforting. Viewing the video either requires an installed ActiveX control (IE only) or Java installed (any browser).

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good little camera!

Pros: Very small camera! About the size of the flip-up portion of a flip-up cell phone.

Setup is EXTREMELY easy, even if you don't have a cloud enabled router! As long as your router supports UPnP and DHCP (most do), all you have to do is plug it in to power and the network, download the setup program and run it. It'll find your camera, set up port forwarding through UPnP, and register it on mydlink.com . (Optionally you can put in your wifi settings at this point so you can disconnect it from the wired network.) Then either go to mydlink.com or use a smartphone app to view the camera. It really doesn't get much easier than that!

Cons: The flip side to easy setup is that it also leaves you wide open. I looked at what the DCS-931L requested via UPnP, and it forwards both port 80 (HTTP) and 443 (SSL) to itself. While that does make sense, those are the number one and number two stops for anyone who is running a port scanner on the internet (which is everybody and their brother these days). So if there is ever a security issue with the DCS-931L's firmware, and you have it registered with mydlink.com, you're going to be blowing in the breeze!

Other Thoughts: After performing a factory reset, I captured all the traffic from the DCS-931L to make sure that it wasn't surreptitiously contacting dlink even when not configured for mydlink.com service. Happy to report that it never even attempted to connect. Yay! No hidden security nightmares from a backdoor channel to dlink!

Not a bad little camera at all! Wi-Fi extender works even with dd-wrt. Obviously it's only at half bandwidth, but that's to be expected with any wifi repeater.

Very small. I tend to put cameras between the door and storm door, and some cameras have a tough time fitting. The DCS-931L can easily fit between them. In addition, should you need more room you could cut the base down if you were mounting it via screws by an inch or possibly two without compromising its integrity.

Nice product!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat camera. My cat is weird.

Pros: - Easy to follow setup
-Easy to use
-D-Link provides great apps and software to use with the camera, very easy to use
-Very nice and clear picture
-Microphone seems to pick up very clear audio (was pleasantly surprised)
-Has a built-in Wi-Fi extender
-Has sound and motion detection, so it can (it is optional) send alerts to you
-Comes with everything you need to either be wall-mounted or set up on a flat surface (like a desk)
-Seems to work well in low-light situations (not in complete darkness though)
-Can be set up through ethernet, Wi-Fi, or WPS, so flexible to fit your network.
-Camera can be viewed online through the internet (for viewing through a computer) or with a mobile app
-Nice design, small and nice to look at.
-You can actually turn the power LED on the back of the device off! It bothers me to see pointless little lights on every single device I own
-Great for spying on my cat!
Overall this is a great camera. The setup takes a few steps, but it is all laid out clearly in the instructions, it is very simple. I think the camera is priced well for what it offers, being able to view everything from my phone is great. The Wi-Fi range extender is a nice feature, especially since I have it set up on the opposite side of the house from my router. The sound and motion detection can be set up to send you pictures or even video clips to your email when it is activated, which I thought was a very nice feature. Beyond just having the detection, you can set a schedule for when it detects things, for example, I have set it up to only detect motion/sound on Mondays from 7 AM to 12 AM if I felt like it. It is very customizable and pretty straight forward. Beyond that, with the mobile app you can just get notification when either the sound or motion detection is activated. I also really like that it came with everything needed to wall mount it (even the screws). Now I know that the cat seriously just sits on the couch and stares at the door when he is home alone.

Cons: -No night vision. While it works well in low-light, in complete darkness you cannot see anything.
-Cannot be panned/tilted remotely (I imagine that feature would cost a lot more though, so no big deal)
-Comes with a fairly short power cord (4 ft). I was hoping for longer so I could set it up near the ceiling in my living room.
-Also, wish it came with a USB power cable, would be nice if I could power it through one of my many computers instead of having to plug it into the wall
-Would be nice if it had support for batteries as an option for power, to get rid of wires going up the wall.
-Recording can be difficult
I am sure that the power cord issue could be fixed by buying a longer cord, but who wants to do that? I really wish it came with a cord long enough to reach near my ceiling to wall mount it there. The lack of night vision is sad, but seeing as the camera has very good low-light visibility, I don’t have a major issue with it. Doing constant recording with the camera seems very difficult to get set up, though it is possible... but if you are doing that, I image there are much better options, seeing as the main purpose of this camera seems to be more along the lines of watching, and not recording. I learned my cat has dependency issues.

Other Thoughts: I have it set up in the living room during the day so that while I am at work I can watch my kids play occasionally. Then at night it makes a great baby monitor (as long as there is some light in the room). Overall, I think this is an amazing product for the price! It is user friendly, and just has a great set of features. I am just very happy with this product! Caution: seeing what your pets do while you are away from home may be terrifying.

4 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Extremely easy to setup with easy to follow instructions, wall mounts well and can easily be pointed in any direction.

Nice range on wifi connection similar to a mid range router which is very useful for large homes especially with its wifi extending capabilities.

This camera has good picture quality for 480p, a decent microphone & the dlink software functions as should be expected on all OS's.

Good quality in semi low light areas its really perfect as an all in one indoor security/monitoring camera.

Cons: Not really a con but noting that it requires networking (ethernet) for wired connections no USB support, & it must be powered through ac adapter.

The AC adapter is relatively short which is weird considering most people usually mount cameras up high far away from sockets.

Over 50$ of its cost is simply its the fact that its wireless. If you don't know with some searching you'll find sound detection, motion detection, email/text alerts, and the ability to watch live cams on iOS/android are ALL software based things that all can be done with any 5-10$ wired/wireless 480p camera usually for free (see other thoughts note 1).

I looked everywhere specs sheet, manual, box, nothing anywhere about its wifi's max data rate Mbps, kinda weird so if your one who requires a high data rate for some reason, I figured i'd mention it since it is important on some rare occasions, so if connected through this cameras wifi extender you may be somewhat rate limited connecting though this in such heavy network load situations. (see other thoughts note 2)

Other Thoughts: Overall it's great, kinda hard to say its worth its price but it does what it should and is a quick setup with all of its useful functions.

Con Note 1: It does have all of those functions in an all in one easy to setup package, i already had a similar setup with wired usb cams and various free programs.

Con Note 2: Even if it has a lowered data rate than your router its extraordinarily unlikely it will affect anything for any normal home user, very few people (if any) need it any higher especially since 99% of people don't even have more than 30mbps internet in the US and i'm sure this supports over 100mbps at least so it won't affect any regular home user at all.
