Stunning color
- Pros: This is an excellent recorder. It puts out stunning color. It is my first DVDR; I almost bought a competing unit for $50 less but noticed that it did not record a full picture in wide screen; plus, some reviewers reported so much trouble with its copy-block that it rendered the unit useless. Why have a recorder if you can’t record anything? (The reason they are particular about this is they produce DVD movies, and naturally don’t want them to be copied.)
I have used this Panasonic unit for about two weeks and have gotten excellent results (using quality blank DVD+/-Rs and a few Panasonic DVD-RAMs). So far, the only coasters have been the result of cockpit errors. I record mostly on SP (2-hour) format, but had an occasion to use 4-hour and didn’t notice much degradation in resolution, which is better than the best VHS I’ve ever seen. It’s easy to edit out commercials on-the-fly, too.
- Cons: It takes a minute or two for the unit to come up ready to record. It has a fast wake-up mode that I turned off because others reported problems with it. Have a little patience and you will be rewarded.
- Other Thoughts: I highly recommend this unit.
EXCELLENT QUALITY RECORDER
- Pros: Purchased this Panasonic DMR-EA18K DVD unit online after an extensive amount of research to find a unit that just records and plays DVD's (also plays CD's). Have already tackled the conversion of VHS tapes to DVD's and wore out a VHS/DVD Sylvania player/recorder after 4 years. Now we will settle back and just enjoy this Panasonic at an excellent price and excellent quality.
- Cons: The manual is very involved and not being a technical person (72 yr old female), decided to let my "instincts" take over. Had to purchase an HDMI splitter as the our Pioneer TV only had one HDMI connection and needed two since we have Directv Satellite.
- Other Thoughts: Unplugged the Sylvania unit and plugged the Panasonic in the same way and we have a Pioneer TV so the ability for two Panasonics to communicate, did not happen however, did not find that to be any kind of a problem. After connecting and getting everything working, did a lot of "playing" with the remote to find out what I needed to just do what I wanted to do. There are plenty of things to play around with but bells and whistles are not my thing. I want to settle on the "bottom line" and only do what I want to do in the easiest manner, less time and effort and come up with a product that is satisfying my needs - the Panasonic DMR-EA18K DVD Recorder does exactly that.
