Nice sound ..ackward menu & remote
- Pros: Read the cons below first...
once everything is set up properly, it sounded more crisper than the onkyo. No dout. HDMI pass thru can be set to ON even when the unit is switched off. A very good feature.
Firmware upgrade was a savior for me.
Very crisp sound from speakers as well as Woofer.
- Cons: Had an Onkyo S5200 with 7.1 with no TrueHD audio support. Waste of money for a 7.1, wonder why did they need 7.1 with no HD audio support. Anyways, the hdmi port on that low priced Onkyo junk died within 3 weeks. Got this 5.1 as a replacement. This one supports HD audio decoding thru HDMI. But the Menu and the remote are not as easy as Onkyo. Had to upgrade the firmware to support audio port mapping. I have a WDTv HD media player which WILL not output any digital audio thru HDMI but only thru optical port. The original firmware did not support port assignments. New firmware supported that but not very flexible. I can only assign AV3(coax),4(optical) to HDMI3 and 4. And audio 1,2 (both RCA..) to hdmi 1,2, which is a waste. No other options possible. I can't believe Yamaha did this. The cheap junk Onkyo did a better job on the UI.
- Other Thoughts: User manuals can be improved. Stop translating from Japanese.
The UI can be user friendly.
Features and Sound... What more can you ask for?
- Pros: Sounds amazing when set-up correctly. Clean and crisp bass... truly built for the medium sized home theatre expierence. Reciever is about 1" shorter than other models. Front and Center speakers are very impressive for the money... meaning you're getting the same quality you would if you spent 50-75% more. True HD sound... one of the first HTiB to offer this feature and it works flawlessly. The speakers have multiple mounting holes allowing for exetreme flexability in mounting options. 625 watts of clean power at only .09% THD vs. Sony' and Samsung's 1000 watts at 10% THD... quality over quantity EVERYTIME! 100 watt powered subwoofer vs. competor's 50 watt powered subs and 285 watt passive sub... passive subs... really, what's the point? Upgradable; no need to find speakers with the ackward Ohm rating or special connection like Sony or Samsung... upgrade any speaker... anytime!
- Cons: Although the options for inputs are abundant, some buyers may find they need the one connection they need as I did when trying to connect my kid's Wii. The remote is very cheesy... we're talking 1983 RCA style. The size of the rear speakers are ackwardly long (10"), however, sound great. Some lesser brands are offering expandle recievers with their HTiB up to 7.1 channel, such as the new Samsung model releasing later this year. No AC pass through... meaning an extra plug for the subwoofer taking up valuable space on the ever expanding surge protector.
- Other Thoughts: I can't say that this is the best surround sound system I've ever heard, but I can say it's the best HTiB system I've heard. It should be said that it IS the best sound system I've heard costing under $800. I would recomend this system to two types of buyers: The buyer looking for his first home theatre who fears spending over $1000 and matching components, and the buyer disappointed by the $250 system he or she bought from retail chains and fears buying another HTiB. This system is comprised of components that can be bought seperatly which blends the line of HTiB and piecing a system together yourself. For under $800 the price is right, the equipment is supurb, and the technology is current. Save the extra money and purchase of new Harmony remote, you won't regret it.
