3 out of 5 eggsLook for alternatives

Pros: I said I would buy a DVD/Hard Drive unit when the dropped below $300. The model seems to have a lot of features, if you can take the time to learn them. Once the TVGuide info loads into the machine it is a nice feature, however this took over a month. (see other thoughts)

Cons: 1) It took over a month before the TVGuide features were available, the unit uses a lot of the TVGuide features, so learning to use the product was difficult without that feature.

2)The remote and the menus are difficult to get used to, many buttons have simular names or simular functions depending on what menu you are on. At work we used a Panasonic DVD/HD recorder and my co-workers and I thought that machine was difficult, navigating on this unit is a little harder.

3) I couldn't find a way to rename programs that were recorded, it just had the date, time and channel of the recording as the name. A rename function would be great.

Other Thoughts: The TVGuide features are important to this machine. This information comes from TVGuide via the cable company. Making sure this information is working is a very low priority for the cable company, especially when the cable company is being taken over by another cable company. (I worked for the cable company) Unless someone complains it isn't working, chances are they don't know it isn't working.

Without the TVGuide features, using this machine is difficult, with the TVGuide features it is much easier to use.

Perhaps once you get familiar with this product it is a nice product.

I have not used the editing and burn to DVD features of this unit as of this post.

4 out of 5 eggsKind of slow but great product

Pros: This is exactly what I've been looking for for many years. On standard analog cable the setup and customization is very easy. The on-screen Guide is easy to use and personalize. Control menus seem complex at first but soon become second nature. The only thing keeping me from giving 5 eggs is the slow speed of reaction time when using the TV Guide.

Cons: Anoyingly slow response time when using the on-screen TV Guide. You get 8 days of programming to check but it took me 2 minutes to scan ahead 24 hours in the guide. Setting and deleting a recording also has a rather slow response time but it all works as it should (eventually!). The remote is also confusing at first. Many buttons and some in inconvienent places. The little door at the bottom was difficult to open and those buttons are used often so I filed off one of the tabs for the little door at the bottom to make it easier to open. I highly recommend this procedure. This recorder has a steep learing curve (I actually read manual and kept it handy for a couple of weeks) but it starts to make sence after a while. Just make sure that you have pleanty of time and patience when you set up programs to record.

Other Thoughts: Overall a great product. There are a couple of small irritations but I'm happy to have a device that lets me record and easily edit my old videos. BTW a previous review states that he couldn't record a show after he had already started watching it. I've had no problem recording a show that has already started.

4 out of 5 eggsDo some homework first

Pros: Sleek, looking machine. Once you get the TV Guide up & running, you don't need to worry about setting the date or time.

Cons: After getting the recorder set up, I scheduled a test recording. I knew when the machine started recording because the program I was watching turned to snow. The tv/video button was useless. As per Toshiba, because of our satellite connection, we only have one tuner and the tv/video button will not work. This might make sense to someone else, but not to me. On my VCR, all I had to do was press the tv/video button and it worked every time. The remote control is confusing. The buttons make no sense. There's also a little flip door on the bottom that requires some tricky maneuvering with one hand, and surprise, more functions! Lastly, and can't figure it out, once the channels were uploaded through the TV Guide, which is a must otherwise you can't record, the reception was snowy and so were the recordings.

Other Thoughts: I realized that this product was technical but no more than my computer. I do love a challenge! It does require a high learning curve and patience. But I was flabbergasted, that after days of setting up, to find out that this recorder was not going to work well. Bottom line, do some homework, call the manufacturer, talk to them about what kind of set up you currently have and find out if the recorder will work for you.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Machine

Pros: Great DVR, the picture quality is excellent. The TV Guide funtion is great.

Cons: Not really a con but it works like a computer so it take time to move from screen to screen.

Other Thoughts: Great buy, great price and fast shipping as always

5 out of 5 eggsI love this machine!

Pros: True, I've only had it 4 days so far and haven't tried out every function yet, but I love this thing. It does everything I hoped it would do and more! Recording quality is great. My old DVD player would not play anything I burned myself, no matter what brand of discs I used. This not only plays everything I tried, a disc I burned on this actually plays flawlessly on my old player! Once you get the hang of it, it is easy to edit out commercials, create chapter names and thumbnails, which makes for a great DVD or playlist for hard disk viewing.

Cons: Yes, the remote is awkward to use, but eventually you figure it out. I really don't care for the little door that opens at the bottom to access more buttons - I just know that thing will break off some day. There is a high learning curve with this machine (if you want to do more than the most basic of functions). Do NOT get it if you can't program a VCR on your own! The TV Guide On Screen listing feature is great (beats having to pay for a Tivo subscription to get the same thing!), but initially has all the channels out of order - that can be changed, but takes time. And so far, not all the listings for the next 8 days are showing up as promised - but this is not a fault of the Toshiba recorder. I had to do some research on the TV Guide On Screen site to find out some shortcuts for using the TV Guide feature - if they were mentioned in the extensive owner's manual, I never saw them.

Other Thoughts: My experience with Newegg was great - easy to use website, easy to find exactly what I wanted and at a great price! They kept me informed via e-mails every step of the way, and the item was delivered in 3 days as promised (I ordered on a Sunday night; it was here Wed. at noon).

3 out of 5 eggsDesign and functionality

Comments: I didnt liked the design of the control remote. There are too many buttons and no logical order regarding their location in the controller. In addition, the device takes too much time to respond to certain commands. Its response time is not very admirable. Also, you will not be able to record all the stuff you see in the TV. If a you are watching a movie and you cannot see it completely because you have to leave, you cannot record it to see it later (and the delete it after). The program enforces that you cannot record copy protected transmitions which in my opinion, that is the user's decision of whether he wants to do that for its onw personal usage (obviously not for selling purposes) or not.
