The HV-670 eliminates the hassle of watching downloaded video only on a PC or having to burn to optical disc first. You could watch the downloaded contents on the small screen of your PC, or you could painstakingly wait to burn your desired video to a DVD and then play back using a DVD player.
Now, you can record directly to the hard disk off the cable or satellite (or, heaven, an antenna) and then burn that to your DVD if you feel the need. All in one neat box, LASONiC helps to ease the transition between cable box, computer and couch.

Good idea - poor execution
- Pros: A good concept poorly executed. I had one unit that did what it was supposed to do which was play almost any format of video off of the HDD - but that unit had issues with keeping the video synched to the TV: Newegg replaced it.
The second unit came and played great video, but within a week the HDD started to make a grinding noise. Thanks to Newegg for taking the return.
- Cons: Two bad units in a row (with two different issues) really disappointed me. In general, the idea was good, but poorly executed.
- Other Thoughts: This concept needs to go a little further and support w-lan and needs more flexibility in the user interface.
Excelent compatibility, Unbeatable price.
- Pros: Plays anything!
- Cons: Manual doesnt mention this but there is a protective film over the player face to protect it from scratches durring shipment. Peal that sucker off or you'll have a real hard time with Remote control reception.
- Other Thoughts: This is a bare bone GUI. Instead of supporting playlists, they decided to display criteria by change date (ie, First in = Top of Playlist). As long as you remember this, its an awsome player that will play all those XViD/DiVX movies you've ripped/aquired over the years. The price is so tempting, its worth buying if all you wanted was the external hard disk!

Good Unit
- Pros: The Player works just as advertised. Pop out the HD plug it up via usb to your PC copy your videos to the HD. Pop it back in the player, and your off. It every .avi I've thrown at it.
- Cons: The GUI isn't much to look at. It also has issues with the way it sorts the file name. This isnt too much of a problem if break things up into folders.
The Unit does get noisy, the fan in the back kicks into high geer when using the HD.
- Other Thoughts: The player works fine, but it just feels cheap.
if your looking for a 2nd HD check out inoi.com they sell the same player, and they also sell the enclosures, so you can use your own HD.
One Final Note: when Newegg shipped the player they shipped it with no extra padding other than the simple box that it comes in. I feel very luck that I got the player on piece. Come on Newegg spend the money on some styrofoam peanuts or something to keep my stuff from getting banged up.
Terrible... stay away
- Pros: Good idea. I was excited to find this product, and reasonably priced.
- Cons: Where to start... When I received my first unit, the flimsy front panel had cracked off, the hdd latch was broken, and the front of the unit was cracked. So I returned it. I got another unit, but was out of town when it arrived, and so I didn't have a chance to open it up until after the 30-day warranty. Opened this one up, and it looked fine. Plays DVDs just fine, and I can hook up the hdd to my computer and put files on it, etc... but when I plug it into the dvd player, it simply says "no disk". Apparently it can't detect the drive... no matter how I partition or format the thing. So basically I have an overpriced dvd player and an external harddrive that it can't use. I called Lasonic, but whoever answered told me that their tech support was "On Lunch". My conclusion: wait till a better company makes a better version.
Awesome DVD Player!
- Pros: If this dvd player had blueray and hd-dvd capabilities, it would quite possibly be the best dvd player in the world! I recommend this DVD player to anybody who knows enough about avi files.
- Cons: Sometimes videos can get out of sync, i think thats due to the codecs in the dvd player, this dvd player's firmware is upgradeable but i think lasonic forgot all about this dvd player that they just don't care about it anymore.
Don't try buying a bigger sized hard drive, it appears that the dvd player is specific on what hard drive it will read from though i plan to still work on it more to see if i can get my 500 gb IDE hd to work in it, but no luck so far. I think it is really STUPID of lasonic to not allow us to upgrade the hard drive.
- Other Thoughts: It could of been made better, and the hard drive should definantly be upgradeable. Lasonic needs to get off their *** and make a new firmware for this (New Codecs, Ability to use 500 GB Hard Drives, etc.)
I was planning on buying 2 more of these, but since it seems unsupported why should i bother.
