Get incredible detail with Panasonic's 1080p VIERA 42” Plasma HDTV. The native 20,000:1 and dynamic 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio deliver an exceptionally crisp image. 3D color management and x.v.Color deliver colors equally as bright. Lovely TV, questionable service
- Pros: 1080p clarity is breathtaking, screen isn't glossy so reflections aren't an issue, colors are gorgeous, menus are very clear. I also own a Hitachi 55" 720p and as for clarity, this is so much nicer. The 42" is perfect for a medium sized bedroom wall. I've never seen a more detailed TV in 42"--it looks like a large computer LCD in terms of clarity.
- Cons: If have your face 6" from the screen you will notice images that were previously in the screen, when the screen is black. I'm not calling it burn in, because the images don't stay forever, and in all colors. It is only noticeable on black, and only if you are very close. If you are sitting 4-5 feet away you won't see it. If there is color on the screen or flowing video you'll never see it. So, it's really a small con because well you can't see it unless you are far far too close.
- Other Thoughts: I suppose another HDMI on the back of the TV would be nice. I currently run a PS3, xbox360, and cable box all on HDMI. This is an issue though since there is only two plugs on the back and one in the front (which I use sometimes for a computer hook up.) So, I have resorted to using composite for the cable box since it only does 720p anyway and HDMI for the 360/ps3. And a final thought, BLURAY LOOKS AMAZING!
Little Down
- Pros: Great TV, good price.
- Cons: If you get the TH42PZ85U you get a better TV for the same price.
- Other Thoughts: Placed the order, tried to change it to the 85U within the hour of placing it and NewEgg says no I cannot make any changes. Three days later it still hasn't even shipped.

Amazing tuner
- Pros: Very sharp pictures. I cheaped out and didnt get the higher contrast one, but this one still looks really good. Maybe the other one would be better. The tuner is amazing. I plugged in cable and set to scan. The scan took maybe 15 mins, but picked up a zillion channels! I have an older viera that couldn't get half as many channels. Can't say much on the audio, since i don't really care too much about it.
- Cons: Wish it was bigger. This was the best deal i could find on plasmas. I know there are other brands that go for less, but i wanted to go with an established brand. I've also seen 46" LCD's go for less, but was concerned with viewing angle and if the black color was dark enough.
- Other Thoughts: ATI delivery went smoothly. They brought it to my front door steps and showed me how to unbox it. They even waited while i opened it to make sure there was no damamges. Not that it helps, since ATI does not warrenty the item if damaged, even during delivery. I was tempted to pay the extra bit for white glove service, since they plug it in and confirm the item works. Luckily there were no issues.
It really helped to have someone with me to carry it up my stairs and unpack it. It's not heavy at all, but the box is pretty big.
Someone from ATI called me 2 days before the scheduled delivery to confirm and then to ask if i wanted it a day early. Overall, it worked out very nicely.
Panasonic is Best Of Breed, Fries is cheaper
- Pros: Panasonic has top image quality and it's 720p looks like alot of other 1080p's. This 1080p is better than all except Pioneer.
- Cons: You can get this same exact model at Fries in Sacramento for $850 as of today Jan 28
The Love of my Life...
- Pros: Absolutely stunning picture that only gets better when calibrated(although the vivid setting can be near blinding). Blu-ray and games are just like being there, and the black and color ratios leave absolutely nothing to be desires. Also, when put on the "cinema" setting and tweaking the brightness a little, the temperature on this baby is near perfect. Has anyone mentioned the fact that it also has an SD card slot for easy digital camera viewing...Enough said!
- Cons: In reference to some other posts, it is indeed a disappointment that Component cables will only output 720p. However, this is not a drawback or con of the Panasonic brand, but merely the limitations of Component bandwidth. If you want full HD audio and video you have to use HDMI. Also, if you have any direct sunlight on the screen it will inhibit viewing, but this is true of every TV in history(including lcd).
- Other Thoughts: Unfortunately for the Egg, I work in Home Theater at a popular retail store...so I was all but forced to buy it through them rather than this glorious site. Having said that, this is by far the best television I have ever owned. If it weren't for the fact that I've had my girlfriend longer than this set, and the fact that she was ALL FOR buying it, this TV and I would be married by now. P.S. As mentioned many times, for those of you in need of a VGA slot, the pz85u meets your needs in a slightly better set. Panasonic and Newegg Rule!
