Supporting the next-generation Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors, the GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 motherboard delivers high performance and a complete arsenal of great tuning tools for DIY and power users to customize system performance to incredible heights. This platform is specifically designed for enhanced system durability and boosted system stability under the most extreme conditions. Filling the mainstream segment for the new chipset, this board sports a highly-overclockable configuration.
Following their new S-series motherboard lineup, Gigabyte actually has two versions of the board, which you can identify by its naming suffix. There is the regular 'S3' and this Durability Enhanced 'DS3' model that is in all essence exactly the same board except that it sports the new All-Solid Capacitor design. This exquisite motherboard utilizes the latest Intel P965 chipset to deliver up to 8 GB dual-channel DDR2 800/667/533 memory with Fast Memory Access technology for maximum platform performance. Other features include 6 SATA 3Gb/s connectors, 8-channel onboard HD Audio and PCIe Gigabit LAN support.

Great Board
- Pros: Received a Revision 3.3
The issues surrounding D9 memory chips are gone. No boot problems. Running an e6600 at stock voltage at 3.2 GHz The board cmae with BIOS rev F9. I did flash to the new F10.
- Cons: The CMOS reset pegs doesn't come with a jumper block, also if you have a large video card the jumper is blocked by it. slight pain.
- Other Thoughts: to OC this board easily:
Here is an example using a e6600 CPU. With DDR2 800 memory at 5,5,5,15
Make sure these 6 things are DISABLED in Bios
- CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) - CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2) - CPU EIST Function -No-execute memory protect -Limit CPUID Max to 3 -Virtualization Technology
- Set Voltage Control set to manual. - bump Vcore to 1.4 < if needed
- Set Clock Multipler to 8 down from 9 - Set CPU Host Clock Control to Enabled - Set CPU Host Frequency (MHz) to 400 - Set PCI Express Frequency(MHz) to 100 - Set System Memory Multiplier to 2.00 - Set DRAM Timing Selectable to Manual - Set CAS Latency Time to 5 - Set DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay to 5 - Set DRAM RAS# Precharge to 5 - Set Precharge dealy (tRAS) to 15
The CPU then boots at a very nice 3.2 GHz
Great MB, not ideal for NCQ or RAID
- Pros: Solid state capacitor only way to go.. High quality MB at a good price with good layout. Supports the Core2duo- good tech support.
- Cons: RAID and AHCI are only offered on 2 of the 6 SATA ports and use the JMicron Chip which requires a separate driver during OS installation. The OS will not recognize the drives using the Jmicron chip in Raid or AHIC mode without the third party driver installed, which renders most backup and disk image programs useless, including Gigabyte’s own recovery program.
- Other Thoughts: Warning: Flash the BIOS to newest version before you do anything and DO NOT let Windows Update install the new JMicron/Gigabyte driver – you will lose your CD/DVD drives with no way to recover except re-install Windows.
If you are building a new system and you want to use RAID or AHCI, I would suggest you consider a MB based on the Intel ICH8R chipset. This MB uses the cheaper ICH8 which does not support RAID or AHCI. While you may not be interested in RAID, you probably are interested in AHCI. This is the new protocol that allows NCQ and other advanced features that are being built into the newest SATA II hard drives. This MB will not support NCQ, RAID, AHCI, except on the 2 JMicron SATA ports and only then with the addition of a third party driver. With most new SATA II HDs now supporting NCQ, this renders the other 4 SATA port pretty much useless unless you want to use your new NCQ drives in IDE emulated mode.

Nice!!!!!! Stable Board
- Pros: Bought this board in Sept and has been running rock stable ever since. Put a Q6600 2.4 ghz GO stepping processor and 2 gig of Crucial Balistix Tracer DDRII 1000 mhz Memory ON Board. (Note The SPD Chip on the memory is programmed as DDRII 800) Which is why that memory worked. Voltage rating 1.7 to 2.2 volts. Since the lower voltage rating met the 1.8 volt minimum it worked fine and the motherboard auto set the voltage at 1.9. Has been running rock solid.
- Cons: The Express recovery Program (for backing up the hard drive) will only work on the Native SATA drivers and not the AHCI. Gigabyte neeeds to update this this program. And the manual mentions this limitation.
Not a con but for the giggles I did overclock this to 3.2 ghz with the memory running the 1000 and it was stable. however I put it back to normal because at stock it screams so I figure why push it now. Maybe in the future when the software grows to 10 gig a program but I think this machine will last her a for a few years. However nice to know the power is there if we need it.
- Other Thoughts: This Motherboard, Q6600 Quad Processor, 2 gig Crucial DDRII 1000 mhz memory, Vista Home Premium, Seagate 320 gig 7200.10 Hard drive, Audigy2 ZS Sound Card, Evga 7600GT Superclocked video card, Sabrient Card Reader, Samsung 20X Dual layer DVD burner and My Wife is Loving her new toy.
works like a charm
- Pros: great for video editing with ATI 1950 video card added
- Cons: none
Great, Solid MOBO for the price
- Pros: Amazing stability and OC abilities/options.
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: I have my 6600 OC'd to 3.4 stable but had it to 3.6 with little issues.
