2 out of 5 eggsThere are better boards for Linux

Pros: Having onboard video, LAN, and sound in one package is nice for a small server solution.

Cons: Got a kernel panic when attempting to install Red Hat EL 5 on the M2N-MX. After some research, discovered that I needed to pass a parameter to the kernel to disable the board's jacked-up APIC functions. This gets Linux installed. I then discover that there is a problem with how the board is reporting memory mapped PCI devices to the kernel. Evidently this is causing random lockups on some installations, so I disable this "feature" with another kernel boot parameter. Then I notice that the onboard nVidia MCP61 ethernet controller is reporting a different MAC address everytime the system boots, which basically junks my network configuration and forces the use of default values. There is some discussion about the latest driver release from nVidia correcting this issue, but with all the other stop-gaps I'm having to employ (and there ARE more), I haven't had time to try this yet. The manual is also just plain wrong in several places, explaining BIOS featues that don't exist, etc.

Other Thoughts: There are better boards for Linux. Although this particular Asus board gets good reviews here, my experience has been disappointing. I will look at other brands for my next Linux box.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid board!

Pros: As said in the title, it's a solid board. In the past 6 months, I've built many PCs using these for my clients and I've not had any fail yet. These PCs are normally running with Athlon 64-X2 4400+ and 1GB RAM. They will also normally have WinXP Pro and/or Ubuntu. Using the on-board video is fine for the web pages and office apps these people run. It will even allow you to run Ubuntu 7.04 with "DESKTOP EFFECTS" on. I highly recommend this board...

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Most XP OEM disks need you to supply SATA drivers for the install. I have a custom multi-boot DVD which has the drivers slipstreamed so I'm fine. This is no different from many other boards so that's why it's not listed under "CONS."

5 out of 5 eggsCheap Setup Works flawlessly

Pros: Ran this rig with a cheap setup I made for a friend, 2 gig corsair twin c4 ram, AMD 5200+, and thermaltake PSU. Everything went together great and works flawlessly. This machine performed so well I might start looking into budget machines for myself next go around.

Cons: No cons. Everything fit great and worked well

Other Thoughts: Drivers for both XP and Vista were supplied. I opted to run XP and wait on the vista upgrade for SP1. It's nice to know the drivers are available for when I take the jump. Can't miss with this board. As always can't miss with newegg!

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Don't buy this board to use with Linux 2.6.x kernel, it has a stupid bios!!! Works fine with WinXP.

Cons: This board will not work right with linux 2.6.21+ kernels and a duel core cpu. I tried it with slack12, ubuntu-7.04.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Reliability

Pros: This board is very stable in my experience, especially compared to the less expensive alternative SE board. It is working for me in a restaurant as a server for a PointOfSales and in a home computer. Works great.

Cons: none really. younger folks just shouldn't expect to be playing modern games at 100fps with the onboard video, but good board/chipset/features combo.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Fine For Me

Pros: Everything works fine for me on Linux Fedora Core 6. Even booted the board off a "bootable" USB pin drive to update the BIOS.

Cons: Floppy connector is buried at the back of the board (back of the case). Fortunately I don't need the floppy. Onboard video only reaches 800x600 in linux, but good enough for my application.

Other Thoughts: Athlon64 3500+, 2G Kingston DDR2 667 RAM, Antec 400W SmartPower ATX power supply.
