Beware the 4GB RAM Limit
- Pros: Cheap and had exactly the features (almost, see "Cons") that I was looking for. Integrated video, PATA and SATA connections, microATX form factor, 4 rear panel usb 2.0 ports and a rear panel firewire port. BIOS is easy to update and I've never had any problems with it except...
- Cons: ...the integrated audio caused all kinds of problems when I installed an external audio interface (M-Audio FastTrack Pro). Odd sounds, computer restarting, etc. Disabling it worked for me, but if you're relying on the onboard sound card, it may be something to worry about.
The other BIG issue is the misleading claim of supporting 4GB RAM. It's been discussed by others, but it needs to be reiterated. I'll have to buy another board in a year or so because I'm basically wasting some of the RAM that I bought for this one. Put 2GB RAM in, you get 2 GB RAM. Put 4GB in and you get less than 4GB (3.1 GB for me). The only explanation that I've ever gotten is that when 4GB is installed, the board decides that it now needs some of that RAM. Why doesn't it "need" it when less RAM is installed? I'm no expert but that's ridiculous.
And reiterating: this is not an OS issue, it is the board.
And I've still never gotten a satisfactory explanation as to why
Great for the money!
- Pros: Great motherboard for the price. I bought it to make a video-editing desktop and it's been doing a great job for over 2 years!
- Cons: BIOS update was a little tricky, perhaps because it was my first time dealing with this, but otherwise no problem installing & getting running with it.
* BIOS update wasn't totally necessary, btw.

Introduction
The ASUS P5L-VM is one of the best all-in-one solutions for an Intel945G-based system. This Micro ATX motherboard is ready for Intel's Dual Core 1066 MHz FSB processors. Its 4GB max capacity for Dual channel DDR2 667 memory give you improved gaming performance and reduced loading times. The CrashFree BIOS 2 feature includes a simplified BIOS auto-recovery function in a support CD, which can be used to reboot the system in the absence of a bootable disk. Additionally, the EZ Flash 2 lets you update BIOS from a USB flash drive without entering the OS.
The on-board Realtek ALC883 HD-audio Codec delivers clear and precise 6-channel sound, and the on-board Attansic PCIe Gigabit LAN Controller ensures steady and reliable connectivity. The on-board PCI-E X16 slot adds room for a PCI-E graphic card to your system. The three expansion slots (1 x PCI-E X1 + 2 x PCI) and five ATA connectors (4 x SATA + 1 x PATA) ensure that this micro-board packs a mega punch.
