2 out of 5 eggsjunk

Pros: utilizes ddr3, lots of options, looks cool, water ready, supports crossfireX

Cons: locks up a lot, doesn't like several different kinds of ram, once it shuts off it wont let you turn it back on for about an hour, lots of other problems(see asus forums)

Other Thoughts: i bought two of these because i was going to build two pc's. same problems with both boards. i've tried swapping out everything but the processor(which is fairly new), so it's definitely the board.

I'm definitely contacting ASUS and trying to get a different board that supports crossfireX

5 out of 5 eggsCooling setup

Pros: Good board. Had some issues with corrupt data if you don't hook up water cooling to Fusion block

Cons: Get rid of the plastic couplers for tubing, especially the 1/2 to 3/8 reducers. They fall apart after a few days. Get nylon reducers at ACE or Home Depot, get decent hose clamps and you won't have any leaks.

Other Thoughts: Using Swiftech cooling system. Runs cool and very quiet with this board and temp sensors let you choose where to monitor. LCD probe is worthless.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Motherboard!

Pros: Overclocks nicely, looks great, cools well, compatible with most of the latest hardware, has plenty of ports, and it came with accessories that make the product even more appealing.

Cons: It's a bit large, but since its dimensions are clearly provided, that's not an issue.

Other Thoughts: I've since bought another and had no regrets. Newegg's service was excellent- you're never disappointed there- Asus produces another winner, and UPS ships a day early. Who says you can't have it all?

1 out of 5 eggsOh heck no

Pros: At first blush, love. The power, the speed YUM. I use it on sat maps, ground and soil surveys. Intense stuff. Also whack the heck out of gaming at night after work. The bomb!

Cons: The HONEYMOONS over. Last ASUS board ever. Computer has been down a month now. Maximus Extreme pain. Been to the repair shop twice and MB has seen it's home(ASUS) going on twice. Asus has trouble with the notorious cpu-int. Can't find the drives and the bios is whacky. Using a laptop now and hearts don't cut it. Called today to get a new board(like they say in the advertisement), but they are closed for some special holiday. The customer service isn't there, they don't know what to do, just keep calling. Thats what we were told. I have ordered a new board from . I know there are problems with every brand but pick the one who stands behind their product. ASUS dropped me.

Other Thoughts: I like building my own computers, is it ever a learning process. Who has the money to buy one and see if it works, not me. Customer service is everything.

2 out of 5 eggswhat happened to asus

Pros: Asus

Cons: This mobo has all kinds of flashy lights and says it is so oc able, but I cannot get it to oc and run stable.

I always buy OCZ ram and have never had a problem, but this time I purcahsed the best ram and have had nothing but problems with this mobo. The mobo says it handels it but I cant get it to run stable on it.
Location of the ide and the sata connectors didn't work on my case.
Have higheset updated bios and can not find option to put in my own north bridge and ram voltage. When I try and do it in the AI overclocker it freezes.

Other Thoughts: Very upset with this. I cannot believe it came from Asus. I ahve purcahsed so many mobo from them and never had a doa or a minor problem till I buy the best of the best.

1 out of 5 eggsKeep looking...

Pros: Attractive and colorful, with high tech features.

Cons: All that glitters is not gold! Two different mobos did not work out of the box - they simply would not boot.

Other Thoughts: I bought this mobo with a Q9400 processor. It would not boot. Nothing on Asus' website gave any clues. Call to Asus tech support was frustrating due to agonizingly long wait times. After about an hour on hold, and another hour of troubleshooting incl. BIOS upgrade, Asus tech support decided that my video card (also an Asus product!) was the real problem. Flaky products, poor tech support... why put up with this?

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome MB

Pros: At first impression, the reviews for this MB were very mixed and I was skepticle to purchase. But after reading many hardware reviews, I decided to buy it and this MB is rock solid and has many options for the enthusiast PC builder.

Plenty of options for every component in the BIOS - from extremely tiny incremental voltages for your RAM, CPU, etc. to RAM clock timings, this MB has it all. Definitely not for the beginner due to the complex options available. Design is rock-solid and expected from ASUS.

Even has options for water cooling the Northbridge. This MB is part of the ROG (republic of gamers) series motherboards, so it's built for gamers and enthusiasts. Plenty of overclocking options, and solid stability if you overclock it right.

Comes with all the right drivers, supports Vista 64-bit edition, STALKER game, cool LED indicators for the level of overclocking you do, SupremeFX sound card lights up in blue, power switch & reset on the MB, CMOS reset switch on back of I/O.

Cons: Price. Definitely not a cheap motherboard, but you get what you pay for.

If you're looking for SLi or some of the other nVidia NB/SB chipsets, then you might want to consider some of the other ASUS motherboards. This one has the Intel X38 chipset, which is perfectly fine, and supports 1600MHz FSB if you overclock it.

Also, NB/SB chipsets run a little warm. It's showing up around 116F (46C) on PC Probe.

Other than that, not too many cons about his MB. I would recommend it.

Other Thoughts: For the users who are having big issues, I would update the BIOS to the latest build, and make sure the hardware is compatible with the motherboard. Don't cheap out on no-name brands from memory or video cards - that will just give you more headache.

One thing I ran into was the memory timing issue on Corsair 1333MHz RAM that I had. The box says it's rated for 9-9-9-24 timings, but if you try that, you will get blue screens of death like I did. I took the advice of another guy who had the same issue a few posts down and it worked. Set the RAM timings to 7-7-7-24, 2T, and you should have no issues.

My Build:
Thermaltake Armor+ VH6000BWS, Asus Maximus Extreme MB, XFX GeForce 9800 GTX Black Edition, Thermaltake 850W Toughpower PSU, Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5GHz CPU, Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM (Dual-Channel 2x2GB), WD VelociRaptor 10K RPM SATA 3.0GB/s 300GB HD, Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP1

5 out of 5 eggsExtreme Gaming MB

Pros: First I wanted to say do your research, make sure you understand the capabilities and compatibilities of the Memory, CPU, Hard Drives and Video cards. I spent 6 months researching every component I was going to use in my build before I clicked the purchase button. So I knew exactly what I was getting when I selected the MB over all others. As far as X38 MB's this I have to say is a top shelf enthusiast MB build for those who like to tinker and tweak things to get the max output, a real Overclockers dream MB. It has everything I wanted with CPU compatibility and the ability to water cool the Northbridge with it's fusion block. This MB is beautiful once you get it up and going. Nice led's to indicate voltage for CPU, Memory and FSB. The onboard reset and power are illuminated well. The rear illuminate panel is an excellent addition in dark settings and the rear clear CMOS works great if you get to crazy. The addition of the LCD poster is awesome for diagnosing boot issues.

Cons: No Con's so I will add more PRO's - The 3d illuminated Republic of Gamers is a nice added touch. I have this MB in a Thermatake Armor+ and there is plenty of room between the tray and 5.25 hard drive cage's. I installed 2 VisionTek HD4870's in crossfire and although they are close the is still room for airflow. I also installed 2 Western Digital VelociRaptor's in Raid0 and 1 Seagate 320GB Hard Drive for a backup drive. All are cooled with the MASSCOOL SYTRIN Kuformula SHF1 Ultra HDD Cooler. WOW they Look beautiful with the blue HD cooling fans. I also installed 1 ASUS 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Model DRW-2014L1T. All were detected on first boot and work perfectly. I used the Mushkin XP 4GB ASCENT w/ eVCI technology 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Memory with 7-7-6-18 1T timings at 1.85 - 1.95V in the A2 - B2 rear slots with a CORSAIR CMXAF1 Memory Fans - SWEET! This memory has XMP profiles a must for a XMP certified MB. The CPU is a

Other Thoughts: Wolfdale E8500 O'clocked 20% at 3.8 MHZ on 1600MHZ FSB. Awesomely stable. For the CPU cooling I used the ZALMAN Reserator XT linked with the Northbridge Fusion block. CPU is a cool 40c idle and around 45 under load. Evertime I boot this bad boy up I'm awestruck. I thought I should also mention I did a BIO's upgrade with the new 1102 revision prior to making any BIO's settings. It shipped with Ver 905 BIO's and detected the E8500 CPU without issue. Next like so many other have posted get it off the auto settings setting the memory voltage and timings right after 1st boot from the BIO's flash. I was able on my first attempt to set it up with a 9.5 Multi x 400, 400 FSB Strap, running 1:2 with 1600MHZ memory. So far I have not found any game that can slow this monster down.

1 out of 5 eggsawful.

Pros: It looks pretty. The LCD poster goes through a nifty port in the rear shield to give you your CPU INIT errors without causing you the trouble of peeking into the case.

Cons: The first one of these boards I got was DOA, then the replacement was DOA. The manual has b&w pictures and horrible engrish. The slots are all like 1mm or so off so that nothing goes through the holes in the back of my case the way it is supposed to. The MOSFET fan blows (not the way you'd want it to) and the utter excess of heatsinks on the board makes me wonder if i could've recycled it for more than I paid. The NB water block comes with (check this) a couple small sections (1 inch to 1 and 1/4 inch) of clear hose, cheap plastic fittings and SHARP METAL HOSE CLAMPS!!! HOSE CLAMPS, I TELL YOU!!! WHO USES CLAMPS ON A PC?

Other Thoughts: This is an awful waste of time and money. Don't even buy it. Get an X48 - and not from Asus.
