An important tip from one of our users: don't just check total power output, find out what you need in the way of current on each power rail. If you need 20 A on your +12V rails and the supply only has 15A, it doesn't matter how many watts the supply puts out: don't buy it. Make certain that you have ENOUGH rails, too: sometimes, you need more than just two +12V rails for your setup.

Replacing an existing power supply is easier: just get a replacement that meets or exceeds the specifications of the old one. (You can usually find those printed on the side of the supply.)

That said, here's a power supply that is compatible with most ATX format motherboards, puts out 600 watts of power (see specifications for exact distribution). Could this be your next power supply?

5 out of 5 eggsGreat all around performance

Pros: Works great, powers my 8800GT and e8400 with room to spare.

Cons: none, wish i had bought it from newegg.

Other Thoughts: Works great, better than any power supply I have owned. Prior to buying this one, i bought a 650 watt el cheapo power supply from some random company. Not doing that again! After about a half hour of playing most wanted, crazy colors started appearing on my screen. Replaced it pronto with this one. Dont ever skimp on the power supply, make sure to buy one that is reliable and come from a brand name like thermaltake, corsair, antec, ppc, or others.

4 out of 5 eggsdecent, but...

Pros: Quiet. Nice design. Plenty of connectors.

Cons: Buzzing while playing games...

Other Thoughts: ... with my new GTX260 video card. Replaced a 8800GTS (which was moved to my HTPC, replacing a 8600) that caused no such issues. I've since read opinions that a high load on some PSU's can cause a buzzing, so I guess I'll get a bigger PSU. This is still a good unit, I'll just move it to the HTPC instead.

5 out of 5 eggsStill Rockin!!!!!

Pros: Had this puppy for almost 2 years now and just completed a system overhaul still using this and it rose to the occasion like a champ.

Cons: None seen yet.

Other Thoughts: As far as the complaints about the 12v rails it clearly states that you got 36amps.
My rig:
EVGA 113-M2-E11 GeForce 8200 motherboard
AMD X2 6000+
3gb Kingston DDR2 800 ValueRam
EVGA 9800GT

Samsung Combo Drive
Purepower 600W
3 aftermarket fans

All of that in an Ultra mid case

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Have this hooked up to a 8800GT/3x HDD/2x DVD/Blu-ray and have had no issues so far after buying this in January 2008. Bought it at a local comp store (sorry Newegg, I was in a pinch). Not sure how it would do with any of the newer generation cards though.

Cons: none that I can see

Other Thoughts: One thing you never want to skim on and that is a good PSU. I have had 3 PSU die on me and take the motherboards/cpu's with it so I know from experience. Thermaltakes have never failed me in all the time I have used them.

5 out of 5 eggsStill Going

Pros: Killer PS for a fair price. I've had it in two gaming builds now and have abused it for a year and a half now.

Cons: First one died in six months and was real loud. Just a fluke though.

Other Thoughts: This is my second one and it's solid. Never had an issue with it, it's quiet and has survived more gaming than I'd like to admit. It's been running since the end of April 2007.

1 out of 5 eggsLow voltage fresh from the box

Pros: Looks nice. Thought Thermaltake was a good name

Cons: Low voltage fresh from the box - must not have checked it at the factory. Tested before installation and found 4.4 volts on 5 volt rail with no load! Other readings were 12.1 and 3.3 volts.

Other Thoughts: Very disappointed. This was my first Thermaltake and I was expecting good quality control. I just got the RMA, so I guess my rebuild will take an extra week or so.

5 out of 5 eggsGood lookin' power pumpin'

Pros: - Does what it's supposed to, and does it well. Getting 12.10, 5.16, 3.31, 1.02 on the rails at the moment.
- Designed well. Cables wrapped in black mesh. Connectors have a grip design which actually makes a difference while tugging on a stuck molex. Black color scheme is sexier than beige.

Cons: - Periodically this psu emits a quiet buzzing sound for maybe 10 minutes, then stops. Doesn't really bother me though, it's pretty quiet.
