ICON Loading...

The surpisingly powerful AMD Opteron 180 Dual-core processor provides a highly scalable architecture that delivers next-generation performance nearly as well as its Athlon cousin, and a flexible upgrade path from 32- to 64-bit computing for any workstation and server platform and is a dramatic leap forward in compatibility, performance, investment protection and reduced total cost of ownership (TCO).

Opterons are intended for servers and workstations, which do serious business all-day long in enterprise-class environments where they are creating synergies and leveraging vertical integration in a proactive manner. These are buttoned-down CPUs.

This talented processor operates at 2.4GHz with 2 x 1MB (2MB total) L2 Cache for significantly enhanced overall system performance and incredible efficiency in complex computing environments such as CAD, graphics and scientific workstation platforms or high-end gaming desktop systems. This is a fine addition for your processing-intense operations.

  • newegg AMD64 Dual-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With dual-core technology there are two complete processor cores in one physical package running at the same frequency to deliver TRUE multi-tasking power, allowing users to switch from one program to another without pausing for the computer to catch up and reducing annoying processing pauses.
  • newegg Integrated DDR DRAM Memory Controller The AMD Opteron 180 Dual-core processor is integrated with a DDR DRAM memory controller capable of supporting ECC DRAM. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies, and enhanced processor performance. Usage of DDR400/PC3200 memory will provide the processor with up to 6.4GB/s memory bandwidth.
  • newegg HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT technology the AMD Opteron 180 Dual-core processor enjoys 1000MHz system bus speeds.
  • newegg Enhanced Virus Protection All AMD processors equipped with AMD64 technology are Enhanced Virus Protection-enabled. Enhanced virus protection acts as a preventative measure causing viruses to be localized, short-lived, and non-contagious, eventually being flushed from system memory.

5 out of 5 eggsOpty 180

Pros: Multi-tasker's dream come true. No more stuttering videos while surfing the web.

Cons: Have to buy used.

Other Thoughts: Now longer for sale but still a practical cpu.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Opteron !

Pros: Doesn't matter what you throw at this thing it just wont slow down!! Doesn't run too hot either , runs on average 94 degrees
at idle 104 at full load with Thermaltake Bigwater 745 and an Aquarius II vga block . Will probably run cooler when I switch it to A Koolance system, but not bad overall !

Cons: Cons whats that ?

Other Thoughts: Be sure to configure your ram properly !
Also AMD cpu's don't show as four cores in Task manager like an Intel dual core because Intel's Hyper Threaded cpu's show up as two physical and two virtual cores therefore you see four in Task manager .
AMD's Hyper Transport is completely different technology giving you faster access to the ram , therefore you will only see two core's in Task manager , but thats normal and better in some ways !

5 out of 5 eggsVery Good Socket 939 Upgrade Solution

Pros: Chose the Opteron 180 over the x2 4800+ mainly due to price vs performance. The 180 has three Hyper Transport links vs the 4800+'s one - which the 180 much faster especially when multitasking. I have mine slightly overclocked to 250.2ghz and it runs at 85f in a 70f room using the supplied AMD heatsink/fan combo-eh!!

Cons: None so far - all is good and fast-eh

Other Thoughts: Since I cannot outrun the Opteron 180 in the ways that I use my computers - I will stay with this configuration for the next several years-eh

5 out of 5 eggsHappy

Pros: Great performance, now I can actually run a movie on one screen and play a video game on the second without the movie sputtering like it did with my old processor.

Cons: I had to RMA the first processor, since it was DOA. The second processor has been running flawlessly, with the stock fan. Price could be better.

Other Thoughts: It's a little pricey compared to AM2 socket proccessors of the same performance.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Happy

Pros: Very fast. Plug and play with my Sun Ultra 20 system. Comes with everything you need (fan, heatsink, compound). Did I mention very fast?

Cons: None so far. It's hard to find a 939 MB these days, but if you have one already, this is a great CPU for it.

5 out of 5 eggsGet this beast!!!

Pros: For aging socket939 this is one of the best upgrades. Accept Opty185 of course. Running 2.95GHz 268x11, memory 1x1(kingstone DDR500 4x1Gb, 3x3x3x8 2T) on Asus A8N-SLI SE. Only kicked Vcore to 1.425V. Can't get it to 3.0GHz even with upping the Vcore. Might be my mobo...

Cons: NONE.

Other Thoughts: Would be nice to have it at 3.0GHz but it just not my luck...

5 out of 5 eggsGood last stand for 939

Pros: This cpu was a big jump from my single core antholon 2.2Ghz. It really makes the difference with 2 cores vs. 1. I would say that if you are wanting to get the last stretch of life out of ur 939 mobo you should defiantly consider this cpu. Great bang for the buck!

Cons: shipping was ok to say the best. I suppose thats not neweggs fault but they did take a bit long to give me tracking # and conformation e-mail. but as usual the egg came through in the end and am very happy with result. price did drop 20 bucks after i received =(

Other Thoughts: if you need 2nd opinion, i'll be that opinion. DO IT!

4 out of 5 eggsGood but not great

Pros: Good speed. Ok overclockability*. Decent temps (with my Zalmann =D ). Great for videogames that use dual core; crysis rocks with this cpu! A half way decent deal for the current price.

Cons: *The only, and i mean only way to get this over 2.5GHz is to up the voltage. The other thing is that you dont wanna mess with the HT, so good RAM is a big help. You're prolly gonna have to up the FSB to 250 then lower the ldt mult. to 4 so you dont mess with it. On my proc, if the HT goes over 1250, it wont run stable. I miss my old 2.8GHz 4000+ (lol if only that was dual core)

Other Thoughts: Shoulda saved up and bought an AM2 deal. My current settings: fsb: 250MHz ldt mult.: 4x RAM divider: 9:10 speed: 2.63GHz. Not the best OC, i know.

5 out of 5 eggsCore LCB9E

Pros: Stable @ 12 x 234 or 2800mhz w/both cores maxed out on 2x prime95 & temp range 35-48 C. Fails prime95 in 30 seconds at 2860mhz stock vcore (1.35) & lapped/Arctic S5 stock HSF (copper w/pipes). Biostar nforce4 ultra MB & mushkin pc4400 ram. Replaces opty 148 @ 2750mhz. Would have regretted not buying this.

Cons: After flashing bios & installing latest drivers then installing new opty 180 my power button seems to do nothing. Its not the cpu or the power supply (good 500 watt). If I can't fix this it will be my last Biostar mainboard. System seems to start randomly after multiple button pushes & power supply disconnections.

Other Thoughts: I have set my bios to restart on power loss so I don't have to leave my computer running forever but even this is not working properly. Think I will post this to Usenet to look for answers.

5 out of 5 eggsGood first impressions

Pros: Upgraded from a XP3000 to this and couldn't be happier. Impressed with the stock heat sink, I installed crysis and played for a half hour and the whole time it never went above 53C. I think it actually runs cooler than my 3000. Idle temp is a bit higher than what I'd expect. Seems to stay around 39-41C even when under no load.

Cons: I've only had this in for about 2 hours. I might have to review again if something goes wrong.

Other Thoughts: This thing just extended the life of my 939 board for another few years. Newegg is currently selling this chip for $139, while most other places are selling it at $250-$300.
