I cannot believe how fast these things are
- Pros: Wow. I cannot even begin to emphasize how fast these things are. Even when using programs that don't take advantage of multi-threading, these chips seem to somehow find a workaround and blow me away in terms of performance.
- Cons: Price, but it was well worth the money. Overclockers will want an aftermarket heatsink, but even so the stock heatsink works fine. Mine runs at about 45ºC with the stock cooler at stock speeds.
- Other Thoughts: Upgrading to the Core 2 Exterme X6800 is completely unnecessary and a waste of money. This will do everything you need for xxx$ less. And if you really feel your need the performance of the X6800, overclock this baby. With 4MB L2 cache, the sky is the limit.
An Excellent CPU, Excellent Value
- Pros: This CPU is sitting at the optimal Enthusiast Performance/Price point in the Fall of 2006.
Uses the LGA775 socket, which will also accept Quad Core CPUs in the future -- so if your Motherboard will get a BIOS update for Quad Core (My Asus P5B Deluxe already has one), then there will be a really GREAT upgrade path for Intel hardware such as has never happened before in the history of Personal Computing.
Wide range of stable operating parameters. (Intel has re-acquired my Enthusiast respect!)
- Cons: The Stock cooler was a little difficult to install correctly in my motherboard (Asus P5B Deluxe), and the thermal paste that comes pre-applied on the heat sink is not very good. I had to reseat the cooler after applying better thermal grease (Like Arctic Silver) in order to get my temps down. (They were initially in the low 70 C range under light load, but came down to the low 40 C range after these minor efforts.)
- Other Thoughts: It is difficult to find ANY information on safe operating temperatures for the Core2Duo series, but many users seem to think that 35-61 C might be reasonable under idle and light loading, with 70's OK for brief periods. The "throttling back" temperature is apparently set by Intel in hardware at 85 C.
The freeware WinXP program "Core Temp" (Beta v0.93 by A. Liberman) opens the hood and tells you the temps of the 2 cores directly inside the CPU package. These sensors are reportedly what Intel uses to determine if the chip is overheating and needs to be "Throttled back."
Some folks report seeking only stability with this chip and not being too worried at all about the resulting temps since Intel is already monitoring and (reportedly!) has a plan to protect the cores. On the other hand, I have NOT seen anyone writing to say that they have actually seen these CPUs throttle back and protect themselves from overheating!

Excellent Mid Level Choice
- Pros: Fast, easy to overclock.
- Cons: Still expensive for a processor that has been on the market since 2006.
- Other Thoughts: I paired this processor with an EVGA 680i MB, 2 7900 GT cards, and Corsair ram. I am writing this review because I saw so many reviews wished they purchased the Quad core version. To be honest, the Quad core is a slower processor (check out Tom's Hardware if you don't beleive me). The reason why Quad cores are so much slower is that the front side bus is too slow to support four processors. You can have two cores running at 533 MHZ each, or you can have four cores running at 333.25 MHZ each. You won't notice a difference in games that only support one or two cores, until some programs start running in the background like virus scan or firewall software, then your system slows down to speeds of the old Intel (think of Pentium 4 Prescotts). Until motherboards have 2.0 GHZ FSB dual cores will be faster than quad cores.
Great
- Pros: Great CPU. When I bought it a a year ago the stock speed was great. Heck, even now it is a good gaming CPU. I am over clocking it now, it does a great job of that even with the stock heat sink.
- Cons: A year ago: Nothing.
Now: Price. The Q6600 isn't much more money than this and it's the quad core version so I would get that if I were building my rig this year.
- Other Thoughts: If you're a gamer this is a great CPU for the price and performance. It over clocks great so you can increase the speed as well. You can't go wrong with this, but the Q6600 is where it's at now.
C2D for Life
- Pros: The Processor is fast for the money, dual core is the way to go for gaming as of right now. there are no games at the moment that i know of that use quad core. this processor handles any game or program i throw at it. Im sure the quad cores are better for video editing, and im sure in the future games will be geared towards quad core processors.
- Cons: its not free ( Hey we all can dream )

Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.
|
 |
Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology Support Multiple performance modes enable optimum performance at the lowest power, using real-time dynamic switching of the voltage and frequency between multiple performance modes based on CPU demands.
|
 |
Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Intel EM64T provides an enhancement to Intel 32-bit architecture by enabling the desktop processor platform to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended virtual and physical memory
