OverviewCustomer ReviewSpecificationsProduct Tour
Intel proves that 64-bit processing doesn’t have to be expensive. Their Conroe-L based Celeron 420 has Intel 64 architecture which allows it to take advantage of larger amounts of memory and 64 bit operating systems. Since it works on LGA 775 boards it can take advantage of the most current technologies on the market.

The Advanced Digital Media Boos significantly improves media performance for audio, video, image processing, multimedia and more. 128-bit SSE instructions are now handled at 1 per clock cycle, effectively doubling the speed of execution over the previous generation of processors.

Based on a new energy-efficient microarchitecture, this Celeron processor enables smaller, quieter, and more capable desktop PCs.

Happy Camper

white Reviewed By: logiotek on 7/7/2007

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: You get exceptional performance/$ and performance/Watt and reliability.
Cons: Probably need to flash your motherboard's BIOS to a more current version to get this CPU support, I had to do this on my Dimension 9200 (BIOS 2.5.0 did it).
Other Thoughts: I went from Pentium D 915 to this Celly on my Dimension 9200 and let me tell you I am a happy camper! Individual synthetic benchmark results only went down by 10-15% but realistic benchmark results only went down by 5% tops. Didn't expect this from a Celeron especially when benchmarked against a Dual-Core chip. Not to mention the system's power consumption probably went down by about 75 Watts. This chip stays really cool and the fans stay quiet. Which is good for me since I keep my desktop running 24/7. With less heat dissipation comes the reliability boost.

Pros: This chip works great for a file/web server. I replaced a celeron D 3.2 @ 3.8ghz with this one and at stock its way faster. With stock fan it idles at 19C, load is 32C not bad at all.

Great low power CPU

white Reviewed By: ultatryon on 6/12/2008
Rating + 4
Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Very low power (35W TDP), runs very cool. Conroe based.
Cons: No Speedstep (as it is a Celeron)
Other Thoughts: If they had put Speedstep in these CPUs, the power utilization would be even lower! But such is the life of a lowly Celeron CPU

Pros: Low price.
Cons: Significantly slower than a Core2 Duo. However, it is also significantly cheaper, and you get what you pay for. If price is a big issue, it's probably worth it.

No AMD

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Cheap Price
Cons: Poor design of heatsink and fan. Had to use my older cooler master hs / fan. Couldn't get plastic clips to lock into place. The older cooler master used 4 screws to lock into place. For the money, look at an AMD 64 or dual core Athlon.
Other Thoughts: It is a shame AMD is doing so poorly in the market. For the lower end builders, AMD is the best.

Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.
