OverviewCustomer ReviewSpecificationsProduct Tour
The Western Digital Caviar SE Hard Drive is a clear leader in the race for the peak of desktop drives. Its 320 GB runs at 7200 RPM with up to 100 MB/s transfer rates. Its breakthrough 16 MB cache makes this hard drive suitable for high-performance home and business computing, as it can handle data-intensive applications and high-end multimedia applications. It offers average latency of 4.2 ms with an average seek time of only 8.9ms; and average write time of 10.9ms, resulting in both greater efficiency and safer data transfer.

This hard drive incorporates WD’s Data Lifeguard, an exclusive set of data protection features, including shock protection, environmental protection, real-time embedded error detection and repair. Its mechanism ensures automatic discovery, isolation, and repair of problems which may develop in a hard drive.

Despite a remarkable data transfer rate, WD's WhisperDrive makes the drive almost silent. The most common hard drive failure is due to shocks: ShockGuard protects the drive against damage from bumps and vibrations, and the stainless steel casing completes the protection, keeping it safe up to 250Gs whileworking, and 900Gs idle. Its SoftSeek technology offers smooth operation of read/write seek function, reducing seek noise, while the DuraStep Ramp technology locks the heads in a secured position, even when power is off.

Works excellently. All three of them.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I own three of these drives. Two of them are in a RAID 0 configuration, the third is as the system drive for a small server off in the corner. I've bought all three at various times over the past nine months, and all three have run beautifully. No overheating problems, despite the lack of direct cooling in the server. Not a single one has any corrupted sectors on the drive, knock on wood. No funny noises, no knocking, no dying, no gruesome death rattles. It does what a SATA II hard drive is supposed to do: Store my stuff, and give it back to me as quickly as possible. They're not even touted as being able to handle 24/7 operation, but they have done so marvelously thus far.
Cons: I normally don't write a review where there isn't some kind of downside. With these drives, I can't find a downside. They're not as temperamental as the 300GB Maxtor that's sitting off in the corner, fried. They're quiet, unlike the Maxtor that's sitting off in the corner, when it was actually running. And it runs cool... You get the idea.
Other Thoughts: Yet again, I'm going to stress to people the subtle differences between the binary system and the decimal system. Do not write a review bashing this drive and whining about how you don't see 320GB on the drive. For some strange reason, manufacturers decided to start advertising drive sizes in decimal gigabytes. To wit, 1,000,000,000 bytes = 1GB. One minor problem there. Windows, and nearly all other computing platforms, except for some asinine Linux utilities like FDisk, see a gigabyte as 2^30 bytes. 1,073,741,824 bytes for those of us who don't feel like doing the math. So yes, for each gigabyte a drive advertises, you're only going to get 0.931GB. No, the drive isn't defunct. It's not defective. And the company isn't trying to cheat you. It's just how the math works. As such, this drive's USABLE capacity is 298GB. Take this into account before purchasing... and before writing reviews to where you look stupid.

Pros: Extremely fast. Rated the highest score on HDTACH for burst speed. Quiet, and relatively cool for a fast drive.
Cons: Slightly low on the random access times, average is 14.5 ms.
Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of these drives to replace my Seagate 7200.7 SATA150 NCQ 160gb. I simply needed more space and the price was right. I'm running an ASUS A8N-SLI DELUXE, and these things absolutely scream on the NFORCE4 NVRAID Controller. If you have the same motherboard as I do, don't put them on the Silicon RAID Controller, as it does not support SATA 3GB/S nor NCQ. These drives rated the highest burst speed and overall score using HDTACH on both quick and long tests. Average burst speeds are around 305mb/s! After 24 hrs running, they are extremely quiet and fairly cool. I was apprehensive about going WD instead of Seagate, because I like how Quiet Seagates are. Well, I am pretty impressed so far with WD and this new drive. Fast, quiet, cool, what more could you ask for? They're housed in an Antec Super Lanboy (v2) case, which has rubber-wrapped HDD screw mounts and padded bays, so that helps with the noise tremendously. I can't even hear them a foot away under my desk.

No support for Native Command Queing = PROBLEMS

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Very quiet and cool. Works with some MB & OS combos, not with others.
Cons: Doesn't support Native Command Queing. Some motherboards assume it does (like almost every other SATA drive), and enable that by default (eg. 680i). This leads to problems when large transfers are done, eg. copying many files from one drive to another.
Other Thoughts: NCQ is supported by WD's 160GB and 400-500GB models, but not the 250GB & 320GB models. I am throwing two of the WD drives I own away because of the problems with Vista on 680i MB, and getting Hitachi 500GB.

Runs hot - Died after 7 Months

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Worked ok while it lasted
Cons: Died after 7 months
Other Thoughts: I noticed it getting very warm after I installed it, so I put it in the bottom bay where it had plenty of space around it for ventilation and added a hard drive cooler. It ran considerably cooler after that, so I seriously doubt that heat was a factor. Hopefully WD will honor their 3 year warranty since it’s hardly over 7 months old.

By comparison, I’m using another WD SATA drive in the bay above it, and it’s running very cool. However, it’s only 80GB.
