2 out of 5 eggsBuy if you want to replace

Pros: fast while lasts...

Cons: Drive was manufactured July 2003, bought in November 2005. Warranty from manufacturer expired before bought.
Go figure...Bad Drive. Fails (has occured with a couple of clients...)

1 out of 5 eggsBad, Bad experience with DiamondMax 10

Pros: One lasted 5 months, the other is still going...

Cons: In June, I bought 2 DiamondMax 10 300gb Hard Drives. Today, Windows tells me its files are corrupt. Trying to fix this, Chkdsk stalls at 25% for 15 minutes, but eventually finishes (with errors). A reinstall of Windows also stalls (while deleting a .log file, not something that should take 20 minutes, (that’s how long I gave it before I gave up hope)). Got Windows working on the other drive, went to Maxtor to start an RMA. They make me download a tool to tell me what I already know before I can RMA. Of course, when I use the tool, the drive is in the working stage of its apparent intermittent operation (working, not working, working, etc). The tool is DOS only, so I cant just wait for it to happen again while continuing normal use of my computer. Rawr.

Other Thoughts: At least I can get data off....

I have 2 Wxxxern digitals from 4 and 6 years ago now that are still working.

3 out of 5 eggsAn ok drive

Pros: Very fast drive, not that loud.

Cons: Makes alot of noise when starting up, more than other drives, but it runs quitley, my motherboard refuses to let it reboot(i actually have to shutdown first, then start back up).

Other Thoughts: Not the best drive in the world, but it couldve been a little cheaper.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't waste your time and money.

Pros: WHILE IT WORKED it worked well(fast and quiet).

Cons: HIGHLY unreliable drive with an extremley short lifespan.

Other Thoughts: Ive gone through three of these things now. The first one i ordered died after its third day of use(motor burn out). I then ordered a replacement from newegg and a second drive. One of these could not format fully but would quick format. It still lives and i use it as a storage drive. The other drive worked fine from last August until May of this year when it started giving read/write errors and eventually died alltogether. Do yourselves a favor and avoid this drive like Bubonic.

5 out of 5 eggsNothing but Maxtor

Pros: These drives are about as fast as any other 7200rpm w/8mb cache drive around, but they are QUIET. These are the quietest drives I've ever worked with, perfect for a HTPC or office rig.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I've bought 3 of these, one for a HTPC and 2 in RAID0 in a Gaming Rig, all 3 are quiet and reliable. SMART reports all the drives are healthy and I see/hear no signs of premature failure. (remember that ALL hard drives only last 3-5 years, it's the nature of the media)

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable Drive

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Poor quality, noisy.

Other Thoughts: This drive is part of a RAID 1 mirror on a Dell Dimension 9100. Occasionally, the RAID fails and it says that this drive is bad. Robooting solves the problem for a week or so. Will replace/warranty.

2 out of 5 eggsDIED!!! after 6 Months...

Pros: Was great while it still worked except for the ocasional times when it didnt start at all.

Cons: Every now and then it wouldn't start up and i'd have to shutdown and disconnect/reconnect the cables.
Finally ended up just dying out after 6 months.

Other Thoughts: If your inside the warranty time, the best Maxtor will do is replace this drive with refurbished one... if you read up youll see some people keep getting replacement after another until the day their warranty expires. Wxxxxn Dxxxal is the way to go!!!

3 out of 5 eggsWarning if you an NForce chipset

Pros: Inexpensive, quiet, good feature set.

Cons: NForce chipset compatability issues.

Other Thoughts: I ordered two of these from Newegg. One shipped with later firmware, one with earlier firmware. The drive with earlier firmware would lockup in Windows and DOS. If you have the problem you'll need to go to www.maxtor.com, and search for nforce. You should find KB article 2685 that lists the affected drives, and how to get a firmware update to fix the issue. Having done so, the drive seems to be working fine.

2 out of 5 eggsI would buy another... for me to poop on.

Pros: Cheap in price.

Cons: Cheap in quality

Other Thoughts: 3.0 Gb/s turned into 0.0 Gb/s and a lost raid 0 volume in 2 months. Backup all your information if you want to buy one.
