The Western Digital Caviar SE Hard Drive is a clear leader in the race for the peak of desktop drives. Its 160 GB runs at 7200 RPM with up to 100 MB/s transfer rates. Its breakthrough 8 MB cache makes this hard drive suitable for high-performance home and business computing, as it can handle both data-intensive and high-end multimedia applications. This hard drive incorporates WD’s Data Lifeguard, an exclusive set of data protection features, including shock protection, environmental protection, real-time embedded error detection and repair. Great Product
- Pros: This hard drive has been operating perfectly for the past (almost) year that I've had it. Once again WD has proved itself reliable, especially in comparison to Maxtor (I had a Maxtor that failed after only 3 months)
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: For the user who mentioned that the actual size of the HDD is never the said amount, the reason is not because theres anything wrong with the HDDs. It's actually got a technical reason, related to the number of bytes that are considered a kilobyte.
Usually one kilo of anything is considered to be 1000 of that thing (ex. 1 kg= 1000 grams) but in computers its actually 1 KB = 1024 Bytes, so if you do the calculations you'll see that based on what value you use as the equivalent of a KB, you will get two different values, one which is the nominal 160GB, and the other which is the actual 150 something GBs.
WD 160 GB SATA, Great Drive
- Pros: This drive is great! I installed it on an old Biostar IDEQ 200n which only supports SATA 1.0, 150 (purchased from New Egg). The drive has a jumper setting to allow operation on the older format. The SATA set speeds everything up. It’s quiet and runs like a charm. This drive will give this machine new life for years to come. Shipping was fast, and New Egg is the best!(I use this machine for back up storage, printer sharing, network drive only. I have a tower for my gaming.)
- Cons: I haven’t run into any cons with the hard drive, Windows on the other hand is a different story. (SEE OTHER)
- Other Thoughts: MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE YOUR SATA FLOPPY READY FOR A CLEAN INSTALL!!!!! I did have a difficult time making the SATA drive my boot drive in my clean install. I downloaded the drivers, however I saved them in a folder named “driver.” Make sure that on the floppy the txtsetup.oem is clearly visible and not in a folder. Having them all in a folder hides the txtsetup.oem file and makes the install frustrating. My fault, not the drives. This will make your life and install easier. Enjoy!

FAILED DRIVE
- Pros: Looks Nice
- Cons: Drive failed instantly when attempting to format it. Can't give it 0 stars.
- Other Thoughts: I have never had a hard drive fail faster than this one. I have also had problems with WD hard drives in the past. They fail often. I have switched over to Samsung.
Not the best drive
- Pros: low price
- Cons: I bought this drive while I was building my brother-in-law's computer a few months ago, and not long after, the drive developed several bad sectors and the OS refused to boot. I was only able to recover a fraction of his data.
- Other Thoughts: Thanks to newegg, the drive was successfully RMA'd and a new, hopefully more stable drive was delivered.
2 out of 2 ain't bad...oh wait
- Pros: One of them worked for about 9 weeks.
- Cons: I ordered 2 originally, but one came preloaded with bad sectors. The second one has lasted me almost two months, but it appears to be developing the same bad sectors.
- Other Thoughts: I would normally think something else was wrong with my computer in these situations, but my 500GB WD is in full working order.
