5 out of 5 eggsGreat old workhorse

Pros: Quiet, reliable. Probably the most reliable series of ATA hard drives that I've used.
Still useful for low budget headless servers and such things where you don't care about it being fast.
I believe these drives support acoustic settings, which select between slightly faster or quieter operation. If you get a 2nd hand drive make sure it's set the way you want it.

Cons: well, it's obsolete and slow by today's standards. But it works.

Other Thoughts: I agree with the last reviewer, the Seagate 7200.7 series are some of the all time greatest hard drives IMO.
I bought 3 of these in different sizes when new, and acquired a few others 2nd hand. Back in the day, I used 2 of the new ones for disk-intensive video capture and editing. After 3-4 years those 2 drives started to fail gracefully and were replaced under warranty, the refurbs have had an easier life and are still working today. The 3rd, an 80GB model, has been running my sister's PC since it was new, and has been transferred between 3 motherboards. She's still using it.
I've also inherited a few of these drives from 2nd hand purchases. I've noticed that when buying old PCs, the 7200.7 are the most common drives I find in them that still work.

Yesterday I bought an old Dell business PC with this drive model, the ST340014A 40GB 7200.7. It is for this drive that I put my ownership as less than 1 week. But I've accessed the drive's SMART log reflecting it's entire life of service.
Everything in this Dell is exactly unmodified as it left the factory - this was confirmed by checking the service tag.
I just ran HDAT2 (a very good hard drive testing utility) to inspect the ST340014A drive. It passed a thorough surface scan with no hesitation. More impressive is the SMART log information: this drive has logged 34,990 power on hours. The SMART Comprehensive error log has recorded ZERO faults of any kind over the life of the drive. Every field in the SMART history is just perfect - no reallocated sectors, no spin up retries, etc. This drive is still in flawless condition at 35K operating hours.

Obviously you can't buy these new anymore, and they aren't as fast as a modern drive. But if you come across any 2nd hand, don't turn your nose up at it. These are quiet and reliable workhorses for applications where you don't care about the speed. There's a reason so many office machines still have working 7200.7's in them.

5 out of 5 eggsStill going strong, but time to upgrade

Pros: still strong in 2013, I bought it many years ago when 40gB was actually a big deal.

Cons: really none. but only 40gB and discontinued

Other Thoughts: only reviewing this because I was searching it to check the specs because I'm getting ready to upgrade my HDD since this one is barely big enough for the excessively massive Win 7 OS. The drive has been in my studio for many years and still goes strong. It did recently start to cause checkdisk to run during startup, but everything always checks out ok. Physically still strong, but old age will likely put it down soon. Wish they all lasted like this.

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST340014A

Pros: Relatively fast performance for an IDE drive.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Purchased 2 of these for use as the boot drive on 2 different systems. On one of the systems this replaces a relic from another PC age, a Maxtor 90576D4 (5GB, circa 1998). While it doesn't necessarily run as cool as the ancient Maxtor the performance more than makes up for it. As a side note, drives DO NOT, lose any space when formatted. Drives are rated at the true byte level. In this drives case, its rated at 40GB, since we don't have the actual byte count we'll use a generic 40,000,000,000 byte figure. Take 40,000,000,000 divided by 1,073,741,824 (if you don't know how I got this figure then your technical understanding is obviously below 'Somewhat High') to get an estimate of the corrected GB rating. The result is 37.25, actual corrected GB space as reported by the OS is 37.27.

1 out of 5 eggsbig name, small performance

Pros: quiet and quick

Cons: It did not work long enough for me to apprecaite the positive aspects. It died. There was no sign of trouble, no noise, error messages, nothing. I turned off the system at the end of the day, turned it back on the next and it simply did not work.

Other Thoughts: tech support was very helpful with this manufacturer, but I would not have known that if there was no problem. If you get this drive, back up everything very frequently.

1 out of 5 eggsSeagate Warranty is Worthless

Pros: None

Cons: This is the third drive that has died. I learned my lesson this time, didn't install it in a computer, put it in an external enclosure to test it first and it died after a few weeks of super light storage use.

Other Thoughts: Seagate's vaunted five year warranty is not worth the paper it's written on.
If I keep paying to ship this drive back to Seagate, at the end of the five years it will be worth $xxx.

5 out of 5 eggsSuper Quiet

Pros: It transfers just as fast as the other 40 gig hard drives out there, but this one is silent! I'm not only talking about the read/write sound, but all the idle sound in general. Its not existant

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely Wonderful

Pros: Replaced an old Maxtor with this. Absolutely wonderful little hard drive. I actually sat it on top of my box while i was building, it fell off, literally bounced once off the floor, and ended up on the other end of the room... worked fine, all my files were ok, not a thing on the drive was harmed. So if you're looking for a durable hard drive it doesn't get much better than Seagate.

Cons: Yeah, slower than SATA.

Other Thoughts: Didn't order mine from Newegg, but it's the same drive. Not sure if this one does, but store bought ones come with a installation disk, if you're using this as a primary drive, don't even bother with the disk, just format and install an OS. Great disk with good durability.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine

Pros: Added this drive as a master in a rebuild of an old computer I had laying around that turned into a full new build.Used the old drive as a slave with Windows ME on it and all my files and software.
Loaded Window 2000 on the new drive and let windows format the new drive everything works fine.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I wasted time going to Seagate and downloading and burning the setup disk and manual. You dont really need it. I did not even use it after all.

2 out of 5 eggsJust Can't Win

Pros: Not many for this drive.

Cons: Original drive failed, RMA to Seagate who returned a Certified Repaired HDD, which failed after a month.

Other Thoughts: I have at least six other Seagate hard drives, this is the only one I've ever had problems with. Not too stoked with the warranty service returning a drive that was worse than the one I RMA'd.
