Remember when you could buy a 100Mb drive for this price? Well, those days are gone and good riddance!
Here's 500 gigabytes of external storage you can plug into your eSATA or USB 2.0 port, compatible with Mac OS 10.2 or higher, and flavors of Windows from 98SE to Vista.
A heat-dissipating aluminum case provides sturdy protection for the drive system while the drive system provides protection for your valuable data with USB 2.0 transfer rates of up to 60 MB/s or eSATA transfer rates of up to 300MB/s. Video archives, backups, auxiliary storage; if you need it, this system will probably provide it! At a price like this, you might be able to afford two or more, and you know you'll need the extra storage next week.
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: Beautiful, sturdy design. The brushed aluminum feels great and seems very strong.
I bought this drive for an insane price.
Cons: MUCH noisier than I had anticipated. The drive vibrates (in use or not), which creates a low humming noise. Due to its design, I was hoping for silence except when accessing the drive (which I can understand). My new Macbook Pro is completely silent by comparison (and in general).
I was planning on leaving the drive on at all times for auto backup. With the noise, I cannot leave it on.
Other Thoughts: I can feel the drive vibrating. As it sits on my desk near my computer, this annoys me, as well.

Great so far!

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Cheap Quality drive inside Seems well built Attractive Powers down automatically on my Mac
Cons: Blue light could be annoying for some Wall connector is really large
Other Thoughts: I really thought I would just buy a drive and enclosure and do the external thing myself, but I really loved the look of the Fantom G-Force enclosure and the price couldn't be beat. So far, so good. Drive is fast, not overly loud (it's not silent, but its not loud, it's staying cool (transferring about 130 gigs from my MacBook via Time Machine to it as I type this) and the drive inside is a highly rated WD drive. The enclosure looks and feels well made - I'm happy I bought it.

Pros: Low cost, attractive, reasonably fast. Esata port. Good for storing things that are not critical.
Cons: Drive is about to fail-starting to lose sectors almost daily. Has always run a little on the hot side-Per Data Sentinel 45C. Noticed a slight clicking sound when the lost sectors began to arrive-slightly after the one year mark-imagine that. Data Sentinel puts its health at 9%. Once you get past 500gb storage I thinks its probably time to kick in an extra $20 and get a reliable drive.
Other Thoughts: I hate the reviews that are done after one week-what a waste of space.
Manufacturer Response:We are sorry to hear you're having trouble with your unit. Please call 1(800)800-DISK select option #2 for Technical Support or email us at support@micronet.com and we will do our best to resolve your issue.

Not Reliable
Reviewed By: Dan on 10/8/2009
Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Bought 2, the first one works as it should. Both were stored in an air conditioned server room on stable server racks.
Cons: The second one started clicking after a month, then 2 weeks later the files became inaccessible. After formatting and scanning for bad sectors, it became usable for another week. Then, it locked up and stopped being recognized by windows xp, vista, and 2003 server, in addition to ubuntu linux.
RMA'd it to the manufacturer and got the same hd back in the original box (which they used for shipping, not very good protection). Worked for about 2 weeks and "died" again. Waiting on our second RMA now...
Other Thoughts: If data integrity is the focus of this hard drive, then I would strongly advise a different brand.
The Manufacturer does NOT format the drive before they repair it.
It may cost you more in shipping costs to keep drive working than it would to spend more money and get something more reliable

Still works just fine
Reviewed By: coyote on 6/7/2009
Tech Level: average - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Compact, reliable, comes up quickly when turned on (USB). Both USB and eSATA work just fine.
Cons: None (I have come to like the blue light - can easily see it flashing when disk is active).
Other Thoughts: Have now been using for 9 months as second backup (not offsite but secured from fire/water) in USB mode with no problems at all. As of last 2 days have been using via eSATA. Windows copies are at least twice as fast on eSATA as on USB (my SATA is only 1.5Gb/s), and essentially the same speed as copies to my internal backup disk (by chance the same model as in the Fantom).
