In today’s world flexibility is extremely important, especially in the computing world which requires multiple connectivity methods for peripherals. Fantom Drives has you covered with their G-Force Quad Interface series. On the back of the brushed aluminum housing are ports for USB 2.0, eSATA, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800. Now you don‘t have to worry about what kind of connection the host computer has because the drive can handle it all.
The GF500Q has a 500GB SATA drive that spins at 7200RPM with a 16MB buffer for extreme performance. Cables for all of the interface options are included so you don’t have to buy anything extra. The drive will work on PCs with Windows 2000 and newer and Macs with OS X 10.2 or higher.

2nd try and 2nd failed!
- Pros: The hard drive within the housing seems to work just fine.
- Cons: The electronics in the housing are junk!!! The Firewire never worked an then the usb stopped working too.
- Other Thoughts: I know some of you want to take the risk as I did because of the vast connection options. Don't take the risk!!! At this point I'm going to buy a new encloser and swap the hard drive so that I don't have to start all over yet again. This is my 2nd try with this model and both have had the same problem. The 2nd one lasted about 2 month. The first lasted a few days. The Manucature knew right away what the problem was. That tells me this is a very common problem with this model. Newegg should remove it from there stock.
Pesky power switch!
- Pros: I have 3 Fantom Drives that have worked beautifully for some time now. They always connect instantly with my Mac, and are fast/reliable drives.
- Cons: The POWER SWITCH has apparently broken. I noticed it was a little unsteady/wobbly when turning the drive on, but hoped it was nothing. After a little over a month after purchase, the drive will not turn on at all. Unfortunately, I can't afford to lose any data on the drive meaning that I can't take advantage of the warranty (will have to open the case to access the hard drive instead of sending it in to fix a crummy little piece). I've noticed others having "cheap switch" issues with this drive, so be aware of that.
- Other Thoughts: Yes, the blue light is incredibly bright and the enclosure does get a bit hot (it does pull heat away from the drive without using a fan); but I'm not terribly bothered by either. Other than the cheap power switch component, I've loved using my Fantom Drives.
Problems From Day One
- Pros: Cost, Drive size, Every connection I could ever need.
- Cons: I got this drive and right out the box I had issues getting it to work with the fire wire-a connection. After a few days of fighting with that I tried the USB connection. Everything worked fine for about a day and a half. Now I get un able to write errors. I called the tech support and had to leave a message. They said they would call back within 24 hours. That didn’t happen. I called again and they had me do a scan on the drive that failed. I called back and they immediately knew what was wrong like this is a common problem with this drive. They told me to return it to New Egg or fill out an RMA form on there website and send it to them. The hard drive itself seems fine. The problem is with the enclosure electronics.
- Other Thoughts: At this point I'm at the start of the return process. I've never had to do this before and I hope I never have to do it again. We'll see. If I have more issues I'll be writing another review.
