Professional Drive

white Reviewed By: Jhon on 2/20/2008
Rating + 4
Tech Level Tech Level: average - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: Easy to use. Manual easy to follow. Drive ready to go out of box. Crisp professional style with brushed aluminum finish and blue LED at front vent. Slightly louder than my internal drives but overall good noise level and no noisy fan. Stand does not screw on but holds well. Decent balance but harder nudge could knock it over. Comes with all the cables. Fast performer and can take a beating. I've already dropped it twice from 3ft up. Once caught my shoe the other was concrete and it stuttered for a minute but then kept on going. Aluminum shell is solid.
Cons: Unable to get illustrated steps off Fantoms support website. A.C. adapter weird shape and could use up extra plugs/outlets.
Other Thoughts: The aluminum case gets really warm, not hot. When using it it gets warmer but overall temperature is stable even when idle. I guess that means the aluminum is doing its job and also acting as a heat sink?
Manufacturer Response:Thank you for your feedback. Your comment regarding the heat sink is correct. The aluminum skin has been designed to help your drive eliminate excess heat through the skin of the enclosure. To assist in this we suggest that you place the drive in an open, well-ventilated area. Also, using the included foot can improve the heat dissipation of your G-Force drive.

A Winner

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Factoring in price, this is easily the best external hard drive product I've encountered. The build quality and design rivals G-Technology drives and the performance is great. The case is compact (far more so than LaCie drives), all metal and fanless. It gets warm, but not so much so that I'm concerned about longevity. It's quiet too.
Cons: That LED is garishly bright and can't be deactivated (without disassembling the drive, anyhow). Electrical tape solves the problem so no love lost, but LEDs like this have to be the dumbest trend in consumer electronics. It's supposed to tell me it's on, not to light up my desk.
Other Thoughts: I'm very pleased with this drive. I've been hammering on it (transfered 400gb across it in one shot yesterday) and have encountered no problems whatsoever. I will surely buy a second one soon. I'm using the drive under Mac OS X 10.5.2 via FW800.

2nd try and 2nd failed!

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: The hard drive within the housing seems to work just fine.
Cons: The electronics in the housing are junk!!! The Firewire never worked an then the usb stopped working too.
Other Thoughts: I know some of you want to take the risk as I did because of the vast connection options. Don't take the risk!!! At this point I'm going to buy a new encloser and swap the hard drive so that I don't have to start all over yet again. This is my 2nd try with this model and both have had the same problem. The 2nd one lasted about 2 month. The first lasted a few days. The Manucature knew right away what the problem was. That tells me this is a very common problem with this model. Newegg should remove it from there stock.

Pesky power switch!

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I have 3 Fantom Drives that have worked beautifully for some time now. They always connect instantly with my Mac, and are fast/reliable drives.
Cons: The POWER SWITCH has apparently broken. I noticed it was a little unsteady/wobbly when turning the drive on, but hoped it was nothing. After a little over a month after purchase, the drive will not turn on at all. Unfortunately, I can't afford to lose any data on the drive meaning that I can't take advantage of the warranty (will have to open the case to access the hard drive instead of sending it in to fix a crummy little piece). I've noticed others having "cheap switch" issues with this drive, so be aware of that.
Other Thoughts: Yes, the blue light is incredibly bright and the enclosure does get a bit hot (it does pull heat away from the drive without using a fan); but I'm not terribly bothered by either. Other than the cheap power switch component, I've loved using my Fantom Drives.

Problems From Day One

Tech Level Tech Level: average - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Cost, Drive size, Every connection I could ever need.
Cons: I got this drive and right out the box I had issues getting it to work with the fire wire-a connection. After a few days of fighting with that I tried the USB connection. Everything worked fine for about a day and a half. Now I get un able to write errors. I called the tech support and had to leave a message. They said they would call back within 24 hours. That didn’t happen. I called again and they had me do a scan on the drive that failed. I called back and they immediately knew what was wrong like this is a common problem with this drive. They told me to return it to New Egg or fill out an RMA form on there website and send it to them. The hard drive itself seems fine. The problem is with the enclosure electronics.
Other Thoughts: At this point I'm at the start of the return process. I've never had to do this before and I hope I never have to do it again. We'll see. If I have more issues I'll be writing another review.
