1 out of 5 eggsAviod this Drive!!!!! Expensive paper weight

Pros: Lucky to read a disk let alone burn a disk. Relizing I just bought an expensive paper weight. Came brand new in the factory box also.

Cons: Doesn't burn anything but coasters. Better off going with the highly rated Samsung drive for 1/4 of the price. My 4 year old TDK DVD +/-R drive puts this to shame.

Other Thoughts: I've be fighting tech support for over 6 months trying to get this fixed. They recently tried blaming the chipset. So I decided to buy the Samsung drive to prove them wrong. I was right and tech support was wrong. Now they are saying the warranty is up and won't fix it even after showing them proof that I started complaining about issues with this drive back in June when the warranty easily covered.

2 out of 5 eggsworked well - when it worked -

Pros: - never made coasters, every burn was good. MUCH better than the NEC units I had used previously.

- came with both beige and black faceplates.

- SATA speed was faster overall than similar IDE units

- Plextor support seemed really cool and professional during the warranty repalcement call.

Cons: - it failed...like others claimed.

- when it failed, it started BSOD'ing the XP Pro machine it was in.

Other Thoughts: - if this drive starts to fail reading some CDs, watch out. When it starts to mae a high-pitched whine....PULL this drive from your PC...or it may cause BSOD's whenever it is accessed, and whatever you were working on will be lost.... this backup unit turned into a potential data loss device.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: I've burnt at least a few hundred DVDs with this and Nero and I can only remember a few times I had a bad burn. That's including the times where I had to restart because Nero crashed.

Cons: Price

Other Thoughts: I really want a hardware based option to universally disable auto-eject drive tray!

5 out of 5 eggsPlextor PX716SA running through Adaptec SATA card

Pros: I previously wrote a review on this drive and mentioned that because of the Adaptec interfact card I was having inconsistent operation. I have recently downloaded the Beta version of Windows Media Player. It is I beleve in its second release, and it is working with the Plextor drives perfectly inspite of the fact I am running the two drives off of a Adaptec PCI to SATA I adapter card, which Plextors does not recommend.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsLong as its supported

Pros: Awesome Burner. Burns DL disks which can be somewhat hard to find at the moment. 8.5 gigs on 1 cd is nice. Burns fast and is readable on every drive ive tried it on. Support is limited to what plextor says they have tried it on. Some of the SATA drivers are not suppported. CHECK PLEXTOR FOR YOUR MOTHERBOARD BEFORE YOU BUY IT. 99% of the negative reviews are because those people did not check to see if it was compatable with their system or not!! Other than that its a great buy! :)

Cons: Requires name brand drivers / chip set to support drive.

Other Thoughts: If you know what your doing you wont have a problem with this. Most of the Cons on this drive are insignificant since most didnt check with plextor first.

5 out of 5 eggsMine has been perfect

Pros: I've owned this drive for around 2 years since I built my rig and it's been literally perfect from day one. In fact i'm gonna put it in my new rig here soon.

Cons: none at all.

Other Thoughts: I don't even use expensive media and I haven't had even a moments trouble from this drive. It installed flawlessly and has always been perfect.

5 out of 5 eggsCompatability issues

Pros: I have three Plextor SATA I PX716SA drives. Two are in my computer and are running off of an Adaptec SATA I inferface card.

I have been having problems with these drives. Checking in Adaptecs Q&A and ran across the fact that their interface is only intended for Hard Drives, not DVD drives. It works, but requires rebooting occassionally to play movies.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsPX-716SA Half-Baked

Pros: SATA on an optical drive is a great idea towards getting rid of IDE cables.

Cons: Implementation of this idea is half-baked and should have remained in the Plextor lab until they could resolve the optical SATA issues.

10 months after installing the drive and VERY light usage, I found it was the cause of strange lockups. My computer wouldn't go past the basic POST without locking.

According to Plextor tech support there are issues with SATA optical drives and native/onboard SATA controllers. , especially with nForce chipsets.

The PX-716A would have been a better choice, but I'm not sure I'm willing to risk buying the IDE version of this drive and get stuck with another paperweight.

Other Thoughts: I've always had great success with Plextor drives in the past, and am very disappointed that the company so far is not willing to resolve this issue.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive!

Pros: Quick Quality Burns, Quiet (Even quieter with plextools).
Highly recommended by majority of computer professionals. Quality built.
Pleasure to use.
Simple to install Sata works great for most semi-intelligent people.
Firmware updates every few months allowing even quicker and/or higher quality burning.
Offers great useful features not found on anyother drives.
Reliable.
In the top 5 list of best drives. maybe.. even top three

Cons: Please use your head and dont try to run this drive in a RAID Configuration.

Other Thoughts: Just plug it in to you motherboard and leave it be.
Don't bash this drive because you can't figure out how to build a computer.
Can't wait till The plextor Blu-ray drives come out.
