Sony/NEC's Optiarc multi-format ATAPI/EIDE DVD burner features the capability of burning DVD±R discs at up to amazing 18X speed, writing 4.7GB DVD in about 6 minutes. Dual-layer disc burning allows you to store 8.5 GB of data on a single DVD. Buffer under-run protection feature ensures burn quality and keeps you from losing disc blanks to write-errors.

You get 32X CD-R/RW recording too, so there's no need to clutter your desk with a separate CD burner. The burner is compatible with Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP, and Vista. Pros: I have had this drive for a couple of months. It has worked flawlessly since I bought it. I have used it to burn Cds and DVDs. I liked it so much, I bought a black one for another computer.

Cons: The tray is a little loud when it opens and closes. No big deal. The black one that I bought does not make the same noise. It is very smooth and quiet when opening and closing.

Pros: Inexpensive, relatively quiet.

Cons: PIO mode only after 32/38/310 days. Tried everything, including installing in separate computer. After second return to Newegg, I just tossed in the recycle bin.

Other Thoughts: NEC drives use to be the best, but the new partnership with SONY has been a disaster.

Waited too long to install a lemon

Pros: Typical XP install... the machine saw it and installed the driver as required. No brainer there.

Cons: I bought this in Sept for a birthday present in November. It was installed in the PC and it cuts DVDs but not CDs. It won't even read a CD. Bad out of the box!

Other Thoughts: My bad for waiting too long to install as now it's out of warranty. I've tried 3 different brands of CDs and none work. I've been happy with my other Sony drives so I still give this 2 stars.
