NEC BLACK 18X Burner
- Pros: Order the product yesterday, got it today. I'm freakin amazed by how fast their service is. The product is by Sony NEC Opti. (forgot the name). Burned 4 types of media so far, TDK, Ritec, Memorex and some low-end media called Sonic. 3 of the 4 medias burned at full 16x while sonic rarely reads at all.
It's a great pickup for those of whom are budget wise. It's faster then my old NEC-3500A burner which coincidently is 16x as well but for some reason it doesnt burn at 16x on my TDKs. I've even updated the firmware for it but still no difference.
- Cons: Other then the low-end media, No problems so far...
- Other Thoughts: Great Burner, Can't wait to test out the 18x portion of the burner, though I haven't seen any 18x media yet...
Cables Matter (duh)
- Pros: Burns fast provided you are smart enough to remember the difference between 40 conductor and 80 conductor ide/ata cables.
- Cons: None other than my own stupidity
- Other Thoughts: Make sure to use the newer ide cable with 80 conductors. I had very strange memory errors etc... when trying to access the drive on and Abit KN8 SLI MB. I got a hint from the NEC site to switch to PIO mode. Then the drive worked fine though not at 16x. Finally it occurred to me that to enable the higher UDMA modes I needed to use and 80 conductor ide cable. All problems solved after that. newegg.com might consider throwing this reminder up on the drive info for us cable challenged fools. :)
