ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless-AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

5 out of 5 eggs So far so good 04/05/2015

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless-AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router

Pros: I upgraded from a refurbished asus n65u that has worked for the last 2.5+ years like a work horse. I only had to start rebooting it every 2 weeks recently (stability issues) and decided instead of rolling back to try a newer more high profile version. I purchased this from newegg store and this has been great. Noticeably faster authentication into services, transfer rates are 20% faster, and of course wireless ac. The range is much better as I can now receive 2.4 all the way down the street in a densely populated neighborhood full of brick. Love the added security features of aiprotect. It has started blocking malicious websites which is a plus (this was what sold me on this). Household features several iPhones, surface pro, mac pro, macbook pros, game systems from xbox 360, ps4, xbone, wiiu, lenovo carbon, android boxes, qnap nas, zmodo dvr, hdhomerun prime etc. This handles all of these at once with grace. Better reception, more customization features and you can see all the traffic in more detail than the n65u. I downloaded the latest firmware (which was only 2 days old) and haven't had to reboot it yet. Very Stable so far...I haven't really completed much benchmarking, but I was pulling over 125Mbps on macbook pro (2009) over 2.4ghz, I'll bring my wireless AC macbook home next week to test.

Cons: Physically HUGE! I mean this thing is almost as big as a game system itself! No free Hat

Other Thoughts: I love asus' free DDNS service, works like a charm, also in network tools wake on lan works like a charm. I tried setting up a few of the VPN features and they function as they need to (PPTP is less secure). They also have been updating the firmware every month or so which is nice. I have been working with asus routers the last 3 or so years and I really love the performance, yes they have security issues, and yes they have annoying quirky glitches like the 5ghz problem that kicks people off (N65u) but I have had good luck with them so far (knocks on wood).

Pros: I purchased this originally more than 2 years ago (my first post is below) but I love this thing and has not missed a beat! I bought a second for my parents house and they live off of this thing. The one I have at my house has about 25 devices connected (we are device fatigued millennials), and this includes all the new gen systems, idevices, windows, mac, NAS, wifi printer, surveillance system, HDhomerun Prime,8 port switch and it has never had an issue. I usually move a 1gb movie in about 30 seconds (over wifi). Wired is less than 30sec per Gb. Also I love the Asus port forwarding service, never an issue as i FTPS constantly.

Cons: It tips over very easy, but it is how it is shaped, it stands right up, so whenever connecting or unconnecting it physically falls over. The firmwares are hit and miss, i notice about every other version is glitchy. I enter web interface on the last firmware update and whenever i refresh my devices it kills my connection to the interface and won't work again until i restart the router? On positive note they fixed this in last update.

Other Thoughts: Asus did a good job with this, for $60 find me something better...New firmware shows resources and shows processor load and memory allocations etc. I am entrenched in the asus world of networking as I am so used to their UI. 5 GHZ screams speed, so I only connect my laptops to this, and mobile devices get the 2.4 GHZ. This plays very nice with macs and bounjor, ddns works like a charm, smb, dnla all the normal stuff just works, GREAT WORK ASUS.

Foxconn nT-iBT18 1 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel HD Graphics Integrated by CPU NanoPC Barebone

4 out of 5 eggs Great for HTPC or home user 02/03/2015

This review is from: Foxconn nT-iBT18 1 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel HD Graphics Integrated by CPU NanoPC Barebone

Pros: Very small (book size), relatively quiet, decent performance with SSD, or SSHD. Wifi works and has decent range, well crafted aka this doesn't feel cheap at all. I wanted to upgrade my HTPC and had some spare parts laying around (4GB ram, msata 64GB, and a 500 GB SSHD seagate) so I figured why not. Set up was pretty easy, as everyone has said make sure you choose win 7, or 8 in the bios. I chose win8 so it worked out of the box. I didn't notice too much of a difference in performance between the micron msata SSD and the seagate SSHD after 4 reboots, but the performance is adequate. I run movies 1080p, emulator games work just fine like MAME, Dreamcast, dolphin etc. I run a few steam games on this thing and with some tweaking I got sonic generations to run fine at lower res, borderlands pre-sequel looks good, castle crashers perfect, ultra street fighter 4 looks very good, older sonic games and emulators have no problem, and I use this with my 40" vizio 1080p television (it looks great btw). I also run movies through the network using zyxel power line ethernet and this has no issues. Lots of usb ports!! Lastly loow power consumption!

Cons: Odd errors with certain steam games, though this might be intel hd graphics issue...CANNOT get WOL to work!! this is making me crazy! Obviously this could be more powerful, but if you want a good amount more performance get the iBt19 as it has a quad core. Lastly upgrading the bios isn't as easy as it should be.

Other Thoughts: I didn't expect too much but I went ahead and purchased this based on other reviewer remarks (they were right!) I stream many things from my Qnap (2 floors down) through power line ethernet, this handles everything with grace. I run many games on this, including some what recent steam games just to see what this can handle. for something so small and energy efficient it will get the job done for most home reasons. Very snappy with SSD/SSHD, web browsing, emulation gaming, running back ups, 1080P movies etc.

4GB Ram
64GB Micron SSD
500GB Seagate SSHD
