5 out of 5 eggs Inexpensive Ubuntu media center build 03/14/2015

This review is from: ASRock D1800M Intel Dual-Core Celeron Processor J1800 Micro ATX Motherboard/CPU/VGA Combo

Pros: Simply works great. I love the ability to fine tune the fan speeds in the UEFI settings utility.

Cons: None whatsoever.

Other Thoughts: I built this using Ubuntu 14.04.1 (flashback w/metacity UI) since it's supported until April 2019 with no HWE EOL hassle as will be encountered with 14.04.2. No driver issues whatsoever. I just used 1 4GB stick of G.SKILL F3-1333C9S-4GIS which is more than enough for the intended purpose.

Pros: Works great with my new ASRock D1800M.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Used with that mobo to build an inexpensive Ubuntu based media center.

Rosewill RCX-Z90-AL - 92mm Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

5 out of 5 eggs Excellent cooler! 02/12/2015

This review is from: Rosewill RCX-Z90-AL - 92mm Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

Pros: I'm repurposing an old DB43LD mobo w/Pentium E5300 Dual-Core 2.6GHz CPU and even with a brand new stock Intel cooler the core temps hovered at nearly 50 degrees C just streaming HD video. This cooler dropped the temps to about 37 to 40 degrees C while streaming so I'm a happy camper.

The Intel cooler fan would typically run about 1500 RPM whereas this Rosewill cooler fan runs a bit under 1000 RPM and still drops the core temps about 10 degrees C so the heat sink is apparently quite efficient.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The retention pins on this cooler are quite a bit easier to insert than are the stock Intel cooler pins - so if you're having trouble "snapping" these pins into place you're doing something wrong! Stop and make certain that all four "locks" are turned fully counterclockwise before trying to push the pins into place.
