Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD3000HLHX 300GB 10000 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: This was the fastest SATA III mechanical drive that I've ever used. In real-world, day-to-day use it compared favorably to a low-end SSD in some respects.

Cons: After about 3 months of 24x7 use, this drive developed a bad sector that the drive firmware would not automatically reallocate. Even the WD Data Lifeguard utility could not repair or reallocate it - "Error was detected while repairing bad sectors - please contact WD tech support for help". What was strange was that S.M.A.R.T. showed the reallocated sector count to be zero, so I know that I wasn't maxed out in this respect. Windows was able to mark it as bad in chkdsk, and move on, but this spooked me as a sign of bad things to come so I took the drive out of production.

Other Thoughts: I put this drive in a new build because I've had great luck with older Velociraptors - I have two 36GB Velociraptors in a RAID 0 array that have been running for about six years 24x7 in another build without a single problem, ever.

ZALMAN MS800 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: This is, without a doubt, one of the best cases that I've ever worked with. Very high quality of workmanship overall. It is more of a full tower than a mid-tower. Very sturdy, Smooth surfaces. High attention to detail. Slick and professional looking. Highly configurable with up to 10 external drive bays. Provides bending relief for large video card(s).

The drive retaining clips actually work. The side panels are heavy-duty and don't flex the slightest bit.

I can't believe it is so inexpensive.

Cons: Even though the top vent has room for two fans don't expect to be able to install just any water cooling kit that has a double-length radiator (such as the Corsair H100i) - the screw holes just don't line up in most cases. It will take case modding to make it work.

The stock case fans are on the weak side. Replace them with the case fans of your choice.

The air filter on the bottom is not much of a filter - the holes are so big in the filter that it will only stop dust bunnies or very large pieces of dust.

Other Thoughts: I wanted a case that would accept a large number of 5.25" bay items, such as hot-swap SATA racks, control panels, and other accessories. It also had to have a professional appearance.

The build will run BOINC jobs 24x7 and will also act as a network server and NAS for a large home/home office network.

Pros: Extreme quality construction throughout. The packing materials alone were worthy of royalty - the unit came in a velvet bag inside the box.

Modular cables! No unused cables to tie up and tuck away. Solid connections on both ends, heavy-duty and sturdy. Good variety and quantity of cables.

Stable power. During burn-in at idle and at Prime95 load the voltages were extremely stable.

Cons: None
