64-bit is the way to be...

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders

Pros: 64-bit OS is highly superior to anything else I've used in the 32-bit realm. It's stable, and haven't had any problems with drivers or unsupported hardware. Everything I took from the old computer transferred just fine to the new with VHPx64.

Cons: It's Vista, so it takes some adjustment after XP. Other than that, really, nothing.

Overall Review: If you're going to go Vista, and will have at least 4GB of RAM, don't do anything but go x64. You'll thank me later.

Wouldn't Get Recognized by Vista x64?

ASUS (Dual Panels) BLACK Drive+ WHITE Panel 18X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM IDE DVD-ROM Drive Model DVD-E818A3
ASUS (Dual Panels) BLACK Drive+ WHITE Panel 18X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM IDE DVD-ROM Drive Model DVD-E818A3

Pros: It's ASUS. They know their computer tech, and generally, everything works well. When I bought it, it was free shipping. Always a plus!

Cons: However, with this drive (at least the one that is currently in the RMA process) the drive was super noisy, didn't get recognized in Vista (but was, in BIOS) and wouldn't therefore, play any media. Again, it could be simply one defective drive. That happens. But I can't give it more than 2 eggs for the loudness alone of this drive (which seems to be a consistent note amongst reviewers).

Overall Review: Again, this review is on an RMA'd drive. Your mileage may vary!

It's the way to go!

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - Core 2 Quad Kentsfield Quad-Core 2.4 GHz LGA 775 105W Processor - BX80562Q6600
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - Core 2 Quad Kentsfield Quad-Core 2.4 GHz LGA 775 105W Processor - BX80562Q6600

Pros: For the price, this is the best processor for your buck. Nothing in this price range compares even remotely to the Q6600. Strangely, a local retailer (that sounds like a side order at McDonalds) doesn't carry em anymore (at least my branch) but then again, Newegg has the best price on em anyway.

Cons: I haven't tried the new Core i7 chips, so those could be better in the long term... but unless you're building a totally high-end, future-proof system, the Q6600 will probably suit all your needs.

Overall Review: My system: Q6600, 4GB RAM, Vista Home Premium x64, nVidia 9400GT All works smoothly!

Simply a great drive!

Pros: It does what it should and is relatively quiet.

Cons: None. Surely it could be quieter, but then again, I could lose some weight too, so, ya know...

Overall Review: For the price, I'll take Lite-On over any other drive manufacturer, any day. I've never had a bad experience, and the price is always right.

ICH9 is unusable!!!

ECS G33T-M2 LGA 775 Intel G33 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ECS G33T-M2 LGA 775 Intel G33 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: The motherboard works exactly as stated. Excepting SATA support in WinXP. Vista would probably work great.

Cons: Installing WinXP on a new system was entirely impossible. As the system only has SATA ports on the motherboard (no IDE), one would think that there would be some driver somewhere that windows would recognize for ICH9 (non-raid) support. No dice. Intel, Microsoft, ECS, and 3rd party has NOTHING for this issue. Don't buy if installing a new system with WinXP!!!

Overall Review: If I had any idea that ICH9 was not really supported anywhere, I wouldn't have even tried this board. And now I cannot RMA because I sent away for the rebate... :(
