SUPERMICRO SYS-5017C-MF 1U Rackmount Server Barebone LGA 1155 Intel C202 DDR3 1333/1066/800
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: Good price, good build.

Cons: One of the two mobo network ports is completely unusable in Linux. There's a known issue with that 82579LM chip and driver that causes the network card to go to sleep for 5 to 10 seconds every few minutes even if you disable power management. Not fun with VOIP traffic. DONT RUN LINUX on this box unless you want a big headache.

Other Thoughts: I wish I'd known before I ordered 3 of these, now I am having my remote office ship the server back so we can install an additional network card and disable the on-board em0.

EnGenius EAP600 N600 High-Power Dual-Band Gigabit Indoor Wireless Access Point
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: Features, price

Cons: This thing requires out of the box, which is what most people use as their router IP address and will immediately cause a conflict if you connect it to your network. Every other brand of AP I've used defaulted to a higher address. Now I have an IP address conflict with my router that bumped 100 users off the internet.

Other Thoughts: Beware, don't make any assumptions when you configure this thing. I'm still shaking my head that they would have given it as it's IP address out of the box when it's not a router.

D-Link DAP-2553 Wireless Access Point Selectable Dual Band AirPremier PoE IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4/5GHz up to 300Mbps/ Multiple SSID, 802.1Q VLAN
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: High speed, 5G, easy to configure AP. More robust than most consumer gear.

Cons: Can't run both 2.4 and 5 GHz at the same time

Other Thoughts: I'm running it with WPA2 encryption and talking to my Android phones, tablets and my Windows laptop just fine. I'm running 5G. I kept my old AP around to continue supplying 2.4G for the game systems and older devices. I don't require much range so I can't speak to that but it covers the entire downstairs of my home just fine. Never tested it from upstairs.
