Nice little board.

Intel BOXD945GCLF Intel Atom processor 230 Intel 945GC Mini ITX Motherboard / CPU Combo
Intel BOXD945GCLF Intel Atom processor 230 Intel 945GC Mini ITX Motherboard / CPU Combo

Pros: Performs decently, power efficient, low noise. Works with up to 2 GB of memory, and is 64-bit compatible. The onboard GMA 950 2D and 3D accelerator performs adequately for the basic things you would use this board for.

Cons: The video output is slightly noisy, although not very noticeable. It may be an electrical issue with my configuration, but I am not certain. Also, if using Linux or FreeBSD, you may have to resort to using Realtek's driver.

Overall Review: Keep in mind that the Atom CPU was designed for basic tasks, like web surfing, email, etc. Don't expect this platform to handle HD movies or high-powered games, though DVD playback should work. I'm using the following parts with the board: *Kingston 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM KVR667D2N5/2G, Item #: N82E16820134192. *iStarUSA S3 STORM SERIES Mini-ITX Case 80W Power Supply, Item #: N82E16811165041. *Seagate Barracuda ST380815AS 80GB, Item #: N82E16822148231. *SAMSUNG Slim 8X DVD Burner Black Model SN-S082H, Item #: N82E16827151162. If using Linux, you may want to check out Realtek's r8101 driver module available for download at http://www.realtek.com.tw For me, the r8169 module causes crashes using kernel 2.6.24, and behaves sporadically on 2.6.25, even though the bug causing the crash was fixed. r8101 from Realtek behaves correctly.

Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht Game
Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht Game

Comments: Xenosaga is a RPG with good graphics, but the player spends most of his/her time in the drab, sterile interriors of space ships. Gameplay is also completely linear. You never get to pilot any of the space ships and explore; you just wander around in them.

Good budget motherboard

GIGABYTE GA-G31M-S2L LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-G31M-S2L LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Been using this board since 2008 in a simple workstation, and it has been very stable with Linux.

Cons: *Integrated graphics output is a bit noisy. The interference is only slightly visible, however. *Lack of DVI output for integrated graphics.

Decent large monitor

SAMSUNG 24" a-si TFT/TN WUXGA LCD Monitor 5 ms 1920 x 1200 D-Sub, DVI 2433BW

Pros: I'm using it on Mac Mini with DVI and a Linux workstation with analog. Quality is good with both, in the panel's 1900x1200 resolution. Attractive price.

Cons: It took about 5-10 min for me to put it together. The stand wasn't such a pain. Just follow the directions. What was a pain was finding an acceptible resolution to set it up with. It wouldn't take the 1280x960x120hz i was using for the CRT, and it wouldn't take 800x600. After setting it in the 1900x1200 it worked fine.

Overall Review: Moved from an aging 22" CRT monitor.

COOLER MASTER Vortex 752 RR-CCH-P912-GP 92mm Sleeve CPU Cooler
COOLER MASTER Vortex 752 RR-CCH-P912-GP 92mm Sleeve CPU Cooler

Pros: Large fan, very quiet. Decent cooling at this price range. With LGA775, it screws on the mobo. No need to worry about prying clips.

Cons: With LGA775, need to remove mobo from case to fasten the nuts on the back of the mobo.

Electrical Issues

Intel BOXD945GCLF Intel Atom processor 230 Intel 945GC Mini ITX Motherboard / CPU Combo

Pros: To add to what I mentioned in my review on 06/18/2008 about video noise/interference: The board seems sensitive to power supply quality. I swapped out the 80 watt PSU from the iStar case, and ran it with a 425 watt PC Power & Cooling PSU. All traces of the video distortion disappeared with the PC P&C unit.

Cons: Nothing else so far
